{"title":"David Yarrow - Exhibition St. Moritz Summer 2026","description":null,"products":[{"product_id":"david-yarrow-the-untouchables-2","title":"The Untouchables 2","description":"THE UNTOUCHABLES\u003cbr\u003e Amboseli, Kenya - 2017\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I take most of my elephant images in Amboseli for three reasons, all of which helped make this image work. The first\u2028is that the flat and arid topography of the park—and particularly of the dry lake outside it—lends itself not only to clean backdrops, but also to good predictive analysis of elephant movement. The second is that I can get out and about and set up remotes without infringing upon any laws or endangering myself. Third, the elephants in Amboseli, just like in Tsavo, can be very big. I really don’t look outside of Kenya for elephants; it is the home of the big tuskers.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This was one of my most coveted images in 2017, and the limited-edition prints of it sold out within a year.\u2028That sort of demand always suggests a special image. I want to take pictures that stop people in their tracks. An American friend of mine in the fashion industry refers to it as a “Kennedy Dead” photograph or headline. This is a “Kennedy Dead” photograph.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In truth, it is a lucky shot on the widest-angle lens I have—the 20mm. The subject needs to be close, otherwise it\u2028will always be “loose,” and this requires a great deal of predictive analysis and good fortune. I am clearly not with the camera!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The composition is an act of god,\u2028but I am willing to take it—the frame within the frame. The big bull had to block the late-afternoon sun or there was no picture. He kindly did that, which allowed the lighting to be energetic and dramatic. A group of male bison charging through heavy snow, directly towards a camera is certainly a rare sight and it always seemed a bridge too far from almost every perspective. The question has always been where and how could this epic scene unfold in front of a camera?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Yellowstone National Park was never going to be the answer.  This sort of collective behaviour does not tend to happen in the park and if it did, there would be zero chance of being in the right place at the right time to film it. It is difficult to break new ground in Yellowstone.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In 2020 an American artist, John Banovich, an exceptional talent and good friend, suggested that I approach Ted Turner to see if I could gain access to his stunning 180 square mile ranch - Flying D - saddling Yellowstone and neighbouring Big Sky. This remarkable place is nine times the size of Manhattan and showcases Montana at its most stunning best.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e John’s wonderful painting of a group of running bison adorns the wall of the main reception of the exclusive Yellowstone Club and he took his inspiration from spending time at Ted Turner’s ranch.  I recognised that this was a link worth pursuing. Flatteringly, a few months after my initial approach, the Turner team agreed to collaborate in the hope that we could raise money for Ted’s conservation initiatives.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Ted Turner is one of America’s biggest landowners and also one of its most acclaimed conservationists and he reintroduced both bison and wolves into Flying D, one of his three Montana ranches. In mid-winter, his team of ranchers will herd some of the 5,000-resident bison into areas where feeding is easier and this controlled activity creates an opportunity to work a situation.  Just like cowboys herding their cattle in Texas, the skill sets of the Turner ranchers in deep snow are a privilege to watch.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The difficulty is that bison in this vast ranch are more skittish of humans on foot than their Yellowstone cousins, who see thousands of tourists every day.   I therefore needed either to be camouflaged or out of sight as they made haste in my direction. Luckily the Flying D team knew of a group of rocks behind which I would be obscured from the bison’s line of sight.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e After many a failure, and some adjustments to the approach, one gorgeous winter morning in February, we achieved what we set out to do. Our cognitive processing tends to elicit visual symbolisms that are consensual - mention the word “Nevada” and we think of gambling in a desert.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut Florida is more complicated. It cannot be conveniently categorised or boxed. On the coast is Miami, with its tourist beaches, Art Deco, influencers, pop culture and Hispanic soul. Then up the road is Palm Beach with its genteel “Slim Aarons” high-society life of golf, tennis, bridge and cocktails.\nThe two communities could not be more different in culture and ethnicity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThey only have two things in common: favourable taxes and proximity to America’s Jurassic Park - an untamed territory that remains primeval and largely closed for business. The swamps of Florida were not made for human life, yet they sit within 30 miles of two of the most evolved and desirable places to live in the world. It is as stark a visual dislocation as there can be.