The ski run down the hill is often complicated by the amount of alcohol consumed before revellers are reunited with their skis.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Aspen is Shangri-La to both seasoned visitors and residents and Cloud 9, with its dramatic location and reputation for glamour and excess, is a part of the jigsaw making Aspen the most famous Ski resort in the world.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e My plan was to film up at Cloud 9 and style it in 1970s clothing as a nod to a period when Aspen really established its reputation as a bohemian paradise for the chic and the celebrated.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I booked two great girls - Brooks Nader - a high energy, livewire who has worked with me over the last couple of years and then the wonderful Brazilian - Alessandra Ambrosio - the queen of fashion shows and modelling for the last 15 years. She is a joy to work with and has a fun and unassuming disposition despite her fame. There are few models working today that are as loved and respected as Alessandra.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The only problem was that we needed to shoot early in the day before the slopes opened and the day was fixed. We woke up to a blizzard and freezing temperatures.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I think adaptation and flexibility are core to what we do.  Perhaps my middle name should be changed to “Plan B”.  I saw the snow as an opportunity not a threat and worked the conditions into the narrative. It was the right call.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e All those familiar with Cloud 9 will, I think, smile when they see this photograph. It was free theatre and we binged on every little detail that was thrown our way. I wonder whether subconsciously we were drawn to this saga of misbehaviour and excess because it offered a forgiving comparative against which to judge our own weaknesses. We have all done some bad things in our lives but hell, these guys set a high bar. Watching the trail was cheaper than going to the therapist and arguably more effective.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e As an artist, I warmed to the idea that the little details in the accusations could all be incorporated into a single image; references such as the jar of blow, the ‘mega pint’ and the bed sheets. But I also needed a full cast and courtroom. A small idea gained momentum and then there was no going back. I never imagined telling this story until it was too late to call it off.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Johnny Depp - or rather a spitting image of Johnny Depp – was a prerequisite for my frame and I always saw him attending court as Jack Sparrow. This option offered pantomime with a twist of reality. If Jack was in attendance, I felt some of his friends and foes from the Caribbean should be there to lend support. In the face of such court room adversity, battle lines should become blurred and there would be a call to put down arms. The treasure hunting, piracy and sea sovereignty could wait until this nasty domestic issue was put to bed. Team Johnny was a unified front.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e My leaning was that my camera should prioritise on the real star of the show - Johnny’s lawyer, Camille Vasquez. She had a presence and style that needed to be celebrated at the front of the frame. Brooks Nader - a regular lead for us - was perfect for this role as she embodies the same attributes. I told Jack to wear a look of studied admiration for his lawyer as I felt that connection was important to amplify. When I first saw this gallows, high in the mountains of Montana, I knew I had a prop, but the story around it would need some thought. There needed to be a twist.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Ostensibly, filming a public hanging in a frontier town is not the most appealing of concepts. If there is no context it could all be a little dark and macabre. Our starting premise in all that we do is to entertain rather than shock; we want to be playful long before we want to be earnest.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e My revisionist take was to play on the idea that in this merciless and uncompromising era, there would be someone embracing the fact that justice had been done with the demise of the criminal. That person would be the lead in the image, rather the camera being focused on the gallows itself.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e We chose American model Brooks Nader as the saloon girl who, for whatever reason, chose to celebrate the impending death. Brooks is smart and knew exactly how to play the role and introduce sexuality into a scene that otherwise could be all too sombre. I told her my camera was about to dive into the pages of a western storybook and all that really mattered was her look - it had to be right. She was perfect for the role that cold January morning.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e My sense is that these occasions were all too frequent in the loosely governed Wild West. Despite the church in the background, nihilism was at the core of civilisation in this part of the world in 1890 and death was not an event in itself. Any given Sunday, something could happen and it would not normally be that good.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It looks like, on this Sunday, it was about to all kick off. Nicolas Cage recently held court here in a scene from the 2023 movie The Old Way. I was visually drawn to the two-tiered structure and the staircase connecting one to the other and I knew it could offer another layer in which to tell a story of life in a wild west bar.