But having fulfilled this desire, I have been disappointed in the reality because invariably the lure of tourism has necessitated some immediately obvious modernity in the architecture. There are, however, a few villages from the gold rush in America that remain as they were left and after exhaustive field work, I found the best final frontier ghost settlement imaginable. I cannot reveal the destination for obvious reasons, but I persuaded the local government to open up the fenced off historic site for me.

It was a treasure trove of artifacts from 100 years ago – and best of all, there was a railway station and an abandoned carriage. Inside the carriage there was a surreal canvas on which to tell a story – snow on the rotten seats, broken windows and a central corridor strewn with the remnants of decades of decay.

On my first reconnaissance to the site, I saw the possibility of telling a story, but in a dreamy creative moment I thought I might need a wolf and some brave girls. It took some time to get all the logistics in place and I then needed the support of some talented and adventurous locals. We needed to shoot early for the light to be right and for the temperature to drop well below freezing – the wolf’s breath makes such a difference to the story within the picture and would not have been possible after the light and temperature had risen.

I am proud of this shot largely as it is difficult to know how it could be bettered. It is a reward for homework and logistical precision, but it is also testament to the animal handling skills of two people that were in the carriage that the lens could not see. There tend to be just 3 or 4 iconic images that transcend the overall body of work, that will always be remembered. It is these 3 or 4 shots that define a career.

I am not sure where my career will take me and I am not sure whether I have taken an iconic image yet - I will let others decide. But I do know that this photograph, which has been unveiled today as part of the Tag Heuer Don't Crack under Pressure campaign is probably the most powerful shot that I have ever taken. Yes, it was a commercial shoot with one of the world’s most famous women, but I think it goes beyond that and the image will be coveted by collectors. It grabs the eye and then holds it in a vice-like grip. Everything about the work is viscerally powerful.

I look back on that day with great emotion and there are so many people to thank. None more so than the British icon that is Cara Delevingne She is - of course - stunning, but she is also authentic and intelligent and couples this with admirable work ethic. Furthermore, on this day, she was incredibly brave and fittingly did not “crack under pressure”. This image is not manipulated - there were 5 yards between her and the lion. At no stage did she show tension or anxiety and that made my job so much easier.

I think a key to the image was the reasonably powerful directional late afternoon sunlight, as the shadows on both Cara and the lion are so consistent that the authenticity of the image cannot be questioned. In the morning, the light was flatter and therefore the lion and Cara were not as visually linked as they are here.

This campaign would not have been possible without the help of Kevin Richardson in South Africa and I thank him for the awareness he brings to the plight of the lion in Africa. The white
of the flowering meadows and the
white of the summit of Kilimanjaro combine to give the image an ethereal glow. The extreme weather conditions— it had rained torrentially for four or
five days—resulted in an implausible theater of dreams.

There was more snow on Kilimanjaro than I have ever seen before, and the normal arid dust bowl of Amboseli was
a garden bursting into acres of white carpet. It was quite a remarkable sight that was all down to the freak weather.

The biblical rainfall had discouraged other visitors, so I had the amphitheater to myself. The bigger problem was that there were very few elephants in the park—the rain had pushed them out and into the forests below Kilimanjaro. Then I just needed the elephants—no elephants, no party. About 5:00 p.m., everything came together as a small group of elephants headed to the foothills for the night and walked right through the white meadows. Many camera enthusiasts thought that given the dangerous subject matter, it must have been a 400m telephoto lens or more, but this sort of distance compression would have taken the power away from the portrait. This photograph was actually taken with a 105m lens and the benefits are immediately clear. We were that close.

If a fashion photographer is working with a top model, it is most unlikely that he or she will even carry a telephoto lens to the assignment as the best distance to work from is anything from close to very close. Ideally it should be no different with a predator – but clearly there are issues with proximity, which is why I often use remote controls.

