As soon as I set foot inside this treasure trove on a bleak and cold Sunday morning in January, I kNew that I would have to film inside - it was effectively a microcosm of the original wild west - the centre piece being a pool table that looked as if it belonged to the gold rush era. The caved pattern in the leather rim hinted at many hours of skilled craftsmanship.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe bar had never been used as a filming location before and what better person to baptise the premises than perhaps the most coveted and acclaimed American model of my generation - Cindy Crawford? \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nCindy is a total professional and holds a room, but I wanted her to take a journey away from her comfort zone and play the role of “the bad ass Hustler”. When someone is asked to play a role, as opposed to model, the intelligence of the individual becomes a key variable and I know Cindy Crawford is very smart - so she killed the look.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nCompositionally, I kNew that Cindy must be the focal point of the whole vignette and that meant placing here directly behind the pool table and then arranging the contextual characters as best as the tiny space could afford.  Every inch of the image had to sweat even before we brought in the wolf.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nIt was an ambitious idea for sure - a wolf and Cindy Crawford playing pool in a dimly lit mountain bar in the middle of nowhere in Montana. I wanted to convey the idea that anyone from out of town entering this bar, would leave with fewer dollars in their pocket than when they arrived. I took her to a place I know well - the ghost town of Nevada City, Montana as I hoped familiarity with the light and the angles would help me. I needed as many variables under my control as possible on an ambitious story line. The one thing we could not manage or predict was the weather and last week it was cold.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e If Cindy was outside her comfort zone with the temperatures so low and a big wolf as a companion, she did not flinch. She is professional, stoic and game and it was an honour to work with a true American idol. She sets a high bar on so many levels.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It was a big effort for her to fly from La to hang out with me and my team whom she had never met before and then work in freezing temperatures with some big wolves. She never complained and took no fee at all. Quite amazing.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e 50% of net proceeds from the sales of this image - Cindy’s Shotgun Wedding - will go towards her notable charity work - focused on raising money for children with cancer. We called last year’s photograph of the mountain men at the bar “The Usual Suspects” as that is exactly what they were. Some of those men rarely leave the warmth of The Pioneer Bar in Virginia City throughout winter - in fact they hibernate there. It proved such a popular image and has sold out across the world - in some cases raising huge sums for charity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e So, when we went back this year, we thought it would be fun to have an additional crew member - Cindy Crawford.  The word juxtaposition is over used in narrative, but I think we can get away with it here. The old boys may drink a bit and smoke a bit of weed, but they were on their very best behaviour that day - which is essentially still medieval. An international icon joining their party was not something they bargained for and at least one cowboy convinced himself it was the weed. We had to call the image “The Unusual Suspects” as a nod to her presence.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The composition, which I could control, had to be spot on, but there is no way that I could control the wolf. It is a low percentage game this and we only came away with one shot - but we got it. Cindy looks fantastically glamorous and a little “bad ass” in her role, but, as always, it is the mountain men that take away the Oscars. At the most extreme level this can evoke a sense of trespassing. This was very much the narrative behind this photograph. To be greeted by an overtly territorial crew with menace and attitude.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e But for the story to work, two things had to coalesce as one - the characters and the interior. I like playing with the cold, it adds a visceral layer to the story and in this case, it hints at an outpost on the final frontier. Surely the further off the beaten track we travel, the greater the chance of being the outsider.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This is a frame that exhausts every inch available in the camera and that was my intent. There were so many characters I wanted to include, but I was also reluctant to lose the mood of the frozen saloon. The icicles on the frosty bison with the snow laden television playing True Grit were key assets that needed to be seen to amplify the sense of cold.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Our key asset was, of course, Cindy Crawford and she had to have sovereignty of the joint. She can play a badass very well and that was her ascribed role. It is not easy for everything to come together in such a tight setting as one tension spot can ruin the whole pastiche. It’s akin to camels and the eye of the needle. The wolf ’s paw on this occasion came very close to Cindy’s shot glass, but we got away with it.