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I don’t think I am saying anything original when I say that focus is the key word in the vernacular of photography. Focus should deliberately include or it should deliberately exclude . When working in minimal light conditions like this old saloon, the starting premise is to know that 90% of the frame will be out of focus and to be excited rather than worried about it. It is an advantage not a disadvantage.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I think this photograph is made by the very limited depth of field not hampered by it. The cowboys in the back are pivotal to the story, but they can have anonymity as they are contextual. Meanwhile the girls and the wolf must be sharp as they lead the story. That was the hard bit, as the wolf has a spring in his step.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The two saloon girls were directed to have a look of menace and that’s exactly what they gave me. It’s difficult to play that look and keep your femininity and hats off to Brooks Nader and Holly Graves. St Barts in the French Caribbean would be one example and then in the San Juan mountains of America, Telluride Airport proudly sits 9000 feet up in the sky. It must be one of the more outrageous places in which to build a commercial airport.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e My idea was to build a story around this airport and the setting demanded some strong props, especially - of course - a plane. We found access to a real beauty. Originally built for the Us Army Air Corps as a C-47-Dl and served in the Us military during World War II in North Africa and in the eighth Air Force. It then went on to participate in the D-Day invasion. In 1946 her job was done and she was converted to what she is today - a Douglas, Dc-3Ce.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The problem was always going to be getting the plane into Telluride and we needed a break in the winter weather. That break came 40 hours before the shoot schedule and we grabbed it. To be candid, I didn’t care about the difficulties of it leaving afterwards; that was someone else’s problem. We just had to make full use of its visual splendour during its short mini break at 9000ft.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I would not be the first to use the metallic splendour of aviation as a prop and then throw in the top models of the era. It’s a combination that worked so well for Norman Parkinson in Nairobi in 1951. The difficulty was making sure I glorified all three parts of the image: the girls, the plan and the unmistakable backdrop of Telluride. For film makers it offers so many canvases on which to tell stories; from majestic “Big Sky” scenery to marooned saloons where the walls talk of the olden days.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Over the years we have established deep friendships in the state with locals who can help either as extras or in logistics. I feel we have the full tool kit here and it shows in our work. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I am not alone in feeling a visceral sense of belonging when I step outside Bozeman airport. As the great American writer John Steinbeck wrote of Montana:\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e “For other states I have admiration, respect, recognition, even some affection, but with Montana it is love, and it’s difficult to analyse love when you’re in it.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This photograph, taken with American model Brooks Nader, makes me smile. It’s The Crazy Mountains in the background and as all those who know Brooks will testify, she operates just outside sanity. Those with a visual sensibility are drawn to the symmetry of the old warehouses, the industrial beauty of Manhattan Bridge and The Empire State Building peeking out in the background, as if to say “don’t you forget about me”. There is an aesthetic perfection and even when cars litter the street, the frame offers a celebration of urban beauty. To tell a story here, I played on the iconic Pretty Woman movie from 1990. Of course, we would be swapping New York for La, but it is not as if the kind of exchange suggested in the photograph is alien to the Big Apple. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I knew Brooks Nader could play Vivian well; after all, she dressed the same way for her Halloween night last year. Better still, her husband Billy, who is in the car, accompanied her as Ed. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Brooks is theatrical and smart. She knew the look for this image and smashed it. But it was a team effort and in particular, we would like to thank the New York Police Department for their support early that morning in Brooklyn. Firstly we must thank the Navajo Nation and their elder Don Mose - who looked after us so well and entertained the crew to dinner. We were honoured to be their guests.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Brooks Nader is a great friend of the crew and always performs, irrespective of the cold or the long hours on the road. My direct was to style her as a dolled up saloon girl with authority and attitude, as well as carrying her usual level of sexual provocation. As directs go, that was probably one of the easier ones Brooks has been given.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The idea for this shoot was to play with both the interior and exterior of the saloon because that would widen my narrative and give a fuller sense of place. Weather patterns do not give the filmmaker the luxury of forward planning in something so specific and we need to plan well in advance.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e What we did know is that these visuals tend to occur towards the end of the ski season at high altitude in both Europe and America. It is uneconomic to snowplough small private roads with further winter storms around the corner, but equally, as soon the spring thaw accelerates, the snow berms on ploughed roads lose their height and grandeur.