I am clearly not alone in considering the view south from turnoff 13 on the way to Mexican Hat to be one of the most visually intoxicating sights in the Us. It was, of course, used in Forrest Gump and then provided the front cover to Ridley Scott’s Thelma and Louise. The Us has taken ownership of the term “road trip” as explained succinctly by this stretch of tarmac. It's truly an iconic and timeless vista that shouts “The Wild West”.

Gladiator is probably Ridley Scott's finest movie and I have watched it over and over again. Meanwhile, Thelma and Louise is rightly one of the most lauded road trip movies of all time. About a month ago, I picked up the Dvd box and had a moment of inspiration. Their use of the convertible car and the head on angle offered a totally different perspective on Monument Valley.

Taking my pre-conception through to reality that Wednesday morning was no small task. I want to thank Brawler Productions in La for collaborating with me and helping secure exclusive use of the road at the key time, around 7.40 am. It's a busy road and the Utah State Police were fantastic. Josie Canseco played her role brilliantly - it was not easy to look that glamorous and in charge with a wolf sitting in Thelma’s seat. It is no surprise that Victoria’s Secret has booked her for its latest show in Nyc.

We arrived on site two days before the shoot as we wanted to be in control of everything within our control. I can’t remember ever pondering more over camera settings and lenses. I kNew I would have a generous amount of light to play with at 7.40 and we had to use it well. The big variable was the wolf’s behaviour - the light gets too harsh from about 8am and therefore there was only a small window to get the job wrapped. It was tight, but we did it. All in all, it was a great team effort in a fairly remote part of the American West.

When we showed this picture for the first time in late September the reaction was huge. The grandeur of the place is intoxicating - it is an artist’s dream and it pays to take one’s time.

Access to this particular look out point on the Utah side required consent from the Navajo Indians, but the red tape is worth it because it offers the quintessential Wild West view. I have worked with this wolf - Crocket - before and he can be quite chilled, but getting them to face each other - as if in a deep and intense conversation was a tough brief for Crocket’s handler. Then again all we needed for the killer vignette was one second of luck and eventually, as the light started to fade, we got it.

Josie is a world class Victoria’s Secret model and it shows. It just sounds like a place with an interesting past. As it is, this modest community of 600 to the west of Livingston in Montana, is a little run down and sleepy. It is nestled between the Crazies mountain range to the north and Yellowstone to the south and most people simply pass it by.

However, in trawling the internet, we discovered a saloon bar in the high street with neon signage on the facade that caught my interest. We visited the location and there was certainly potential, but clearly the shot would have to take place at night.

There was then an immediate problem, as we discovered that the bar was the central congregation point for all the mountain men - not just from Big Timber, but from far and wide. To bring a wolf and a Victoria’s Secret model to the entrance and shoot when the bar was open, was simple asking for trouble.

The only viable option was immediately obvious - to shoot at 5 am, when hopefully most of the clientele had had enough, though in Montana, one can never be sure. Chicago
is the home of the mobster, and I was determined to capture the mood of Al Capone and the Prohibition era in a single frame. To my mind, this demanded a location that could substantiate the narrative. I homed in on the old neighborhood in Chicago where thousands of Italians used to live in the 1920s and 1930s. Around 24th Street and Oakley Avenue, it was a tight-knit community with roots in Tuscan towns such as Lucca.

On an intersection on 24th Street there is a well-known Italian restaurant, Bruna’s, which was around at the time
of Capone. However, the delay gave me time to consider various options for the story line and fine tune logistics. The unanimous choice for round two was to shoot the boat scene with the Fbi agents. For many it is the most memorable scene in the whole movie and of course there is intense competition for that top spot.

In May of this year we had an opportunity to shoot our sequel off the coast of Marina del Rey in Los Angeles. I had so much more light to play with than in the dealing room shot and my instinct was to be bold in the amount of content I could include in one frame. This is one of the challenges of still photography.

Once we sourced our necessarily large yacht, I pondered intensely over the make up of the content and the composition of that content. The wolf would always be the centre stage, but the layered nature of the front of the boat offered my best chance of an expansive narrative around and behind the wolf. My favoured shooting time was an hour before sunset and from mid afternoon I had built up an intricate story board in my mind.

