Born in 1982, Tyler Shields is a Los Angeles-based photographer, writer and director celebrated for his daring, provocative and glamorous work. A former world champion in-line skater, Shields credits his athletic career with shaping his fearless, risk-taking approach to art. Known for exploring themes of consumerism, power, glamour and destruction, Shields often incorporates surreal elements such as fire, extreme stunts and live animals into his photographs. His use of a large-format 8x10 camera and techniques such as silver gelatin and dye transfer printing results in striking, high-resolution images with vibrant, saturated colours. Shields’ bold, cinematic style challenges convention and reinvents modern portraiture. As the first living photographer to have a solo exhibition at Sotheby’s London, he has cemented his place as a provocative voice in contemporary art and continues to push the boundaries of fine art photography with his innovative and fearless vision.
