We are delighted to welcome Daniel Remer to Petra Gut Contemporary. A still-life artist renowned for his lush colour palette and idiosyncratic compositions, his work stands out for its unique fusion of old and new, familiar and strange, and is sure to intrigue and inspire.
Born in London and now residing in Israel, Daniel was captivated by photography from a young age, even setting up a darkroom at home. However, he transitioned into filmmaking during his late teens. After graduating with honours from the London Film School, Remer carved out a successful career in the industry, contributing to high-profile films and television shows in the UK and the USA, including working with the iconic Jim Henson.
His passion for photography was rekindled during the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting a return to the medium that first inspired him, although this time, he fully embraced the advantages of digital technology. Drawing influence from early Metaphysical and Surrealist painters, Remer has developed a distinct visual language that delves into existential themes through carefully composed still-life images, creating a unique fusion between old and new, familiar and strange.

Each artwork is a testament to Remer's meticulous planning and dedication. He spends days, even weeks, perfecting the composition, sourcing the props himself, and adjusting their placement and lighting before clicking the shutter, allowing him to give full expression to his inner world.
He employs a photographic technique known as 'light painting', which requires meticulous preparation to create the rich colours and intricate textures which populate his photographs. Every element in his compositions, from the fold of fabric to the twist of a rope, is deliberately placed to infuse his work with deep symbolism.

The deep hues of his images sit somewhere between painting and photography, drawing the viewer in with this cocktail of old and new. This creative fusion has already begun to earn him awards and recognition, most recently at the London and European Photography Awards.