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The wolf is actually a domestic dog breed called tamaskan - he is not 100% wolf, but that mattered little, as he merely added to the sense of trespass. The only reason to linger in this bar would appear to be the landlady. Maybe she could be won over? It was cinema ahead of its time and I admit to watching that sequence more times than would be considered normal.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e During Covid, we played on this storyline near my home in Devon, but in 2023 I drew up a more ambitious story that would be played out in the isolated desert community of Amboy, California.  We had scouted the area intensely and knew our angles, our light and most of all the landowners.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The premise was to style the set as if we were indeed in the late 1950s and we recognised that we had a strong backdrop, as Roy’s Cafe is one of the treasure trove authentic landmarks of Route 66.  From Roy’s looking east, the Mother Road stretches straight to the horizon in a way that plays to our preconceptions of Americana road trips. We then brought in a 1953 Ferrari 250 Mm Vignale Spyder as the lead car and dressed the background with a Ford pick-up from the late 1940s.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e But this was mere window dressing and my sense was that in order to transcend, this story required some heavyweight components. Flatteringly, Cindy Crawford agreed to be the main protagonist and I knew she would give Cary Grant a run for his money.  Cindy is the best of the best and it is always a huge honour to work with her. Ascribe her a role and a look and she will nail it every time.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e But we also needed a plane. Amboy has a tiny runway strip and towards the end of the day, when the traffic is lighter, a good pilot can flirt with the tarmac of Route 66. I needed a pilot whom I could trust and I found him in Greg Caldwell, who slightly reminded me of the heroic crop spraying pilot from the movie Independence Day. We had worked with him before and there didn’t seem much to trouble Greg - not even his plane’s aerial proximity to a $10m Ferrari or, more importantly, one of the world’s most identifiable and revered women.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e There is a film noir feel to the image and I think the relatively flat light helps the rather menacing mood. But the credit lies with both Greg and Cindy who did exactly what I asked them to do.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I guess we may have broken some new ground here as well as a few rules. We have a free run here in the winter, when only 60 people live here and the Mayor only recently gave me the symbolic key to the city.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe group shots that I have photographed around the window end of the long bar have been well received and are difficult to top, especially as the last one included Cindy Crawford.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy premise this time was to markedly up the number of people in the picture (the most we had used before was six). This puts pressure on both the construction and the casting, as one lame character can become a tension point and ruin the whole image. We have all experienced the difficulty of group pictures on Christmas Day or Thanksgiving.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI think Ellen DeGeneres’ Oscar selfie works so well, not just because of the number of people in the image, but because every character is an additive. It is my favourite selfie.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe assembled a strong cast - the models Kate Bock from Cleveland and Olivia Culpo from Charlotte, native American families from Northern Montana and then, of course, my favourite local mountain men. The hair and makeup\/styling team, led by Nikki Parisi out of La, was outstanding. My direction was 150 years ago Wild West - appropriate as in the 1860s, over 15,000 lived in Virginia City and The Pioneer Bar would have been very busy.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAll 11 characters played their roles well that day, but perhaps the picture is stolen by a lovely 85-year- old lady called Mary from Butte, Montana. His client roster reads like the ultimate A list in Hollywood. Looking at his Cv it would be quicker to mention who he hasn’t worked with.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I had never had the fortune to work with Peter before but my brief time with him in Eastern Montana gave an insight into his genius. I gave him a rather clumsy articulation of the narrative I was looking for in this outdoor shot in freezing temperatures near Ingomar, a tiny hamlet with a population of just 15. We were about as far removed from controlled studio conditions in Hollywood as you could conceive. I think I simply said that Cindy would be carrying a shotgun and with it a look of intent. Twenty minutes later Cindy bounced out of the car with an extravagant Raquel Welch 1960s big hair look that was spot on for what I had in mind.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e After that my job was easy - to shoot as quickly as possible so that our lead would not get too cold. The trick is simply to have no doubt in one’s mind of the composition and believe firmly in the narrative embodied in the preconception. It’s a bit like a golf shot (not that I would know), you make up your mind and go for it. My storyline was that Cindy and her troop were the deliverers of frontier justice - whatever way that may come. So much so, that there have been many retakes and parodies. As we all know, it featured a 26-year-old Crawford pulling up to the Halfway Café in a red sports car wearing a white tank top and jean shorts. Two young boys stare as the supermodel buys a Pepsi from a vending machine and drinks it down.