It is as good as I can do and probably my most impactful animal portrait for some time. The bison is an emblematic North American animal that roamed the continent millions of years before man. When fully grown, it is a massive beast that deserves our respect and recognition.

When I was researching bison earlier this year, I quickly understood two things – firstly that some rogue bulls carry a serious threat if their space is invaded and secondly that the adult face is both prehistoric and enormous. The bison is all about the face and I sensed that any picture that didn’t recognise this, would miss my goals. My instincts were that the image also needed a sense of “Yellowstone in the winter” and this, combined with the need for proximity, all pointed to a ground level, remote control approach.

To work with ground level radio controlled cameras and a prime wide angle is very much my signature style, but it is easier with elephants in Amboseli, than bison in Yellowstone. This is not an easy location – our guide suggested that 95% of Yellowstone is out of bounds in winter. It is the most geothermally active park in the world, throw avalanches, wolves and bears into the mix and we have a primordial soup of creation.

I failed about 10 times with my camera positioning and I tweaked my lens/camera combination constantly. It was most frustrating and I was generally grumpy. But on the third day at about 2 pm, it all came together. The trees and the sky are most helpful additives – but what a face and what a back structure. I haven’t seen this sort of image of a big bison before.

I would like to thank Tom Murphy, one of America’s most acclaimed nature photographers, for assisting me on this assignment. We were both frustrated by the milder weather at the start of the week, but his knowledge and fireside tales of the area kept the spirits up. A good 20 years ago in the depth of a very cold winter, Tom – equipped with just a light tent – took a back country ski trip across the 100 km span of Yellowstone – a remarkable feat that truly humbles anything I have ever achieved and a trip that will soon be commemorated by a long awaited documentary film.
Ice Age
Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming – 2019

After three days in Yellowstone Park this week, I was suffering from the flu. It is a stunningly raw and beautiful park in the winter but it can also be extremely cold. The steam from the thermal activity freezes on whatever it can - including the big bisons that gravitate there to keep warm. I have waited for a very cold day like yesterday in Yellowstone for a long time, but looking at me this morning I have certainly paid the price.

This kind of photography may test one's appetite to work in extreme conditions, but it also tests our maths. I have never taken a photograph of anything on an aperture of F18 before, but I did yesterday as I wanted as much depth of focus as possible. My inclination was to be greedy and to try and have the bison’s nose in focus and also her eyes. So I sacrificed shutter speed and resolution and hoped for the best. It was impossible to check too much in the field, but when we returned home, I found one gem. I hope she is feeling better than me today. If it was the same bison, in the same field at midday in the summer, there would be nothing special at all. I am reminded that we always have to fight to get what we want. Big bull bison in the snow as a starting concept is appealing as they are primeval beasts that survived an ice age and portraits work best when their faces look like monsters from Game of Thrones.

When working in heavy snowfall, there is a need to be as close to the subject as possible so as to reduce the number of snowflakes hitting the line of path between the camera and the subject. Too much and the whole thing becomes a little too abstract.

It is not permitted to be within 25 metres of a bison in Yellowstone and this rule is often enforced in a charmless and dictatorial way. There is actually a prison at the north entrance in Yellowstone and visitors are left in little doubt that transgressions within the park could lead to the transgressor serving time.

That morning in early January 2020, I did not have a measuring tape with me, but I guess I was as close as I could be and maybe a little more. But I was on my own - clearly no one else was daft enough to be out there in that storm just after sunrise. I think the amount of snow detail between the camera and the bison adds to the mood of the image. The river detail behind lends to the power of the image as it gives an emphatic sense of place and season. This proximity came from a combination of my experience of bison movement and fluency in the use of remote control cameras. This is not something people should try in Yellowstone without a good guide and extreme caution.

The second bonus is simply the position of the bison’s head. The big males do resemble beasts from some sort of fantasy production and the lower the camera is relative to the head, the more the sense of an encounter with a creature from another world is amplified. This looks like an animal from a different planet - something “Throners” would expect to see “North of the Wall”. No other mammal on the planet looks more like a monster than a male bison in the winter.

The third helpful variable is his front left leg suggests movement towards me and that is fortunate as bison can often be stagnant when they are feeding. This picture has the dynamism we often seek.

We took this picture so early in the day that no one else was in Yellowstone National Park. I will leave others to decide if it is a monster of a photograph, but it is as good as I can possibly do. His size, the mountain on the left, the snow laden forest on the right and the virginal snow in the foreground all coalesce in the most fortuitous manner. Meanwhile, the early morning sunlight allows for every detail on the bison’s face.