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn no part of America does the price of real estate fall quicker than when travelling west from the Atlantic beaches of southern Florida. There are too many insects and far too many dangerous reptiles for sane mankind.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe emblematic beast of Florida is the alligator and for the 56,000 students at the University of Florida, life would be different if “Gators” did not exist. The big gators in the swamps are formidable adversaries.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis photograph was only captured after considerable research and conversations with those familiar with the location. The camera was controlled remotely, and no one was in danger during this project. Alligators are much more comfortable living in this part of Florida than humans will ever be.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIf Florida was fictional, we would laugh at its absurdity. Those with a visual sensibility have been drawn to this part of the world for 600 years.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy sole focus was achieving compositional balance and making sure I married the horse to the backdrop in the right size ratio. If there was a complexity, it was the tradeoff between proximity to the running stallion and my own personal safety. But his Roman trainer was so in control, I had no concerns.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eGladiator (2000) was nominated for 12 Oscars and won five. For many it remains a generational film and every day, tourists come to the Val d’Orcia pocket of Tuscany to have their little Russell Crowe fix. It was Crowe’s finest hour and meanwhile the cinematography team, led by John Mathieson, offered viewers a masterclass in the use of light.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLocation scouting is a key part of Ridley Scott’s formidable tool kit and the Val d’Orcia scenes in Gladiator stood out as much as any. There was little CGI in play here - what one saw on screen is what was there in reality - hence the appeal to tourists. It was one of my earliest photographs good enough for others to see and I will always cherish it. I took it in Mexico City in 1986 - a city and a year closely associated with Maradona. It was a World Cup that will always be remembered and remembered because of him.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHe dominated his stage with a zest and skill level that perhaps only his fellow Argentinian Lionel Messi has ever matched. I feel very fortunate to have photographed both sporting icons.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 1986 there was no autofocus and the cameraman had to move the focus manually - not an easy trick in such moments. But my position in this group game against Bulgaria was a stroke of luck and I took the opportunity. It was the start of a long journey.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMaradona was so dominant in all his matches that my camera struggled to focus on any other player. I don’t think I have ever been to a bar in the world that gives a more emphatic nod to the working community it serves. This is codependency working at a real estate level as opposed to a personal one.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOf course, there are bars in lower Manhattan that cater to Wall Street types and bars in northern Massachusetts that cater to commercial fishermen, but I can’t imagine that the decor on show will have the archival breadth that is on offer here. It is a museum to the history of oil in Texas with the occasional nod to the state’s love of sport. This is the hydrocarbon capital of the world and the walls most certainly talk.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe recipe for success here is not highbrow or noteworthy; no one is splitting the atom at “The Bar” in terms of culinary refinement or cocktail mixology. But the owners are friendly, the service is quick and big contracts are agreed on handshakes over lunches that cost less than a barrel of oil.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIf local patrons arrive smelling of Christian Dior, they will leave smelling slightly more of crude oil. There is nowhere Greta Thunberg would less like to spend an afternoon than The Bar, and I suspect that everyone in Midland is delighted about that.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLike any good bar in Texas, we needed a cowboy and a horse and then some reference to college football. The reach and influence of the University of Texas is palpable everywhere in the state. This august educational establishment is central to what makes Texas so special. Every May it serves as the spiritual home of the town's film festival, which has only enhanced its status as a celebrity magnet. It is easier to name the film stars who haven't stayed there than those who have. There is a priceless heritage to the Carlton and the spell it casts over visitors remains fully intact.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBuilt between 1911 and 1913 the hotel plays to the lore of the region. The twin cupolas are probably its most iconic feature; legend has it they were inspired by the breasts of the most sought-after courtesan in Europe at the time, Carolina “La Belle” Otero.