But spring is short in Aspen and many businesses close to give their staff a break and the premises some maintenance. It is the off-season, and for many locals it is their favourite time of year; some serenity and peace return to the town.

This makes it an ideal time to film - roads are quiet, hotels are less busy and restaurants are easier to book. From a visual perspective, spring also offers great opportunity as there will be snow at a higher elevation and fresh greens in the valleys below. If the intent is to look for a wide tonal range in a photograph, spring is a good choice.

Ansel Adams loved the diffused light of spring and the rich tonal range it offered. He often chose this period to film in Yosemite; melting snow can be used to the photographer’s advantage - it is not always about mud.

We have filmed on this road before but never looking back down the valley and past Aspen itself. Its size and ornate brickwork remind us that Victorian architectural ambition extended beyond New York and Chicago, reaching even remote mining communities 8,000 feet up in the Rockies.

The Jerome has witnessed much change in Aspen over 140 years: a tough blue-collar community evolved into a modest winter sports destination welcoming hipsters and artists as well as cowboy capitalists. Aspen then, of course, slowly grew into its role as the world’s most celebrated ski resort. It has lived more lives than most communities ever will.

The Jerome’s story is unique and it will no doubt continue to hold court long after we are all gone. It is the one historical constant the town can boast of, having hosted every conceivable archetype over its long life.

The hotel chooses not to judge, but if the room walls could talk, there would be a large volume of stories to come from behind that grand brickwork facade. Not all guest behaviour at the Jerome has come from the highest ethical drawer and I think its legendary status is enhanced by that. This is no gateway to heaven; there is too much history of scandal and vice behind the brickwork.

My homage to the grandness of the Jerome demanded compositional balance and good spatial sensitivity. I knew my shooting position and for this to work I needed the help of the Aspen police department who have always been a joy to deal with.

We had no desire to be lame with our props and brought one of the world’s most expensive cars - the Ferrari 250 GTO - onto the set. I am clearly not alone in considering the view south from turnoff 13 on the way to Mexican Hat to be one of the most visually intoxicating sights in the Us. It was, of course, used in Forrest Gump and then provided the front cover to Ridley Scott’s Thelma and Louise. The Us has taken ownership of the term “road trip” as explained succinctly by this stretch of tarmac. It's truly an iconic and timeless vista that shouts “The Wild West”.

Gladiator is probably Ridley Scott's finest movie and I have watched it over and over again. Meanwhile, Thelma and Louise is rightly one of the most lauded road trip movies of all time. About a month ago, I picked up the Dvd box and had a moment of inspiration. Their use of the convertible car and the head on angle offered a totally different perspective on Monument Valley.

Taking my pre-conception through to reality that Wednesday morning was no small task. I want to thank Brawler Productions in La for collaborating with me and helping secure exclusive use of the road at the key time, around 7.40 am. It's a busy road and the Utah State Police were fantastic. Josie Canseco played her role brilliantly - it was not easy to look that glamorous and in charge with a wolf sitting in Thelma’s seat. It is no surprise that Victoria’s Secret has booked her for its latest show in Nyc.

We arrived on site two days before the shoot as we wanted to be in control of everything within our control. I can’t remember ever pondering more over camera settings and lenses. I kNew I would have a generous amount of light to play with at 7.40 and we had to use it well. The big variable was the wolf’s behaviour - the light gets too harsh from about 8am and therefore there was only a small window to get the job wrapped. It was tight, but we did it. All in all, it was a great team effort in a fairly remote part of the American West.

When we showed this picture for the first time in late September the reaction was huge. It is such an iconic stretch of road that has played host to Hollywood stars and their cars for generations. The stretch heading west from Chateau Marmont to the Sunset Plaza is a rich feast for filmmakers, framed on either side with enormous billboards. Sunset Boulevard takes people on their own American dream - it is difficult not to feel energised when driving on it. But it is far from easy to photograph here - it is a busy
highway and the only time it can be closed down for filming tends to be early on a Sunday morning.

Furthermore, to be able to use wolves in the car – integral to the theme of the series – West Hollywood was out of bounds as they do not allow the use of exotic animals in outdoor filming. Hollywood, however, does and the boundary line is right by Chateau Marmont. To an extent, this made our choice of location relatively
straightforward. Including the Chateau billboards or the Chateau itself would locate the image emphatically. The Castle On Sunset, as it is now affectionately known, is notorious - conjuring up imagery of sex, drugs and general bad behaviour. LaSalle Street in Chicago, looking toward the Chicago Board of Trade Building, is an iconic American view. Director Sam Mendes used it in the mobster classic The Road to Perdition, and it has been glorified in many Batman iterations. Chicago is urban beauty at its best, and the presence of such a big building at the end of a street offers opportunities that Manhattan simply does not give. The eye is grabbed and then led deep into the vortex of Gotham.

