Gered Mankowitz (b. 1946, UK) is known as one of the world’s greatest rock and roll photographers. With a career spanning 55 years, he has worked with many of the musical giants of the 20th century, from Marianne Faithful to Elton John and the Rolling Stones. Having left school at 15 and taken up photography on the recommendation of actor Peter Sellers, Mankowitz apprenticed with photographer Tom Blau. Given this unorthodox beginning, it is little surprise that Mankowitz’s style is both unique and instantly recognisable. Working primarily in high-contrast black and white, his arresting, intimate music world portraits capture the person behind the glitz and glamour. Nowadays, many of his images have come to represent the very archetype of London in the Swinging Sixties, most notably his 1967 shots of Jimi Hendrix.