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe hotel's massive facade is a generous backdrop for filming, and my goal was simply to pay homage to the hedonism, glamour and opulence of the French Riviera. There is zest for life and an appetite for indulgence.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI brought the Sach's family's Riva Aquarama – Dracula – into the foreground. It was, of course, Gunter Sachs who famously courted and then married Brigitte Bardot in the late ‘60s. They were one of the most photographed couples of the era – the ultimate embodiment of 1960s Riviera glamour. Dracula was just one of the many playboy toys Gunter brought to the region.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere is a timeless aesthetic to this photograph and that was my intent. There are only a few clues as to whether it was taken last week, 10 years ago or 40 years ago. The frame is a carefully composed “smorgasbord” of all things Italian - the architecture, the trades, the brands and, of course, the people.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWith its 7,600 kilometers of coastline, Italy has long been a maritime country and I am drawn to idyllic coastal communities like Portofino. It’s taken me 30 odd years, but in crocodile years that is nothing. These monsters were around long before man and can live to 100 years old.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nBig crocs are not easy to capture in a way that conveys their enormity, their primeval menace or indeed their textural magnificence. But this image works and when I saw it in large size at the printers in La, my heart skipped a beat. It has been worth the wait. I think we pushed a few boundaries here.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe picture was made as opposed to taken as I had a preconceived idea of what I was trying to do. The starting point was my acceptance that head on images of crocodiles struggle as there is never enough depth of field with a telephoto to do them justice. The teeth can be in focus, but then probably not their eyes and certainly not their back or tail. I don't like to have my focal point half way back in an image - it creates a tension point if the nearest point of a portrait is out of focus. A head on portrait fails to convey length and length is the key variable.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI kNew I needed to work at 90 degrees, with the croc perpendicular to the camera. I also wanted to be low and close and I wanted a big crocodile - why on earth photograph a small one? If almost all of the crocodile was the same distance from the camera, there could be a colossal amount of information in the image.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nOur research - and we did a great deal - led us to one place. The key was that the river had to be narrow, as for safety reasons I could not work from the same bank as a 12 foot crocodile - that could be my last assignment. The narrow Grumeti river in Tanzania offers chances and there is one 200-yard section with some enormous crocs on the south bank with a north bank just 20 yards away. The steep bank deters crocodiles on the north bank and that was what I needed to be able to work without fear and for the camera angle to be low. I needed to be at the same height as the croc - give or take a meter.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe image was taken late in the day and the angle of the late sun gave me every chance for a clean picture - almost all the background was in heavy shadow and three stops underexposed.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \n\nMy preoccupation as an artist is to be original and creative. We often fail and disappoint ourselves, but this photograph is kind of cool. I haven't really seen a similar image and we do put in the hours trawling the net. I had the right camera, the right lens and the right exposure. Phew!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThis scene could well have happened 10,000 Bc - but we will never know. It’s an occupational hazard of being on the road in the company we keep. But we do say that we are exhaustive in our research.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e We tend to look for one transcending feature in a bar and on this occasion, in the legendary cowboy town of Miles City in eastern Montana, we found a 100-year 18ft tall oak Brunswick back bar. It would not have looked out of place in the smartest dining clubs of the early days of Wall Street. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The owner of the Montana bar was more than open to a film crew coming to his bar on a wintry Sunday, but given Covid restrictions we had to think smart in the execution.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e There are many parts to this vignette.  All are needed as I really wanted the room to be full of characters without losing the detail of the bar. After all, that was the reason we were there. The composition therefore needed to be very precise and all the talent had to listen acutely to directions - which in a couple of cases was a big ask.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e But we got there in the end I think.  Everyone did a grand job, including the four-legged poker player with the killer hand. Kevin is comfortable walking with most of the lions under his care, but Gandalf is not one of them. His relationship with every lion is different and I suspect that Gandalf has been one of his biggest challenges.