About 6.45pm out on the open sea, all the constituent parts came together and I think everyone involved should be proud of the role they played in creating the parody. I would contend that if any one of the constituents of the photograph was removed, the picture would be materially lessened. It needed the giant lobsters; the spray of the champagne; the Fbi; the helicopter; both wolves and even the girl on the top deck. Luckily they were all on board - this was not a day to have after thoughts.

They say that the best pictures can be looked at for a long time. Well here we go.

Indeed, I had to work on the basis that the one frame had to tell the full story, otherwise the job would not have been done properly.

Every inch of the frame sweats and every person within the frame firmly stakes claim to his or her presence. I was greedy in the amount of information I wanted in the picture and for it to come off, I needed luck as well as strong communication with everyone on set. It has the cinematic feel that I often strive for and I think in time I will look back very fondly on that evening. At the moment it is all a little fresh and the subject matter is sufficiently adrift from my normal work that it is difficult to find context. But my sense is that it is a special photograph.

The goal was to attain compositional harmony amidst the chaos of the beach landing, which was not that easy an objective as this landing was for real. This raw and rocky coastline in Anguilla is no studio. In retrospect it is remarkable that not only are the faces of the six male pirates in the landing party all in view but they also show collective endeavour. They had enough to think about dealing with the boat in the tide and maybe the truth is that they weren’t in role at all.

Whilst getting soaked, out of my right eye I was checking the barrel in the sea, as I didn’t want to lose it behind the boat. There was quite a bit of multi-tasking going on in that one minute. Keeping a watch on two Rastafarian friends on the rocks was a further dimension. It was quite late in the day and by that time, I couldn't be too sure of their footing given their industrial consumption of weed during the day.

Josie Canseco is made for shots like this. The more attitude she has, the more striking her appearance, and that’s why I cast her more in bad ass roles than necessarily beauty roles. In this series I wanted women to play more of a lead than is traditional in most pirate narratives. Most pirate productions are too male led.

I think most of us have a secret love for the pirate; there is something visceral about a life lived out-with the law. In celebrated American resort destinations such as Aspen, they can outnumber grounded commercial aircraft 20 to 1. Flying privately makes travel comfortable and appeals to those long of cash and short of time, but to film in a private jet and merely tell a story of luxury, has always struck me as banal and creatively stiff.

Instead, I wanted to use the tube of a private jet to tell a story of excess and bad behaviour; if jets are private, then by definition anything is permissible and the word Pj can elicit imagery of sex, drugs and rock and roll. It is not, of course, a linear relationship and most passengers on private jets are model citizens simply travelling in the most perfunctory of ways from A to B. My focus was the Pj journeys that get out of hand.

The real Wolf of Wall Street - Jordan Belfort - was not shy of excess and I persuaded him that we could build a frame around some of the infamous moments from the movie and host that aggregation in a Pj. Based on the novel with the same name by Walter Tevis (1959), it tells the story full of ups and downs of the talented “Fast” Eddie Felson (Paul Newman) and his encounters with the legendary Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason). In the movie, players were always heavy gamblers, smokers and drinkers which contributed to the “bad boy” image of pool. Directed by Tony Scott, it cost just $15 million to make and has now grossed over $350m. That is why every year hundreds of thousands of tourists stand where I knelt to take a picture. Like the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley, it is a ground zero for selfies and maybe the location deserves a little better. It should elicit not just our phone’s attention, but a deep respect for Americana and the Final Frontier. The fact that a 150 years ago a village was built up here at 9,000 feet in Box Canyon is a telling insight into the determination of the first settlers.

I have filmed on Main Street a few times, but never with a car and I sensed that there could be potential to tell a period story. If that was not greedy enough, I needed my wolf - Klondike. I wanted parody as well as glamour.

Closing down that street is not easy and I am hugely appreciative of the Mayor of Telluride - Teddy Errico - and his staff for their support on 14th December 2024. The early morning temperature, on that one morning when we were permitted to close the street and bring in my cast, led by the beautiful Josie Canseco, turned out to be the coldest of the winter so far and that changed every visual dynamic. At dawn it was only about 10 °F and the extreme cold amplified the heavy exhaust fumes from the 1955 Austin Healey.