This portrait was taken with a 35mm lens, the best portrait lens I know and this image is proof as to why. Setting the remote up was not that challenging as the massive bull was some distance from me at the time, but we then had to hope that we’d got both the maths and the bison’s direction of travel right. But this was down to luck more than judgement and this one image is perhaps the reward for the multiple of times we have failed. It is their toughness that defines them and their thick coats seem to make so much more sense on a bitingly cold winter’s day. The morning must be exceptionally cold (certainly below minus 10º F) to allow the steam rising from the thermal springs and rivers to ice cake all matter nearby, including bison. There are fewer days like this in the National Park than there used to be.

The complication is that the exceptionally cold days tend to be clear, high-pressure days and we must therefore find the bison before the sun takes hold of the light.

In our experience some parts of the road up to Old Faithful from Madison Junction can be shrouded in freezing mist on cold mornings, but there is only a small 60-minute window before that mist and fog evaporate under the sun. In that hour, we must find a bull and settle in under his watchful eye.

This is therefore a low percentage quest in a tightly regulated National Park, and we have failed on so many occasions. A prescriptive process pushes against the notion of freedom of expression. Warhol is often credited with the line “art is whatever you can get away with” and whether he actually said that is secondary to the power of the message. Authenticity is everything and it should be a personal crusade.

I do think, however, that visual harmony within an image is something to strive for if it is available. If there is some stability in the weightings, or even better, a symmetry, the photograph - whatever the subject - can be more pleasing on the viewer’s eye. Chaos works for photojournalists capturing decisive moments, but what I try to do is make pictures as opposed to take them. It is a less relevant and a less noble genre of photography than working on the Foreign News desk and the goals are entirely different.

These thoughts were very much on my mind in Yellowstone National Park when working with this lone bison. The only shot that could work had to have symmetry as well as detail. If the bison was a meter either side of this position then there would be no image.

Of course, the truth was that most of the photographs that morning were lopsided and aesthetically awkward. The bison would not be at right angles to my camera and not starring down my lens or the head would clash with the trees and create a nasty tension point. It’s a low percentage gig.

Luckily all a photographer needs to show is one shot.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0274/0553/files/yarrow_david_635_a_walk_in_the_woods_122x234_af015be1-81ed-460f-996e-ca597a923a4b.jpg?v=1786796527
david-yarrow-road-rage
Road Rage
Road Rage
Yellowstone National Park – 2026

Yellowstone is the only place in the United States where bison have lived continuously since prehistoric times. By 1902, poachers had reduced Yellowstone’s herd to about two dozen animals but the recent estimates suggest this has grown to around 5,000-5,400. It is America's largest and oldest wild, free-roaming herd.

We only film bison in Yellowstone in the depths of winter. There are two reasons for this: one of course is that the traffic is bearable in the winter and we are very often on our own and out of the park by 10 am; the second more important factor is that the presence of snow plays to the animal’s fortitude. I would not film the Amalfi coast in the winter, as it is a summer holiday destination, and in the same way I have no interest in filming in Yellowstone in July.

I tend to focus on the male bison which can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand 6 feet tall. From the right angle, their enormous heads and curved horns elicit imagery of mythological beasts; they are part cow and part fantasy. The bison are a revered part of the tapestry of Americana.

This immersive photograph was shot on a remote camera with a wide-angle lens on the road between West Yellowstone and Madison Junction. It’s an iterative process and I often fail simply because I am not in charge of the bison’s movement. But a pattern can develop and then we must be patient.

Yellowstone is very accessible these days and there are many photographers up there every day. Our cognitive processing tends to elicit visual symbolisms that are consensual - mention the word “Nevada” and we think of gambling in a desert.

But Florida is more complicated. It cannot be conveniently categorised or boxed. On the coast is Miami, with its tourist beaches, Art Deco, influencers, pop culture and Hispanic soul. Then up the road is Palm Beach with its genteel “Slim Aarons” high-society life of golf, tennis, bridge and cocktails.
The two communities could not be more different in culture and ethnicity.

They only have two things in common: favourable taxes and proximity to America’s Jurassic Park - an untamed territory that remains primeval and largely closed for business. The swamps of Florida were not made for human life, yet they sit within 30 miles of two of the most evolved and desirable places to live in the world. It is as stark a visual dislocation as there can be.

In no part of America does the price of real estate fall quicker than when travelling west from the Atlantic beaches of southern Florida. There are too many insects and far too many dangerous reptiles for sane mankind.

The emblematic beast of Florida is the alligator and for the 56,000 students at the University of Florida, life would be different if “Gators” did not exist. The big gators in the swamps are formidable adversaries.

This photograph was only captured after considerable research and conversations with those familiar with the location. The camera was controlled remotely, and no one was in danger during this project.
