ADMONT ABBEY LIBRARY
Admont, Austria – 2021

The Admont Abbey Library near Vienna is a masterpiece of the late Baroque period in Europe, where different genres of art (architecture, frescoes, sculptures, writings & printed works) have merged into a unified creative tabernacle.

Constructed by Austrian architect Josef Hueber, this expansive space is the world's largest monastic library hall. In a tribute to the Enlightenment, colourful frescoes by Bartolomeo Altomonte decorate the domed ceiling with themes of knowledge and learning.

The library comprises around 200,000 volumes, whose most precious treasures include more than 1,400 manuscripts (from the 8th century) and 530 incunabula (early prints up to the year 1500).

These tomes provide a tangible link to the past, creating an atmosphere of reverence and calm in this significant building. Christian Voigt is the first artist to be allowed to photograph the Admont Abbey Library following its extensive renovation and the complete return of the historic book collection.