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNevertheless, I wanted to take a tight portrait of Gandalf - where my eyes were exactly at his eye level. Clearly this was not going to be simple as I needed to be close, but I also needed to be safe.  Kevin and I worked on an approach that involved shooting through an improvised latch in one of his maximum-security fences. The latch was necessarily smaller than Gandalf’s head, but positioned at the same height as his head - should he be standing.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe first time we tried this approach in the late afternoon, Gandalf was preoccupied by other things in his considerable acreage and when he eventually approached us, the evening light was uneven across his face, which distracted from the detail. There was no shot.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut that night at camp, when I looked at the photographs I had taken, I realised the great potential of the idea - Gandalf looked like a mythological beast and he had so much mane that I knew I could fill the frame from about eight feet with no more than a 105mm lens. That was crucial as I wanted to avoid magnification - it kills a portrait.  He was like something out of a fairytale - all battle scared and white - the most fearsome cat I had ever seen.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe agreed that the best time to work would be just before full sunrise - there would be enough light to have the depth of field I needed, but the light would also be flat and even - which I also needed. Moreover, Kevin thought Gandalf would be slightly more cooperative first thing in the morning.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAnd so it was that we had our moment at around 6.45 am. Thanks to Kevin’s extraordinary ability to work lions, Gandalf positioned himself in the one place that my idea could succeed and then he stood and stared me down. It is optically outstanding and the definition and detail in this portrait showcase its operation capability.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe premise of this idea came when location scouting with Kevin Richardson at his sanctuary. There is a small river that runs through his land and in a few places deeper pools develop. I knew that if we could place a cage in a deep pool, I could then shoot standing from the cage and in effect be at eye level with the lion should it come for a drink at a preferred drinking spot.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere are all sort of things in the water that can get into the cage - like water snakes - and I have certainly had more relaxing afternoons. The water was so muddy that it was impossible to see what might be brushing against a leg. But luckily, I am here to tell the tale.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis male lion is a white lion - he has a mythological look - something pulled out of a fairytale (hence the title of the image).  The eyes in the photograph are pivotal - he is right on me and has a look of clear intent. Our eye is grabbed and then it is a little difficult to look anywhere else. Kevin and I have worked with each other for six years and there is great mutual trust. His team worked on the cage placement deep in a flooded gorge during the heat of the day and I then had the easy task of just getting wet from 4pm onwards. I knew that I wanted a contextual backdrop and I also knew that I needed to work with consistently flat light on Vayetse's face. The key was to convey a sense of place, but also take a portrait with an intoxicating level of facial detail.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe busy river background is not maybe my normal style, but in this case it helped - after all, I am in his “Kingdom”, not a studio. As always, my starting premise was that I needed to be lower than his line of sight - this meant being in four feet of water. The Nikkor 58mm lens is optically in a league of its own for this kind of work and I think it shows here.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI hope that this photograph will find good homes and in so doing raise awareness and also funds for Kevin’s relentless crusade to fight for the survival of the Kings of Africa. I had the easy job, albeit the wet one. Stories and art throughout the Middle East show the lion representing great kings and as their companions. Chinese culture portrays the lion as a creature of great majesty safeguarding humans from ghosts and demons.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAlthough the lion is mostly represented as a noble, fearless and sometimes ferocious beast, we see depictions of a softer side too. In the story of Androcles and the Lion, Androcles removes a thorn from a lion’s paw, and in return the lion spares his life at the Circus Maximus in front of the Emperor.There is only one lion that I know to perfectly depict this balance of ferocity and emotion. That lion is Vayetse. His name meaning; ‘and he left’ in Hebrew. Vayetse, now eight and a half years old, lost his brother to a snake bite when he was just over one. He mourned for weeks until we had to intervene and found some lionesses for him to live with. Throughout his life, he has been the perfect balance between being authoritative enough to be respected, but gentle enough to be loved and adored.