Tim and Craig are colossal mammals and dominated a formidable front line of big bulls that morning in Amboseli. To be so close to two of the biggest elephants in the world and photographing from the ground up was as intense a 30 seconds in the field as I can remember. I was fortunate with the soft light and the background - both of which were out of my control. We were packed up and celebrating back at camp by 8.30 am.

This is probably my lead shot of 2019 and I am deeply grateful to my guide - Juma Wanyama - without which it would not have been possible. Not only does he facilitate my partnership with the street smart Masai spotters whom I asked to search for Tim and Craig at first light, he has also helped develop my working relationship with the Kenyan Wildlife Service (Kws) who oversee and support my work in Amboseli. It is not on paper, but I believe that the considerable sums we give back to conservation in Africa (over $1m a year) helps our cause with the Kws.

However, Juma’s key skill is his understanding of the mood of both Tim and Craig and their willingness to tolerate my presence in their space. He worked wonders to allow this epic encounter to materialise. I have total trust in Juma and I think he also knows, after eight years of working together, that I am responsible when out of the jeep. One cavalier move could be fatal.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0274/0553/files/yarrow_david_099_the_mob_132x205_7098c891-ed2c-4be4-b364-bf7da0d7c0de.jpg?v=1783290624
david-yarrow-mars-attacks
Mars Attacks!
Mars Attacks!
Sea of Cortez – 2021

Every year in the early summer, thousands of mobula rays congregate in the Sea of Cortez off the coast of La Paz in Mexico. On calm days at sea, a spectacular courting ritual unfolds during which the rays show off by jumping several metres out of the sea. It is one of the most surreal sights to witness anywhere in the world. In the ocean, mobula rays look as one would expect, but when flying through the air, they look like aliens or spaceships. They are quite literally a fish out of water. I have no preconception as to what a “Mars Attack” might look like, but this is hopefully the closest I will get to it.

There are a few dilemmas on this location for the filmmaker. Firstly, the action often takes place 90 minutes from port and the light and the activity are at their best in the hour before sunset. We also discovered that the wind picks up after the sun sets. Secondly, I wanted to be as low as possible and this ruled out hiring larger more comfortable boats.

There was no way we would sacrifice content, so we had no choice but to spend a few dark evenings returning home in quite rough seas in a small fishing boat. But that was still the right trade. There are no shortcuts in this gig.

I took a great deal of frames over the week, but it is such a low percentage assignment that just three or four did justice to the spectacle. It requires quick reactions and - as always - good fortune. Much depends on the alertness and manoeuvering skills of the captain of the boat. I was fortunate to work in La Paz with my fellow Londoner - Luke Inman - who now lives in the city and knows the sea and sealife there as well as anyone. He hired the boat captain - Tony Ruelas - and this picture is as much his as it is mine.

What a planet we live on.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0274/0553/files/yarrow_david_219_mars_attacks_132x175_87b1d4f8-3725-4051-8c31-723a617bb078.jpg?v=1783291518
david-yarrow-marshlands
Marshlands
Marshlands
Dinokeng, South Africa – 2023

I think that this is one of my more powerful lion photographs over the last ten years. We have taken our fair share of bad ass pictures of girls in cars in America, but I always wanted to extend my reach to Africa and introduce a Mad Max type narrative. Rather than working in the mountains with snow, as we often do, it was time to work in the desert with sand.

I knew my girl for the shot - Cara Delevingne - and I knew that the hugely respected Naankuse Sanctuary in Namibia often work their cheetahs with film crews, and then I also knew the Kanaan desert well. But I needed a central prop to hold the whole idea together. I needed something of substance.

I had long deliberated over building a bar marooned in the middle of the desert. Not just a two-dimensional facade of a bar, but an actual functioning bar, with lights, cooling machines and entertainment.

I confess that there was quite a bit of talking to myself about the risk reward ratio and I became all to mindful of Walt Disney’s famous advice of “stop talking and start doing”. I like to have creative courage and be bold.

So, I threw my fears away and we built our bar in the desert. It is so damn good that we are going to keep it there for tourists to visit and perhaps have a cold Namibian lager. It was not a small building job and six lorries full of wood and corrugated iron made the eight-hour trip south from Windhoek. I have never worked with a more willing bunch of people in my life than the Namibian production team and they had earned the right to be very proud of The Desert Inn.

