In the modest village of Kaktovik, I worked with two locals who had a boat license to trawl along the land slip. They kNew the topography of the area intimately and I had briefed them on my style which favoured height alignment and close proximity. However, they also work within strict safety laws and are absolutely forbidden to approach or harass the bears. They can stay still and allow the bears to approach them, so long as they are protected by the hull of their little fishing boat.

I trusted my Inuit guide - he had a weathered and wise countenance and spoke with such familiarity on each bear we saw from our little boat. After two hours of trawling the land strip one evening, the big moment arrived and on reflection I did the very best I could do given the special scene that unfolded in front of me.

This image was run in the British press a few days after my encounter on Barter Island. It is something of a platitude to say that the bigger an image is printed, the greater the detail, but on this occasion it is very pertinent for two reasons.

Firstly, a polar bear is a huge animal. If possible, any portrait should reflect this.

Secondly, the bear is pin sharp around its eyes. I think that I must have been as close to a polar bear as is possible in the wild and lived to tell the tale. I was also using Nikon’s flagship 58m lens, which captures every hair at the assigned focal point. When the first large print of the image came off the drum in La, one of the team turned to me and said, ‘David, look at the eyes – you are in them!’. He was right; I had inadvertently taken a selfie through the eyes of a polar bear.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0274/0553/files/yarrow_david_008__20hello_132x191_99b6dba4-1816-4556-b7f6-fe823e99a845.jpg?v=1785191885
david-yarrow-the-morning-show
The Morning Show
The Morning Show
Kenya – 2020

A glimpse of a moment caught on my remotely controlled camera. The photograph is elevated rather than weakened by the negative space and the bear’s anonymity. Since 2011, I have spent more than 30 days shooting in Svalbard, and this is my favorite image of a polar bear in this part of the Arctic. Indeed, the more I look at it, the prouder I am. As my fellow Scottish photographer and friend the great Harry Benson once said, “Great images can never be repeated.” Others will decide if this is a great image, but it certainly won’t be repeated. The distinctive pads on the sole of his foot immediately grab the eye. The central pad, which resembles the Nike “swoosh,” is the epicenter of a photograph that owes its differentiating content entirely to this right foot. The image is made complete by its own lack of completeness; the storytelling is started by the camera and finished by the viewer. We are asked to finish the story, not just read it, and the spartan economy of the narrative helps along the way. Less is more in the Arctic. Its beauty is in its simplicity and the enormity of the white detail. It conveys a true sense of place.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0274/0553/files/yarrow_david_445__2078_degrees_North_Colour_132x183_eaeaa144-b0ef-4780-b542-3b1cffa73d92.jpg?v=1785192121
david-yarrow-street-car-named-desire-1
Street Car named Desire 1
Street Car named Desire 1
Montana, USA, 2018

This model from Dallas has a big future and I have worked with the very best recently. My overriding goal was to capture a sense of depth and a sense of scale. South Georgia is raw and dramatic with many fiercely steep mountains towering above the wildlife and to exclude them from an image would risk telling only half the story. These mountains define the island.
The riddle is that to include the Everest like peaks and also the wildlife on the beaches below risks the image being too loose - there must be detail in the foreground and this necessitates proximity. So I am wanting everything and that can be a challenge in low light. I dwelt over this dilemma for many hours on the way to South Georgia and I was reminded that simple maths often plays a lead role in making an image.

The lens best equipped for the challenge of giving depth as well as foreground detail is my favourite Nikkor 58mm F1.4 lens - it is the most important piece of camera equipment I own.

The first day on St Andrews Bay, we landed on the beach at 4.40 am, but this was too late to set up and then capture the soft early morning light. So the following day, the whole team was on the beach by 3.50 am - quite an achievement and one we are all retrospectively proud of.

I had my moment in the corner of the beach at about 4.40 am. We calculated that in total we had spent 35 hours in a jeep looking for tigers and in that time, we were with tigers on our own for about 30 minutes. That equates to being employed for about 1.5% of the time and places this assignment right at the low end of what we do, along with polar bears in Svalbard. It is also consistent with my previous trips to Ranthambore, which have all been in the 1-2% range. To offer some context, elephants in Amboseli would be about 40% of available time and lions in the Serengeti about 10%.

Tigers are therefore a big ask in terms of patience and resolve. It is very hot in May and the roads are not made for comfort. These are long days and the drinking water becomes warm by noon - even in a cooler. The upside is that when the encounters happen, they can be spellbinding. The tiger is the stuff of fantasy and fable and it is no surprise that they are many people’s favourite animal. The stripes of a tiger speak to us on many levels.

This mother of three, is well known to the guides and because tigers feel the heat just as much as we do, watering holes in the middle of the day offered the best chance of meeting her in her territory. There is a great amount of luck involved in this approach as I need to be low as well as safe and many watering holes do not allow for this. I needed the right waterhole and to be there at the right time. She also needed to face me - and that in itself was against the odds.

On this occasion, I was able to get very low and she confronted me head on. There was no depth of field available that day, and the vast majority of the images were cluttered and messy—except, thankfully, this one.

The penguins look like a cohesive unit, and there is a touch of menace to their swagger. An imposing vertical cliff face bullies main street and adds to the sense of ‘a town at the end of the line’. Creede plays to the lore and mythology of the wild west and consequently is awash with tourists during the summer. However, in the mid-winter, the place has an abandoned look to it and this was always going to be the best time to film. It would be a bridge too far to try to close the town down in July.

