Tom Hegen, born in 1991 in Germany, is a Munich-based photographer and communication designer whose aerial imagery has earned international recognition. His work investigates the impact of human activity on the natural world, using the elevated perspective of drones, planes, or helicopters to transform landscapes into powerful visual statements. Hegen’s background in design is evident in his meticulous compositions, often structured around grids, symmetry, and repetition. Yet beneath the surface aesthetics lies a deeper concern: how industrialisation, agriculture, tourism, and infrastructure alter the earth’s surface. He first gained major attention in 2018 with his project HABITAT, which earned the Adobe Social Impact Award and the Red Dot Junior Prize. In 2019, he received the German Design Award, and in 2021, his photobook AIRPORTS won the Red Dot Award: Best of the Best. That same year, he was shortlisted for the Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award for his series on coal mining in Germany. Hegen approaches each series with deep research and conceptual clarity. From salt flats and marble quarries to river deltas and tree plantations, his subjects are chosen for their visual potential and environmental relevance. He avoids manipulation in post-production, adhering to a strict documentary ethos while still presenting his images with a designer’s eye. Whether capturing the ordered chaos of floating markets or the structured repetition of oyster farms, Tom Hegen invites viewers to reflect on how we occupy, organise, and alter the spaces we inhabit. His work sits at the intersection of art, environmentalism, and visual journalism.