In this conservation area, there is no chance of using a remote as it is absolutely forbidden to step foot on the ground for patently obvious reasons. The only possibility therefore is to shoot from my caged vehicle with our camera window about 4 feet off the ground. This means that good shooting locations would be very limited, as I never really want to be above the eye of an animal – that angle of view immediately kills a sense of a real encounter. The lower the camera, the more immersive the image.

In our reconnaissance there was just one small hill that the vehicle could get close to in the deep snow – the topography in this part of north east China can be extremely flat and we just had to hope that the tiger would work his way to our vantage point. Vehicles cannot get stuck here, as that then poses a logistical problem, so it was all quite a riddle. It was complicated further by the fact that the light also becomes too stark by about 10 am in the winter – we were asking for a great deal to come right. The clock ticks on a cold, clear Siberian morning in January.

It did, however, happen and the bonus was that the tiger was enormous – maybe 750 pounds and I was working from just 5 feet away. From a budget of $8 million, the box office receipts topped $125 million, and rightly so.

The main challenge in making the documentary was the weather, with temperatures between -58 and -76 degrees Fahrenheit (-50 and -60 degrees Celsius). At dawn, the film crew would spend half an hour putting on
six layers of clothes, and on some days they could not spend more than three hours outside. Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” is one of the world’s most recognised paintings and the composition has been recreated for art many times – there is no originality in the concept of a New interpretation. In order not to give a hackneyed offering there had to be creative courage and a fresh set of characters.

Montana was my best chance to be creative. I know the ghost village of Nevada City well and I kNew exactly where I would shoot. The consensual view is that it represents femininity and that Mary’s privileged position on Christ’s right hand side was critical to the symbolism that pervades the work.

My focus was to get that V shape as close to Da Vinci’s as possible – not the easiest of briefs given that Jesus was now a bear. There were other factors to be considered.
For a start, it was -10 degrees that afternoon and then some of the characters on the set were not the best of friends – a rather feudal rivalry exists between some villages high in the hills of Montana.

As much as possible, every character had to take the same pose as in the original and this required quite a bit of pre-shoot tutoring. The encounter in this bitterly cold sandbank near Prudhoe Bay seems almost surreal. It is a photograph I had always aspired to take. The best pictures can never be retaken.
There were two or three key elements to its capture. First, because the physical enormity of an adult bear is best conveyed head-on and from low on the ground, my team and I had to try and find a position where the terrain offered a horizon and an incline between me and the bear. The second and more important dynamic was to use the 25-mile-per- hour wind to our favor. Bears can smell us from a long way away if they are downwind. The overriding factor, of course, was my team’s safety. At all times we had to have an escape route. We kNew what to do here, and we had the best Inuit guide in the area. We felt safe with him, but please do not try this at home.

This bear is enormous, and my positioning shows that off. No mode of transport is more emblematic of the great push West and the attendant dangers. If it was the same bison, in the same field at midday in the summer, there would be nothing special at all. I am reminded that we always have to fight to get what we want. The research led us to the famous Durango to Silverton steam train in Colorado, partly because the track runs through the most dramatic of landscapes, but also because the narrow gauge track service remains largely the same as it was when the railroad opened in 1882. It is one of the most surreal sights to witness anywhere in the world. In the ocean, mobula rays look as one would expect, but when flying through the air, they look like aliens or spaceships. Firstly, the action often takes place 90 minutes from port and the light and the activity are at their best in the hour before sunset. We also discovered that the wind picks up after the sun sets. The game of naming one’s favourite beach bar is played worldwide and will always be a deeply personal choice, as with “Death Row meal” or “fishing cabin guests”. In the Uk, there are fewer pirates and it’s a world removed from the Caribbean, but my personal favourite bars by the sea are the Applecross Inn in Strathcarron, Scotland and the Sloop Inn near my home in Thurlestone, Devon. Both have a rustic charm and attract clientele smelling of the sea, but Captain Morgan types are rare.