In a tableau photograph like this, I want to be greedy and broaden the story: the barman and the bushman on the far right are the little details that help. I wanted to visually glorify the amphitheatre as much as the racing itself and this required fresh snow. After a thaw, any winter town can look unexceptional, whereas after a snowfall it can look like a Disney movie or a winter wonderland from the pages of a story book.

St Moritz is a sunny place and the sun facing slopes of the town and the surrounding trees can get a little messy and green after just one day of sun. From the far side of the lake, all the iconic grand hotels such as Badrutt’s Palace and the Kulm Hotel stand out, in all their glory along with the church spire and the famous old mountain railway. There can surely be no more glamorous a backdrop for a horse racetrack in the world, so long as there is fresh snow.

But my needs were even more demanding than fresh snow. There had to be not just recent snow, but no falling snow, and then, if possible, I did not want the sun to be out, as, by the time the races started at 11.30am, the winter sunshine would make everything too stark. I struggle to tell a story in harsh light, as the aggressive tonal range can detract from what the artist wants to say. But I also wanted depth, so that there were layers in the photograph from the horses up front to the cable car high in the mountains in the background. To do this needed light, but just flat winter light.

I woke that Sunday morning in town in February 2024 and saw my chance. It was still snowing, but the forecast was for it to stop by 11 am. The odds were always so low - one could wait many years to get these conditions on one of the three Sundays in February. But on 11 February 2024, it was all there for me and I took my chance. It’s fair to say that I have been thinking about my camera settings for many years on this shot.

The photograph would not have been possible without the collaboration of Dennis Schiergen, who has been at the helm of the White Turf - either as a jockey or now as its lead official - for many years. It was my view of St Moritz that was exceptional.

Anyone that knows St Moritz well can look at this image for a long time and tell their own stories of misadventures somewhere in the frame. For a while after, you fumble for words, trying vainly to assemble a private narrative, an explanation, a comfortable way to frame where you've been and what’s happened. In the end, you're just happy you were there - with your eyes open - and lived to see it.”

In 1840, the Hotel Bellevue des Alpes opened its doors for business in the fabled Kleine Scheidegg pass in Switzerland. Sitting proudly at nearly 7,000 feet, with the notorious Eiger mountain towering above it, this grand old hotel has, for 185 years, offered unparalleled bedroom visuals. Its decor and design have an Agatha Christie vibe and its location a James Bond one. Anyone with a visual sensibility recognises immediately that there is nothing remotely normal about this place. Its existence is testimony to Swiss ambition and engineering prowess eight or nine generations ago.

I had pondered and iterated for some months as to how to do justice to the location. There were a few easy decisions such as filming in the winter and to position my camera far enough back from the right-hand wing of the hotel to give the structure room to breathe and, in so doing, convey a necessary sense of isolation and scale. I knew that the end frame demanded perfect compositional balance.

But delivering a legitimate foreground narrative was more challenging. The north Face of the Eiger has claimed 64 lives since 1937 and is something of a “Holy Grail” for mountaineers who get a rush from the implicit risk and danger. The setting draws in risk takers and thrill seekers and that was ultimately the angle I focused on.

I sensed that an old European roulette table would not only play on risk taking well, but it would also double down on the James Bond vibe that the setting evokes. I wanted to reinforce the message that is not only a hotel where guests have literally and metaphorically lived on the edge, but also a destination that attracts those who live fast paced and glamorous lives.

The missing link in this layered story were the protagonists and I knew that they would be critical to the whole piece. If they fell short, the picture would fail. It was that simple. David Gandy is a bankable asset in any picture, that is why he has been the face of Dolce and Gabbana for so many years and, for a still camera, there is a very creditable 007 look. Meanwhile, our old Austrian friend Nadine Leopold - with her femininity, grace and intelligence - adds to any story.

My sense was always that this vignette needed to be taken as close to twilight as possible; the sense of impending darkness would add drama and certainly complement the styling.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0274/0553/files/yarrow_david_525_the_eiger_168x132_4cc42835-07bd-45d6-9d4f-45033cdca408.jpg?v=1783297827
