GEORGE PEABODY LIBRARY
Baltimore, America – 2022
Formerly known as the Library of the Peabody Institute of the City of Baltimore, this collection traces its origins back to the Institute's establishment in 1857. That year, George Peabody, a philanthropist from Massachusetts, dedicated the Institute to the people of Baltimore as a gesture of gratitude for their “kindness and hospitality.”
The library’s impressive building, which opened in 1878, was the creation of architect Edmund G. Lind in collaboration with Dr. Nathaniel H. Morison, the Institute’s first provost. The main reading room is particularly striking, boasting five levels of ornate cast-iron balconies that soar up to a skylight 61 feet overhead, creating a bright and open atmosphere.
Housing 300,000 volumes, primarily from the 19th century, the collection is particularly notable for its focus on subjects such as religion, British art, architecture, American history, biography, literature, Romance languages, literature, the history of science, geography, exploration, and travel. The repositor of learning is shown in all its glory by Christian Voigt; capturing the chequerboard floor, ornate columns and intricately decorated balconies in this impressive image.
