Andy Warhol said that his favourite colour is black and his other favourite colour is white. Matisse said that it took him 40 years to work out that the most powerful colour is black. In between black and white there is a huge tonal range - it is rather like a piano with 88 keys. This image in Antarctica employs all that piano.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe live our lives in colour, so a departure from literal reality is refreshing and allows for an abstraction - less perhaps is more. On the basis of this alone, I fancy that this image might have struck a chord with him. I have been seeking an abstract image like this for some time and have consistently failed partly because the zebra is so skittish and this has prevented me from getting close enough to play with the patterns.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nBut the bigger issue is that if all the zebras are on the same piece of at land, as is usually the case, one animal tends to block the body of those behind. As I thought about the riddle, it dawned on me that the odds of success would narrow if I could find zebras stacked on a hill. This rules out the majority of locations because of their flat topography.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nLewa was therefore going to be my best chance of an outstanding image – there are hills and steep areas where the zebra can congregate. Of course there is no assurance that zebras will be in these areas at the same time as my camera lens. But the more time I employed the greater the chance of success.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nI had then to get lucky with the formations. The grevy zebra, for which Lewa is renowned, also have such distinctive and pristine stripes that are thinner than other breeds to the south. The stripes are also very much white on a black background as opposed to black on a white coat and this works well.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nWhen this image presented itself in my viewfinder, I could not quite believe my luck. Thank goodness I remembered to press the shutter. I do not want to take myself too seriously and if I can use creativity as an antidote to the dangers of working in a literal straight jacket, I most certainly will.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The trouble with being led by creative forces is that more often than not, we cannot find the narrative or the idea.  It is the equivalent of writer’s block. I can go weeks without an authentic idea that holds promise and feasibility. Ideas don’t tend to come on cue, they often arrive in the middle of the night. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This concept excited me from the day it was conceived. The Schmid Ranch, high up in the mountains of Colorado, was Tarantino’s location for The Hateful Eight and when we visited the location in early 2021, I saw the potential of building a set around which to work.  The ranch saddles a truly spectacular amphitheater.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In 2021, there is no more contemporary or talked about asset to own than Bitcoin and the majority who own it, hold on to it with great conviction. I sensed that there was room to play a little parody in a wild west setting - Red Dead Redemption was going to tackle cryptocurrency head on.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The final frontier was a tough place where the rule of law was light and valuable possessions would not be lost without an often deadly fight. The lead character in this narrative was clearly not going to give up his asset easily - his loss would be someone else’s gain. I wanted to create a palpable sense of trespass and Ty Mitchell was the perfect character to play the role of the unyielding owner. It is a crowded space and every day sensational natural world images are garnered from around the planet from accomplished wildlife photographers. I am just not sure where that space is going at a time of such abundance of quality content. I certainly don’t see much of it on show at Art Miami and that is a good barometer. Peter Beard was way way ahead of his time.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e His mate, Andy Warhol said that “Art is what you can get away with” and I do get his point. It is for the viewer to decide what is dull and generic, not the practitioner, but I know from my own errors that photographs of decisive moments in the field, or indeed simple portraits, can totally fail to engage third parties who were not there at the time. They can work, but the quest for emotional engagement has never been harder. It is a tough crowd out there in 2022. There is “no importance of being earnest”.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e These musings leant heavily on me as I deliberated what to do differently this time in Antarctica. Installation art interests me as a storyteller and the opportunities are limitless as it is fresh. We decided to bring some canvases down to Antarctica as they can be erected and taken down in 20 minutes without being invasive; a bit like a tent on the ice.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This preconceived image is lifted by two factors that I could not have influenced. Firstly, the textural beauty of the Emperor penguin; she is so La and secondly the fact that the weather was tough. It just works and I know it will divide opinion - but that’s what you need - not ambivalence.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e (For the avoidance of doubt, our installed art in Antarctica was erected on location under Iata guidelines and without the Emperor penguins anywhere near us.