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e There was some precision required on timing and my intuition suggested that this was a shot for the third week of April, whether the location was in the Alps, the Rockies or the Sierra Nevada Mountain range.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e We knew we would be filming in America after Easter and our research concluded that the ski area that tends to have the most amount of spring snow in the Us is the Sierras. Historically the mountains above Lake Tahoe get dumped on in March and the snow above 7000 ft can still be very deep in mid-April. To shoot in California rather than Colorado was a big call, but we felt it gave us the best chance and the best access. The snow season runs late in Lake Tahoe.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Our team based themselves out of the old railroad town of Truckee, California and with the help of some properly informed mountain men, we found our precise location and went to work. When I arrived on set, it was one of the few times in the last few years when I have been visually arrested by what was in front of me. This was an exceptional setting and an entirely secret one too. I knew it offered potential because the dusty amphitheatre was framed by sizeable mountains to the south and west. Also, there was one solitary tree standing out from the scrubland, which could be used as a prop. It immediately looked like a place where people would camp in the fabled days of the American West. With that in mind, we arranged for an antique wagon to come from the other side of the State.  The last mile was not easy for the wagon or those responsible for its delivery but we know that it is that extra mile that always matters.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It is a little intense shooting in the last minutes of daylight as there is a need for many composition decisions to be taken in full knowledge that there is no second chance. This is no time to iterate, only time to be instinctive, especially with a herd of cattle roaming freely around the wagon. Most of the time in these situations, I find something that is not quite right and the moment is lost. However, it is much better to roll the dice and play with the benefits offered by twilight; appropriate lighting is integral to our creative processing.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e On this occasion the tableau worked as well as I could possibly have hoped and there is nothing I would change. I am a greedy storyteller and my preference is for every inch of frame to contribute in some way, but this approach risks unintentional visual tension points.  It is the part of the job that I take the most satisfaction from when I deliver, as it is not easy.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Brooks Nader’s styling was influenced by Sienna Miller’s character in Kevin Costner’s Horizon. I wanted to couple a simple white lace dress with dirt; this, after all, was the Wild West not a Victorian drama in England. Brooks is not precious and was more than happy to get dirty to play the role.  There is no easier model to work with or instruct.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e West Texas is such a giving place to ply my craft, not just because of its lonesome beauty, but because of the cowboys and ranchers living there. The one constant was the backdrop, which offered an emphatic sense of place.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e We filmed this project 25 miles from the Mexican border and 25 miles from the drive by town of Van Horn, which is marooned in the middle of nowhere. I believe we were in virginal territory for this kind of production and I am so appreciative of the local ranchers who allowed us to put everything together, they have enough on their hands in this region right now. I would imagine we were the first legal visitors on this land for quite a while.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Location scouting is an integral part of the job but in ecosystems as vast as this in this part of Texas, we must subcontract the initial work to locals otherwise we would have to give up our day jobs. I thank Craig Carter and his team for understanding our creative needs.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e When I watched Kevin Costner’s Horizon, I thought Sienna Miller stole many scenes, not just with her beauty and screen presence, but with her styling; its refined simplicity offered a stark contrast to the untamed and merciless Wild West. All the assets in play seem to complement each other, but only one party is perhaps alive to all the facts - the wolf.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Tall snow berms like the ones in the photograph are not easy to find these days and our research led us to Lake Tahoe in late April. The Sierra Nevada Mountain range still gets hefty 3-foot snowfalls in March; perhaps as much as any ski area in the world and this is where we focused our efforts.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Meanwhile, the 1953 250MM Ferrari, is a precious car and we needed to be very sure there was easy access to this location. So I guess we were being greedy as we wanted deep accumulations of snow, along with fresh snow on a newly ploughed road and then, somehow or other, the means to get the Ferrari in position on the bend in the road. We have little appetite for doing banal things that come easy.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e When we arrived, the height of the berms offered an opportunity to use the black wolf we sometimes bring on set. The Amalfi Coast is the great creator’s aesthetic masterclass and, in this most spiritual of places, there can be no accommodation for those failing to give thanks for their brief tenancy. We are blessed to be here and this coveted corner of Italy reinforces the compass that always points to the celebration of life. