It was the start of an era in which tennis landed an integral role within popular culture and the stars themselves often became sex symbols. Tennis was sexy.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhen filming our Palm Beach series, I had been given access to a beautiful home on North Country Drive just north of The Breakers. The property faced the Atlantic and the vast verdant lawns stretching to the beach were of Wimbledon standard. Towering palm trees soared to the sky breaking the symmetry and offered a definite sense of place. This was very clearly the ocean front of Palm Beach; a stretch of land emphatically known for the good things in life. It was a property that offered a complete visual overload.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI saw an opportunity to borrow from that famous old tennis picture and then impose a Palm Beach narrative. The 1970s styling was quite straightforward, but the concept required some wind to lift the tennis player’s skirt in the manner I was hoping for. As much as any other hotel in the world, the entrance of The Colony is a microcosm of the community. The coral colour of the colonial style building and the green of the palm trees fuse in that subtle alchemy that is Palm Beach and meanwhile, those who arrive at the hotel are doing so to have fun not work. The Colony is the flag bearer of “Team Palm Beach”.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI stayed at The Colony for a couple of nights before our shoot began and walked the nearby roads deliberating over what to do. The 1947 building is so tall and the entrance roads are so close to the building that it would be difficult to find a spot to celebrate the institution and tell a foreground story.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut I realised there was one place on the bend of the road going southeast from Worth Avenue where I could get a car in the frame. The problem was that to get some space for my composition, the car would be going away from me. I mused over this riddle for a day and then, over an evening cocktail at the Colony, I found my solution.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe idea was solid, but we then had to execute it before the traffic became too steady. This may not be a place of work ethic, but it is a place of desire.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 1873 a shipwreck brought coconuts to the area leading to the planting of palm and the renaming of the area from Lake Worth Country to Palm Beach. But unfortunately these days there are not so many palm trees on the beaches - the town’s name cannot be taken too literally. But a couple of miles north of the island there are a couple of ideally positioned palms on Riviera Beach that have long grabbed my attention.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe premise of photographing girls on a beach is something that slightly unsettles me. I am not a glamour photographer or indeed a fashion photographer, and it’s hardly a novel place to focus one's lens. If the key to art is authenticity, the alarm bells start to ring when I walk onto a beach at sunrise with two models.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut on this one occasion, in Palm Beach - the most idyllic and rarified of places to live - I felt that under these two lonely palm trees I could play to the vibe of Palm Beach and celebrate the beautiful world. We just needed to bring the right car onto the beach and work around that prop at sunrise.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI needed compositional tightness and the right use of space; this was not a brand commercial and there was a necessity to make sure that we did all we could creatively. Undoubtedly, the proximity of one of the world’s most rarified and idyllic communities has given Wellington an edge on the glamour and prestige front. The palm trees that encircle many of the venues also add an extra visual spark to the whole affair. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe were lucky enough to be introduced to Emily Smith whose family are at the heart of Wellington's showjumping community both socially and professionally. Emily not only fully embraced our plans to include these festivities in our Palm Beach series but also lent us her facilities and her son Spencer who is a successful and well-known show jumper. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn the Uk, I grew up reading Jilly Cooper’s raunchy novels about love, lust and rivalry in the horse world. She told stories that suggested the competition was just as fierce in the bedroom as it was in the horse ring. It was a licentious world where the leading show jumpers had many female admirers and sometimes found temptation too much.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis vignette of Wellington plays to her narrative. The backdrop of the Renaissance revival styled facade of the grand old place immediately locates the course and this is helpful to a storyteller. The Breakers and Palm Beach are tied at the hip. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe are grateful to the owners of the hotel for giving us permission to stage a shoot on the approach to the 18th green and even more grateful that they allowed us to tell a story that played homage to the hotel's wider facilities. We did not want to be too purist in our creative vision, after all, The Breakers is a place of fun and levity, rather than a place on the Pga’s map of tournament golf.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe clientele of The Breakers enjoy sunbathing and golf, but by and large, these activities are ring fenced and one activity rather eliminates the other. The sand on the golf course and the sand on the beach are different.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy idea was simply to tell a tale of the day that the lines got muddied and that one bunker hosted an errant guest. Only in time would she discover that this patch of sand had other uses. Sitting proudly at nearly 7,000 feet, with the notorious Eiger mountain towering above it, this grand old hotel has, for 185 years, offered unparalleled bedroom visuals. Its decor and design have an Agatha Christie vibe and its location a James Bond one. Anyone with a visual sensibility recognises immediately that there is nothing remotely normal about this place. Its existence is testimony to Swiss ambition and engineering prowess eight or nine generations ago.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI had pondered and iterated for some months as to how to do justice to the location. There were a few easy decisions such as filming in the winter and to position my camera far enough back from the right-hand wing of the hotel to give the structure room to breathe and, in so doing, convey a necessary sense of isolation and scale. I knew that the end frame demanded perfect compositional balance.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut delivering a legitimate foreground narrative was more challenging. The north Face of the Eiger has claimed 64 lives since 1937 and is something of a “Holy Grail” for mountaineers who get a rush from the implicit risk and danger. The setting draws in risk takers and thrill seekers and that was ultimately the angle I focused on. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI sensed that an old European roulette table would not only play on risk taking well, but it would also double down on the James Bond vibe that the setting evokes. I wanted to reinforce the message that is not only a hotel where guests have literally and metaphorically lived on the edge, but also a destination that attracts those who live fast paced and glamorous lives.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe missing link in this layered story were the protagonists and I knew that they would be critical to the whole piece. If they fell short, the picture would fail. It was that simple. David Gandy is a bankable asset in any picture, that is why he has been the face of Dolce and Gabbana for so many years and, for a still camera, there is a very creditable 007 look. It was unusual in that gaining membership did not afford access to golf, tennis, pickleball or even a swimming pool with lunchtime dining. The reason is that Carriage House only opens when it is dark outside. The sport is in the cocktail bar.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI was invited by some kind members before Christmas and it struck me as a very promising concept. Drinking is encouraged and, on balance, the men seemed to be slightly older than the women.  Perhaps by a generation. There is unity in the sartorial elegance but a whiff of mischief to the whole place. The dress code is stricter than the behaviour code.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere are a few old dogs knocking around for joint and they come with some history for sure, but that seems to matter little.
