Peter Mathis

Since 2009 Peter Mathis (b. 1961) has specialized in large-sized mountain and landscape photographs of the Alps, achieving the Hasselbad Master award for his work in 2007, as well as the Master of European Photography award in 2008. His landscape and mountain photography catapults us into another world. As an experienced mountaineer, Mathis often waits several days for the perfect moment for several days when light, weather, and scenery accurately reflect the motif he has created in his head. The landscape familiarly appears before us, yet his pictures always present something unknown. In doing so, he does not merely represent the mountains, lakes, and nature but illustrates their dignity and beauty. “For almost forty years, I have been going to the mountains, but now as a photographer, I see things differently. I consciously attempt to take a step back. Only with distance can one really appreciate the mountains‘ true dimension.”