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e For some time I had yearned to do my own interpretation of the advert with a still photograph and I secured Cindy’s involvement, who in turn secured Pepsi’s approval (given the implicit tribute, why would Pepsi say “no”?). The Halfway House has not changed at all from 1992 and neither really has Cindy. The rest of the props were easy to replicate.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The issue was the two boys who were never in the same frame as Cindy in the advert and would be even harder to acknowledge or incorporate into one photograph whilst maintaining the narrative. The idea I went along with was to use wolves instead - that way I could introduce a new angle without losing the integrity of the adaptation.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I wanted the supposed wolves to be looking keenly towards Cindy and the only way that could work in my set was to have them approaching her from behind. Since the roof was down in the car, it made sense for them to have stealthily sneaked into the back seats whilst she went about her business. There is the necessary hunger and yearning in their disposition.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Cindy looks fabulous and makes the image which we all agreed had to be in colour. I must make mention of Peter Savic - the legendary hair stylist who worked with Cindy on the original commercial. But waiting for the sun to go down does raise the risk of failure, as coupling neon signs and car headlights with panelled Led lighting, is not straightforward. Moreover, the working light is still not generous and the camera’s ability to capture the intended narrative is pushed to the limits; slower shutter speeds, wider apertures and higher ISOs.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e On this 1950s set - built in Santa Clarita near Los Angeles - my excellent production team gave me the chance to create something very special.  American icon Cindy Crawford would be my lead, so there was a little bit of pressure to be on my game, especially as Cindy had made the location famous from the iconic 1992 Pepsi commercial. The gas station and cafe haven’t changed much and neither, in fact, has Cindy.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e My preconception was to use the panel lighting to showcase Cindy in an intense rain storm. The rain would pop much more than it would do in daylight. I could see the potential of the concept; the set, complete with 1950s La cop cars, was authentic and all the angles worked. There was an intended nod to the wonderful movie - La Confidential - but the problem was that her period evening glam look would be immediately vulnerable to the rain.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In my creative processing beforehand I had established in my mind that there could not be many retakes of this shoot.  Her hair, so intelligently styled by the legendary Peter Savic, would be in trouble after just a few seconds; quickly followed by her evening dress.  We had at best 10 seconds to get the shot.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e What I knew was that Cindy is a trooper and indeed she smashes this picture. There are few people that would perform so professionally under such circumstances. She is as good as it gets and this picture is made by her, not me.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I would like to thank Cindy’s excellent A team of Peter Savic, Nicole Allowitz, Jennifer Jacobs and Sam Visser. There was a spirit of freedom captured so well in the 1969 movie Easy Rider and by bands such as the Eagles, who encouraged us to “take it easy”.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Whilst I did not take this photograph standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona and whilst none of the bikers look remotely like Peter Fonda, there is a deliberate nostalgic nod to a freewheeling era in American history. My goal was to make a photograph to elicit memories of the America we once knew.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e But this vignette is, of course, completed by perhaps America’s most loved supermodel - Cindy Crawford. I had long admired Peter Lindberg’s work for the Breitling Squad campaign which also played on this theme and I also knew how Hollywood always enjoys work showcasing itself. The nod to Peter Lindberg was apposite as he and Cindy often collaborated together to great effect.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It dawned on me that those with cameras could be press men as opposed to film makers and the narrative could lean on the intense media interest Hollywood stars have long received. Since the Press tend to hang as a pack, I could play on that and throw in a wolf. The premise was that the vignette should live and breathe cinema.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e My instincts were that Cindy should be enjoying the attention and her face should glow, not scowl. Over the years I have learnt that she is very comfortable playing a role and the look certainly works here.