Much further afield, it is worth the trip alone, to visit the renowned beach bar and restaurant Parador La Huella in Jose Ignacio, Uruguay, to see beach entertainment done properly. It is effortlessly magical and has rightly earned its place in beach bar history. I was in Buenos Aires with a friend not too long ago and I said we had to go there for lunch. It has a very British stamp to it and there is a sense of being at an old boys reunion at Harrow, but it welcomes all nations and all characters. For what could be a rather stuffy golf club culture, it is defined by its lack of stuffiness. It is a Club where people have fun and refuse to grow up and surely that should always be applauded.

My dilemma was how to take a picture that was authentic, fun and told a story of its members. The Cresta Run is 3/4s of a mile of downhill sheet ice; start falling down the tunnel and you have a long way to go until you stop.

The Club was entertained by my planned position and graciously roped me in. They are all world class resorts and we see ourselves as extremely blessed to be able to compare one to the other.

However, we are emphatically clear about one thing, and that is what we consider to be the best bar throughout the great American ski resorts. Before we give you our answer, it is perhaps worth considering what, in our eyes, constitutes a great bar.

To qualify as a contender, we believe that a bar should, for starters, be busy throughout the week. Mondays at 4pm are a better time to judge than Saturdays at 8pm. There should be a depth and substance to its structure and the walls and ceilings should be adorned with a unique collection of Americana nonsense that lends it character. There must be an authenticity that immediately notifies the incoming patron that all is not normal here.

Most importantly, the clientele should be a compelling cocktail of beauty, danger and vice. Men with disposable moral fibre should intermingle with ladies who hold the room and catch the eye. It is perfectly acceptable for some of those ladies to also have disposable moral fibre. The bar should have a vibe that is strong enough to secure lifelong loyalty as well as bigger nights than intended. The lake is busy in February, it also hosts car races, polo and even cricket matches and Badrutt’s watches imperiously above it all.

My idea was to bring a horse and jockey into the famous bar at Badrutt’s and I sensed that the hotel management - led by the Gm, Richard Leuenberger - would be open minded to this. It is one of the peculiarities of St Moritz that despite its wealth and excessive glamour, there is not a stuffiness to the town. I wanted to visually glorify the amphitheatre as much as the racing itself and this required fresh snow. After a thaw, any winter town can look unexceptional, whereas after a snowfall it can look like a Disney movie or a winter wonderland from the pages of a story book.

St Moritz is a sunny place and the sun facing slopes of the town and the surrounding trees can get a little messy and green after just one day of sun. From the far side of the lake, all the iconic grand hotels such as Badrutt’s Palace and the Kulm Hotel stand out, in all their glory along with the church spire and the famous old mountain railway. There can surely be no more glamorous a backdrop for a horse racetrack in the world, so long as there is fresh snow.

But my needs were even more demanding than fresh snow. There had to be not just recent snow, but no falling snow, and then, if possible, I did not want the sun to be out, as, by the time the races started at 11.30am, the winter sunshine would make everything too stark. I struggle to tell a story in harsh light, as the aggressive tonal range can detract from what the artist wants to say. But I also wanted depth, so that there were layers in the photograph from the horses up front to the cable car high in the mountains in the background. To do this needed light, but just flat winter light.

I woke that Sunday morning in town in February 2024 and saw my chance. It was still snowing, but the forecast was for it to stop by 11 am. The odds were always so low - one could wait many years to get these conditions on one of the three Sundays in February. They are not that hard to find in the area near Kelly - especially in late November and December - but I needed to be in situ very early in the day.

It was never going to be easy to get a Cigar Shot as there needs to be a sense of place in any picture taken here. Not to include the Tetons in the frame would be akin to filming in Zermatt and not including the Matterhorn. They are on a par as backdrops.

To have the Tetons as a canvas requires a high cloud or no cloud and I have always tended to prefer flat light rather than shooting with a harsh sun behind me. But there is a small window after sunrise when the sun finally hits the flats, but not in a garish way. Sitting proudly at nearly 7,000 feet, with the notorious Eiger mountain towering above it, this grand old hotel has, for 185 years, offered unparalleled bedroom visuals. Its decor and design have an Agatha Christie vibe and its location a James Bond one. Anyone with a visual sensibility recognises immediately that there is nothing remotely normal about this place. Its existence is testimony to Swiss ambition and engineering prowess eight or nine generations ago.

