Petra Gut Contemporary is thrilled to announce the upcoming exhibition of Bill Claps' latest collection, "Natural Abstractions Switzerland". This unique series showcases mixed media artworks that draw inspiration from Switzerland's breathtaking forests and landscapes, all based on original photographs taken by Claps himself. As part of this immersive experience, the artist will engage directly with his creative process in the idyllic setting of St. Moritz, serving as an artist in residence at our gallery from 12 to 24 July. This residency allows Claps to infuse his work with the authentic essence of Swiss nature. It provides a rare opportunity for art lovers to witness the evolution of his artworks firsthand. The exhibition promises to be a compelling display of Claps' mastery and is scheduled to enchant visitors from 13 July until 14 August.
Bill Claps is an artist of remarkable depth and versatility, with a career that spans visual arts and filmmaking. Holding a Bachelor of Arts in painting and art history from Harvard University, Claps has further honed his artistic skills through dedicated study in New York and Florence. His "Natural Abstractions" series is a deeply personal project, reflecting his admiration for the traditions of Chinese painting and the groundbreaking work of 18th-century Japanese master printmakers. These historical influences are evident in Claps' innovative approach to the series, where the graphical style that once inspired European Impressionists is reimagined through his contemporary lens.
In "Natural Abstractions Switzerland", Claps seeks to bridge the gap between the past and present, offering a fresh perspective on the natural world surrounding us. By integrating traditional artistic techniques with modern media, he creates pieces that are not only visually stunning but also rich in historical and cultural significance. This exhibition at Petra Gut Contemporary in St. Moritz is an invitation to explore the beauty of Switzerland through the eyes of a profoundly skilled artist whose work captures the essence of its landscapes in an entirely new light.
