Bill Claps is a visual artist and filmmaker based in New York City. A Harvard graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in painting and art history, he also studied painting and drawing in New York and Florence, Italy. Working in a variety of mediums, including photography, printmaking, and painting, he draws references from a wide range of sources to explore a common visual language shared by all cultures. Art history, landscapes, calligraphy, the human body, expressionism, and images appropriated from modern and contemporary art influence his work. For the past eight years, Claps has been working on a series entitled “Natural Abstractions”, a homage to traditional Chinese and Japanese landscape painting. Combining photography with mixed media processes, the resulting works are poised between the figurative and the abstract.