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I wanted to take a picture not only to evoke a sense of joy but one rich in Italian narrative. There needed to be some visual chaos but at the centre of it I wanted to convey an easy admiration for the best things in life. There is nothing to be ashamed of in enjoying the beautiful things: whether it be cuisine; fashion or people and Italians seem to be more comfortable with this default position than most.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I chose Atrani for this photograph partly because it is timeless and partly because the stairs off the main square lead the eye and the windows frame the subject.  It is a wonderful canvas from which to work and it is no surprise that big Hollywood projects such as Ripley and The Equaliser 3 have recently been filmed in this small gem of a town.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Brooks Nader is a star and I often work with her. She is not only striking, but she emotionally engages in every role I ask her to play. She is also great fun to be with. As Ansel Adams instructed us, “photography is often about the pictures of others”, but we just need to execute in our own way.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe beach boys I used that day were all Neapolitans and I told them to enjoy themselves with Brooks Nader - a leading Sports Illustrated swimsuit model and a girl with absurd energy levels. This was not their hardest day at the office, but equally, they had to be as natural and as free as the seas to their left.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ePhotographing a group is never easy; most images don’t stack up as one person can tend to kill an image. But there is a unity of joy in this image and everyone is bang on. He has leveraged his familiarity with the Tyrrhenian Sea to maximum effect and leads a full and happy life. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLike so many skilled Neapolitan traders, he has no elevated sense of worth, simply regarding himself as the current incumbent of a family practice passed down from generation to generation. There is a palpable sense of custodianship and duty that humbled us all. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It is not easy to navigate a fishing boat into the visually arresting and tight Fiordo di Furore, but I knew I wanted to film Vito working his craft in there because the backdrop is ridiculously good. It is one of the great sights in the whole of Italy, but that is a known known, and by 9.30 am it is too crowded with tourists and beachgoers to film.  It is an early morning gig for anyone in my profession or a winter job.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e When we arrived at the ocean entrance at around 8.10 am, I had the famous Sports Illustrated swimsuit model - Brooks Nader - in our boat as we were transferring her by sea between sets (that is the only way on the Amalfi Coast).  As our two boats united in the narrow fjord entrance, I could see Vito’s excitement at my company and meanwhile Brooks is far from shy.  Spontaneously, we transferred her into his boat and both boats fought with currents and waves for the right angle for the camera.  It was not easy for anyone, least of all Brooks with that lobster. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e For a glimpse of a second, it came together, and we had our playful parody. When the cameras were laid down and calm was restored, I asked Vito - “What can we tell people?  Who is the woman in your boat? Most roads only offer a perfunctory way of getting from A to B, but then there are the gems where the journey itself becomes the main event. My home country, Scotland, has the A82 through Glencoe; America has the stretch through Monument Valley, Highway One and many more; Iceland has its entire ring road and then there is the Amalfi coastal road in southern Italy. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It is almost incumbent on any movie director filming in the area, to emphatically locate the destination by celebrating the road. That is instructive as it suggests that to ignore the means of travel is to forget a prop.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The road is terrifying and breathtaking as one: hugging the cliffs on one side and offering vistas of the Tyrrhenian Sea on the other.  John Steinbeck wrote of the terror of winding through the Amalfi Coast on a road that “corkscrewed on the edge of nothing”, clutched in his wife’s arms who was “weeping hysterically”.  Every hairpin bend is a prelude to a new visual feast, and none more so than the bend heading west before Atrani. I knew, at some stage, this bend would find itself in front of my camera.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy leaning was to style a 1970s period shoot with a model capable of capturing the effortless grace and sexuality of Italian models of the time. She had to own the scene without impairing the visual feast behind her. American Supermodel, Brooks Nader, works with us regularly and knew exactly what I wanted from her. My creative pondering never departed much from the premise that this backdrop offered a definitive sense of place and had to be paid homage to.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    Neon lights don’t do themselves justice during the day, but as the bar is busy until closing, 365 days a year, shooting at night offered challenges.  The solution was to film at 5.30 am and, on the morning of the shoot, this offered some bonuses as there was fresh snow and a temperature of 0°F. This extreme cold allowed the exhaust fumes from the Ford Bronco to add more drama to the set.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    I think a few cowboys were left a little disappointed with the manner of the cowgirl’s departure in this tableau.