We had been throwing around ideas as to where to stage a Bonnie and Clyde story and chose Creede, not just because the high street is little changed from the 1920s, but because the locals, including the sheriff and the council, were fully supportive of our concept. To a man, the town folk of Creede were committed to helping us bring the project to fruition. For two days, our crew and extras seemingly doubled the winter population of Creede and the one restaurant in town was at capacity most of the time.

Fine tuning the composition was a challenge as ideally, I wanted Bonnie - played by Cara Delevingne - to be as big a part of the image as possible, but I also needed the buildings on both sides of the street to frame the narrative in the middle. We had not dragged everyone up to this cold final frontier outpost to create a mundane image.

My goal was to create one single vignette to emphatically celebrate the heavily mythologised story of Bonnie and Clyde. We had worked with him before and knew that his instinctive reaction and control of the river boat were of Olympic standard. Without his skill we would never have had the bear in this position with the mountain range behind.

The pebble beach above the river bank offered a wonderful stage for the bear to visually “pop” against a stunning backdrop, but we had to get there in seconds and Connor achieved this with grace and precision. Their daily routine would not have been compromised by drunken fights, troublesome prostitutes, crippling snowstorms or even the occasional shoot out. They are the most dangerous and revered lineage of fighting bulls in the world. It was not an assignment for the timid, as the behind-the-scenes footage shows. Most of my photographs of this bull failed to convey the immediate sense of threat as this emotion is only evoked by a head on charge, which tends to be challenging to photograph. Most crucially, I needed to win the support of the owners Gaetano and Mario Gargiulo. Although the storm cleared through the night, it was still unseasonably cold and when we arrived at the top of the sand dunes at dawn, the distant mountains were enveloped in low cloud. This is most unusual and added a whole new element to what I already knew was a visually intoxicating location. The other problem I have, is that when the camera is head on to a subject, there is always a decision to be taken as to whether to focus on the mouth or the eyes. It’s a dilemma for me because my default position is to have the eyes in focus and make sure that the nearest feature to the camera is not so out of the focal plane as to create a tension point. On a clear sunny day, it would have been a decent image, but it is the falling snow and the flat light that deliver the needed mood and the sense of place.

I have been deliberating about photographing a Siberian tiger in the habitat that defines it for several years, but North China - where I took this image – had, until recently, been out of bounds for foreigners since Covid. It’s a long way from home, English tongues are rare and, in the winter, it can offer indecently low temperatures.

I recognised that I would need to allocate a good amount of time in the north to wait for the snowfall. Siberian winters are extremely cold, but it does not snow that often. There are many hours spent killing time in a hotel room but the accommodation is much more comfortable than it used to be. It is such a long way from home and there is little merit planning for a three-day visit anyway. My team knows who they are and their stature within China, but no one else needs to know.

The question that I will be asked about this picture will simply be “how on earth did you get it?”. My answer would be two-fold. I was in a bespoke vehicle with a lower window opening, smaller than a tiger’s head, but larger than a camera lens. The second part of the answer is more important: it was by showing China and the Chinese some respect. Without that there was no chance. I know some people will criticise me for working with a country with a questionable record in conservation, but life is too short and I am an artist first and foremost.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0274/0553/files/yarrow_david_433_Snowcat_132x178_9a8dc7b6-c139-4c45-af50-c8f36ec1058c.jpg?v=1785201374
david-yarrow-the-last-supper-in-fort-worth
The Last Supper in Fort Worth
The Last Supper in Fort Worth
Fort Worth, Texas, USA - 2024

For a stretch of road to own a place in the visual jigsaw of Americana, it must have history as well as aesthetic power. This is true in financial trading, sports scores and facets of everyday life.

Taleb argued that the truth was different and the random walk of luck spreads itself evenly throughout life and some achievements are, in fact, totally a result of good fortune: we just find it affirming to think otherwise.

I took this picture in Kalimantan, Borneo one afternoon in late April 2024 and it certainly outscores any previous pictures I have taken of orangutans. I saw the possibility slowly unfolding in front of me, but whether there would be that one moment in time, when everything was symmetrically aligned, was really just down to good fortune. I had that one glimpse and took it. It’s luck, but having said that, I won’t take it back.

I want to thank the senior park rangers in Kalimantan who granted me permits and guided me up river to a particular bend where they knew there tended to be several orangutans. Shit happened here.

But there is also an untamed regality to the region that has long drawn filmmakers and, of course, this goes full circle, as this remote part of the world has long been associated with the Fleming family and particularly Ian Fleming - the creator of James Bond. He lived here before moving to Jamaica in 1946.

A pivotal sequence in the 2012 Bond movie “Skyfall” was shot on the road down from the A82 to what was Ian Fleming’s nephew’s shooting lodge - Dalness. I doubt any other Bond location has as many daily visitors as that Glen Etive Road.

This panoramic was taken near the entrance to that road on the West Highland Way. Time will tell, but my early sense is that it could become one of the most coveted pictures of my career. There is an old platitude that the best photographs tend to unfold when good stuff is in front of the lens and this single frame endorses that principle.

The true essence of being a team is played out against the most emphatic sense of place conceivable. There was no Plan B.

Above that, I feel the investment and thought that went into the dressing of the players, the captain and vice captains and caddies paid great dividends.