I wanted a story that was cinematic and visceral, and my founding principle was that my team had to shoot at night. I wanted a big sky and a layered narrative, so I knew long before we shot that I would be working with a wide-angle lens from the car bonnet, with limited depth of field. I have long had an obsession with the frontier settlements and Butte is visually one of the best because it straddles a hill. Between 1900s - 1950 the town represented a microcosm of final frontier life in the Wild West. So much so, that there have been many retakes and parodies. As we all know, it featured a 26-year-old Crawford pulling up to the Halfway Café in a red sports car wearing a white tank top and jean shorts. Two young boys stare as the supermodel buys a Pepsi from a vending machine and drinks it down.

For some time I had yearned to do my own interpretation of the advert with a still photograph and I secured Cindy’s involvement, who in turn secured Pepsi’s approval (given the implicit tribute, why would Pepsi say “no”?). The Halfway House has not changed at all from 1992 and neither really has Cindy. The rest of the props were easy to replicate.

The issue was the two boys who were never in the same frame as Cindy in the advert and would be even harder to acknowledge or incorporate into one photograph whilst maintaining the narrative. The idea I went along with was to use wolves instead - that way I could introduce a new angle without losing the integrity of the adaptation.

I wanted the supposed wolves to be looking keenly towards Cindy and the only way that could work in my set was to have them approaching her from behind. There can be a crispness to the detail that grabs the eye and energises a frame. But waiting for the sun to go down does raise the risk of failure, as coupling neon signs and car headlights with panelled Led lighting, is not straightforward. Moreover, the working light is still not generous and the camera’s ability to capture the intended narrative is pushed to the limits; slower shutter speeds, wider apertures and higher ISOs.

On this 1950s set - built in Santa Clarita near Los Angeles - my excellent production team gave me the chance to create something very special. An imposing vertical cliff face bullies main street and adds to the sense of ‘a town at the end of the line’. Creede plays to the lore and mythology of the wild west and consequently is awash with tourists during the summer. However, in the mid-winter, the place has an abandoned look to it and this was always going to be the best time to film. It would be a bridge too far to try to close the town down in July.

We had been throwing around ideas as to where to stage a Bonnie and Clyde story and chose Creede, not just because the high street is little changed from the 1920s, but because the locals, including the sheriff and the council, were fully supportive of our concept. To a man, the town folk of Creede were committed to helping us bring the project to fruition. For two days, our crew and extras seemingly doubled the winter population of Creede and the one restaurant in town was at capacity most of the time.

Fine tuning the composition was a challenge as ideally, I wanted Bonnie - played by Cara Delevingne - to be as big a part of the image as possible, but I also needed the buildings on both sides of the street to frame the narrative in the middle. In celebrated American resort destinations such as Aspen, they can outnumber grounded commercial aircraft 20 to 1. Flying privately makes travel comfortable and appeals to those long of cash and short of time, but to film in a private jet and merely tell a story of luxury, has always struck me as banal and creatively stiff.

Instead, I wanted to use the tube of a private jet to tell a story of excess and bad behaviour; if jets are private, then by definition anything is permissible and the word Pj can elicit imagery of sex, drugs and rock and roll. It is not, of course, a linear relationship and most passengers on private jets are model citizens simply travelling in the most perfunctory of ways from A to B. With satanic chimneys belching smoke and cobbles awash with industrial grime, the period drama brought hellish industrial Uk into our living rooms but did it with an admirable swagger and aesthetic genius. The anomaly of Peaky Blinders is that cinematography made hell look attractive.

Audiences around the world found themselves engaged by a new street subculture and sympathising with men with totally disposable moral fibre. Birmingham in the Uk became known around the world for what it was portrayed to be like 100 years ago rather than what it is like now. That’s quite a trick.

My creative leaning was to twist the narrative a little. Cillian Murphy owned every scene in the series with a mesmerising intensity, but what if the leader of the gang was a woman? Most of the women in the series were depicted either as objects of lust or familial loyalty rather than necessarily agents of their own destiny. They faded into the scenery as often happens in mobster shows.

In my mindset there was only one girl to do this job - the irrepressible force of nature that is Cara Delevingne. As I often say to those that ask, “It’s her eyes”.

There was a big cast that day and everyone played their role. It was not just the speed of change that distinguished Telluride from other resorts, it was the fact that mining and skiing, for a brief period, coexisted.

The relative isolation of Telluride delayed the introduction of skiing until 1972, but remarkably, in those bohemian days of hipsters and freewheeling hedonists, the mines of Telluride remained operational. The visual contrast between the old timers and the new generation must have been stark at every level.

The mines have long since closed, and Telluride is now a second home for many Americans who love the grandeur of the mountains and the isolation and the understated charm of a fabled town. But perhaps what is most special about this place is that it was only recently that two subcultures united to make one and there is therefore a sense that the Dna and vibe of the town is entirely unique. It does not pay to have an elitist attitude or look down on people in this town: it is open to all.

The photograph was taken in Schmidt Ranch - the same destination that Quentin Tarantino shot his western masterpiece - The Hateful Eight.