I had pondered and iterated for some months as to how to do justice to the location. I knew that the end frame demanded perfect compositional balance.

But delivering a legitimate foreground narrative was more challenging. The north Face of the Eiger has claimed 64 lives since 1937 and is something of a “Holy Grail” for mountaineers who get a rush from the implicit risk and danger. The setting draws in risk takers and thrill seekers and that was ultimately the angle I focused on.

I sensed that an old European roulette table would not only play on risk taking well, but it would also double down on the James Bond vibe that the setting evokes. A group of male bison charging through heavy snow, directly towards a camera is certainly a rare sight and it always seemed a bridge too far from almost every perspective. The question has always been where and how could this epic scene unfold in front of a camera?

Yellowstone National Park was never going to be the answer. This sort of collective behaviour does not tend to happen in the park and if it did, there would be zero chance of being in the right place at the right time to film it. It is difficult to break new ground in Yellowstone.

In 2020 an American artist, John Banovich, an exceptional talent and good friend, suggested that I approach Ted Turner to see if I could gain access to his stunning 180 square mile ranch - Flying D - saddling Yellowstone and neighbouring Big Sky. This remarkable place is nine times the size of Manhattan and showcases Montana at its most stunning best.

John’s wonderful painting of a group of running bison adorns the wall of the main reception of the exclusive Yellowstone Club and he took his inspiration from spending time at Ted Turner’s ranch. I recognised that this was a link worth pursuing. Flatteringly, a few months after my initial approach, the Turner team agreed to collaborate in the hope that we could raise money for Ted’s conservation initiatives.

Ted Turner is one of America’s biggest landowners and also one of its most acclaimed conservationists and he reintroduced both bison and wolves into Flying D, one of his three Montana ranches. In mid-winter, his team of ranchers will herd some of the 5,000-resident bison into areas where feeding is easier and this controlled activity creates an opportunity to work a situation. Just like cowboys herding their cattle in Texas, the skill sets of the Turner ranchers in deep snow are a privilege to watch.

The difficulty is that bison in this vast ranch are more skittish of humans on foot than their Yellowstone cousins, who see thousands of tourists every day. I therefore needed either to be camouflaged or out of sight as they made haste in my direction. Luckily the Flying D team knew of a group of rocks behind which I would be obscured from the bison’s line of sight.

After many a failure, and some adjustments to the approach, one gorgeous winter morning in February, we achieved what we set out to do. It was a real team effort and I want to thank John Banovich and the whole Turner Corporation team at the Flying D.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0274/0553/files/yarrow_david_603_the_bills_colour_102x208_b9d8a66a-0417-42f1-b342-245afb4ca32a.jpg?v=1780588543
david-yarrow-road-rage
Road Rage
Road Rage
Yellowstone National Park – 2026

Yellowstone is the only place in the United States where bison have lived continuously since prehistoric times. By 1902, poachers had reduced Yellowstone’s herd to about two dozen animals but the recent estimates suggest this has grown to around 5,000-5,400. It is America's largest and oldest wild, free-roaming herd.

We only film bison in Yellowstone in the depths of winter. There are two reasons for this: one of course is that the traffic is bearable in the winter and we are very often on our own and out of the park by 10 am; the second more important factor is that the presence of snow plays to the animal’s fortitude. I would not film the Amalfi coast in the winter, as it is a summer holiday destination, and in the same way I have no interest in filming in Yellowstone in July.

I tend to focus on the male bison which can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand 6 feet tall. From the right angle, their enormous heads and curved horns elicit imagery of mythological beasts; they are part cow and part fantasy. The bison are a revered part of the tapestry of Americana.

This immersive photograph was shot on a remote camera with a wide-angle lens on the road between West Yellowstone and Madison Junction. It’s an iterative process and I often fail simply because I am not in charge of the bison’s movement. But a pattern can develop and then we must be patient.

Yellowstone is very accessible these days and there are many photographers up there every day.