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The still cameraman in the photograph is Dimitri Dimitrov - Sunset Tower’s much loved and celebrated Maître D. He has had so many cameo roles in Hollywood over the years and I did not want to miss out. In part because I can give a nod to one of the most famous hotels in the world without killing the compositional balance and in part because the famous vertical billboard, so often used by Marlboro in the old days, is in the heart of the image.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It is a special part of Americana and I am surprised that American icons have not been filmed more often in this location. I guess one reason is that it’s a very busy road and shutting it down for filming is not easy.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The idea of shooting here needed work and refinement. We needed a lead, we needed to close the road down and then we needed a creative idea around which to wrap everything. My choice of lead was easy; Cindy Crawford is made for this shot. In the Uk we have many numbers of pubs called “The Fox and Hound” and here, arriving at the hotel entrance in La, is the ultimate “Fox” - Cindy, with the most excited of hounds.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I remember that Sunday morning shoot well.  Cindy looked fantastic and her team of Peter Savic (hair); Sam Visser (make up) and Nicole Allowitz (styling) are the best in the business, as of course is Cindy. Breaking Bad was an epic, game changing series and anything that borrows the name must be visually appropriate as well as eye grabbing and powerful.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I had long sensed that the concept of filming with Cindy Crawford in a Californian Biker Bar had potential, especially if the bikers had a palpable sense of menace and trouble. I knew that she could more than hold her own in playing bad ass and therefore there could be unity across the ensemble, irrespective of the apparent rogue member. I need a collective, not six or seven individuals.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The interior of Joshua Tree Saloon in the town of the same name, offered a great canvas on which to paint this story and as always there was a jeweller’s eye attention to detail. I required as much information in one frame as possible and this demanded that I use width rather than height.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e When I saw the result, I sensed I had my Breaking Bad shot. There is nothing I would change in it and I think Bryan Cranston et al would feel rather at home in the saloon.  There seems little appetite for cultural refinement or mundane conversation.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Cindy excels at this kind of work and it is always a privilege to work with her. It is all so unfamiliar and there is no guide as to where to start.  The sensory overload can be intimidating and it takes time to distill and be oneself. Most second dates are better than the first and those who like a restaurant on their first visit will tend to enjoy it even more on the second and so it goes on. If this wasn’t the case, the brain is not the organ we give it credit for being. We are all incremental learners and we enjoy and leverage familiarity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    The first time I visited this railway track in the hot Californian desert, I knew it had visual potential, especially if I shot late in the afternoon and directly against the light, but I needed a month or so to let the cocktail of what I could do marinate in my own mind.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    My predilection is to avoid the static or the mundane and planes, trains and cars in a still can look frozen.  A plane defies gravity so that helps in a single image, but I knew the car and the train could not join it.  I don’t envy Formula 1 photographers; it’s such a difficult sport to take stills of. My visual leaning was to have a sense of movement elsewhere and that’s where the idea of dust being kicked up from railway workers offered a solution.  The light would be my partner.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    Once the premise is there, it is about scalpel sharp precision in the detail. Let's not have any car - let’s have a vintage 1953 Ferrari and let's not have any girl holding the image together, let’s have Cindy Crawford - perhaps America’s most loved and celebrated model.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    The styling in this shot was excellent and I thank Nicole Allowitz for being so good at her craft. This photograph is as much a testament to her as it is to me. The railway workers are so on point, as, of course, is Cindy.  She is a given.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    It is possible that some of my work over the last 10 years - particularly with wildlife - has been imitated and filmmakers have every right to do so. I celebrate a good picture like everyone else and there are some very able cameramen out there. Not only is it 100 degrees outside; we are on a main road deep in the Californian desert and there are tourists swarming the area around Roy’s not quite believing their luck at seeing Cindy and yet we managed to pull this off. It was cinema ahead of its time and I admit to watching that sequence more times than would be considered normal.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e During Covid, we played on this storyline near my home in Devon, but in 2023 I drew up a more ambitious story that would be played out in the isolated desert community of Amboy, California.  We had scouted the area intensely and knew our angles, our light and most of all the landowners.