The internationally renowned artist duo Muntean/Rosenblum have been cooperating since 1992.
Muntean/Rosenblum's art is not easy to categorise: they paint pictures and transfer the motifs into performances, films and installations.
Their work is "four-handed und double-brained" – as they suggest themselves.
The paintings present a classical figurative style of painting set in white frames, reminding of comics with captions below them.
The compositions are designed from photos of their archives.
Muntean/Rosenblum present the generally juvenile figures in expressive poses with affected manners and gestures. Gestures that remind of baroque paintings, the dramatic dark and light presentation of light and shadow evoke the baroque paintings of Caravaggio.
Muntean/Rosenblum succeed in a skillful sampling of art-historical compositions passed on over time and contemporary ones. The figures wearing Adidas sneakers and tracksuit pants present themselves in the here and now.
Muntean/Rosenblum create precise ambiguity, throw up questions without imposing answers. Paintings that allow pathos and emotions to develop and that question our common viewing habits.
Their work was exhibited among others at the Tate Britain, London; the Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Leipzig; CAC Malaga; Kunsthaus Bregenz and MUSAC, Léon.