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The premise was to style the set as if we were indeed in the late 1950s and we recognised that we had a strong backdrop, as Roy’s Cafe is one of the treasure trove authentic landmarks of Route 66.  From Roy’s looking east, the Mother Road stretches straight to the horizon in a way that plays to our preconceptions of Americana road trips. We then brought in a 1953 Ferrari 250 Mm Vignale Spyder as the lead car and dressed the background with a Ford pick-up from the late 1940s.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e But this was mere window dressing and my sense was that in order to transcend, this story required some heavyweight components. Flatteringly, Cindy Crawford agreed to be the main protagonist and I knew she would give Cary Grant a run for his money.  Cindy is the best of the best and it is always a huge honour to work with her. Ascribe her a role and a look and she will nail it every time.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e But we also needed a plane. Amboy has a tiny runway strip and towards the end of the day, when the traffic is lighter, a good pilot can flirt with the tarmac of Route 66. I needed a pilot whom I could trust and I found him in Greg Caldwell, who slightly reminded me of the heroic crop spraying pilot from the movie Independence Day. We had worked with him before and there didn’t seem much to trouble Greg - not even his plane’s aerial proximity to a $10m Ferrari or, more importantly, one of the world’s most identifiable and revered women.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e There is a film noir feel to the image and I think the relatively flat light helps the rather menacing mood. But the credit lies with both Greg and Cindy who did exactly what I asked them to do.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I guess we may have broken some new ground here as well as a few rules. The mountainous backdrop to the circuit defines it as much the 1950s buildings scattered around the pit area.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    In the movie, Matt Damon plays Carroll Shelby enlisted by Ford to try and compete on the racetrack with Ferrari. The film reaches its climax at Le Mans in 1966 where Shelby’s car gets the better of Ferrari. It seemed appropriate therefore to bring a 1966 Ford Mustang Shelby Gt 350 as our principal prop in this period tableau.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    But our ambitions were high and our large cast was led by Cindy Crawford who I knew would own her role as a triumphant racer. She always delivers and has such presence in this photograph. It is always validating to work with her and our commitment to our craft is never higher than on these occasions.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    Two days before we shot, I found myself sitting near Christian Bale at a West Hollywood restaurant and I remembered how integral he was to the movie. I knew a Texan model who could play to that vibe and my instincts were to quickly drag him in at the last moment. He slipped in the space behind Cindy and I think he elevates the image. It’s the little things.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    Motor racing enthusiasts will also see “The King” Richard Petty behind the car on the right. Richard, who won the Daytona 500 seven times, was a joy to have on set and added to the freewheeling joy of the day.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    The title of this photograph is fitting as Cindy Crawford and I were both born in 1966. Founded in Detroit, Michigan by Henry Ford in 1903, the voting structure means that it has been in continuous family control for over 100 years, despite being a public company. Today it remains one of the largest family-controlled companies in the world.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    Henry Ford is rightly recognised as one of America’s great industrialists and the early car models, like the mass-produced Ford Model T, changed how Americans travelled and lived. Two generations later, in the 1960s, Ford challenged Ferrari’s dominance in the racing car marketplace; an unlikely story that was well chronicled in the movie Ford v Ferrari.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    Some of the scenes from that film were shot at Willow Springs race circuit in California and we were excited to have access to this location to tell our own Ford racing division stories.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    The 1967 Ford Gt40 Mk111 sits strikingly low to the ground and I saw an opportunity to pair the car with Cindy Crawford’s long legs. Hopefully the visual mismatch would then serve to highlight and showcase the beauty of both subjects.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    Cindy is one of the brightest of the lead supermodels since the 1980s and role playing is hardly a challenge for her. Meanwhile I suspect that Jimmie Johnson - one of the most successful Nascar racers of all time - is also a performing artist in his spare time. The camera likes him and he likes the camera. The two American stars lives had not crossed until that day in Willow Springs, but they worked well together in this set and this photograph is certainly a keeper. My direction was 150 years ago Wild West - appropriate as in the 1860s, over 15,000 lived in Virginia City and The Pioneer Bar would have been very busy.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAll 7 characters played their roles well that day, but perhaps the picture is stolen by a lovely 85-year-old lady called Mary from Butte, Montana.