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere is only one photographer I know who could capture this balance, his name, David Yarrow. David’s images serve as great conversation pieces throughout the world. If you don’t believe that these pictures speak, I challenge you to go and view one up close. But even for this talented Scotsman from Glasgow, this was a big ask.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe discussed what we were trying to achieve and how on earth we were going to achieve it. Ultimately it was decided that an explosive running shot would be best. It would be shot at a low angle with nothing else in the frame to distract our eye. The lion would need to be running at camera and although David is a genius with his remote control work, he decided to operate the camera himself, which naturally added to the complexity of achieving this shot. It took a good two days to come up with this image. I’ve seen almost every picture there is of a lion running but I don’t think there is a picture of this calibre out there.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis photograph immortalizes Vayetse and it symbolizes what a lion is about. The essence of his being is captured by this one frame. One millisecond too early, or too late, and this shot would not have worked. An image of explosive power and focus is extremely difficult to achieve but we weren’t trying to get a nice safe picture of a lion. She was as much a mythological beast as she was a modern day cat. It struck me that we needed to build the narrative around the fact that she was so white. Nothing else really mattered – she should look haunting and ethereal.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI could be nowhere near the camera when we worked this image – these lions are dangerous and big. I operated the remote from at least 60 yards away, but I prefocused precisely on the ridge as I wanted no context other than the fluffy white clouds. Stories and art throughout the Middle East show the lion representing great kings and as their companions. Chinese culture portrays the lion as a creature of great majesty safeguarding humans from ghosts and demons.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAlthough the lion is mostly represented as a noble, fearless and sometimes ferocious beast, we see depictions of a softer side too. In the story of Androcles and the Lion, Androcles removes a thorn from a lion’s paw, and in return the lion spares his life at the Circus Maximus in front of the Emperor.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere is only one lion that I know to perfectly depict this balance of ferocity and emotion. That lion is Vayetse. His name meaning; ‘and he left’ in Hebrew. Vayetse, now eight and a half years old, lost his brother to a snake bite when he was just over one. He mourned for weeks until we had to intervene and found some lionesses for him to live with. Throughout his life, he has been the perfect balance between being authoritative enough to be respected, but gentle enough to be loved and adored.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere is only one photographer I know who could capture this balance, his name, David Yarrow. David’s images serve as great conversation pieces throughout the world. If you don’t believe that these pictures speak, I challenge you to go and view one up close. But even for this talented Scotsman from Glasgow, this was a big ask.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe discussed what we were trying to achieve and how on earth we were going to achieve it. Ultimately it was decided that an explosive running shot would be best. It would be shot at a low angle with nothing else in the frame to distract our eye. The lion would need to be running at camera and although David is a genius with his remote control work, he decided to operate the camera himself, which naturally added to the complexity of achieving this shot. It took a good two days to come up with this image. I’ve seen almost every picture there is of a lion running but I don’t think there is a picture of this calibre out there.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis photograph immortalizes Vayetse and it symbolizes what a lion is about. The essence of his being is captured by this one frame. One millisecond too early, or too late, and this shot would not have worked. An image of explosive power and focus is extremely difficult to achieve but we weren’t trying to get a nice safe picture of a lion. Image grain and noise rose quickly after the sun set and equally waking long before dawn seemed like a waste of a decent sleep.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut in 2017, the best digital cameras became generous in tough light and flagship Dslr cameras could work well before dawn and after dusk. Technical advance has essentially added an hour on to the working day. These new minutes can make for evocative and powerful imagery simply because the light is so unusual.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis image of a hunting lion was taken as I was on my way back to camp in Lewa Downs, I had actually packed up for the night. I am sure that those who know Lewa will recognise the hills in the background – there is a great sense of place in this image.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy metadata suggests the photograph was taken as late as 6.47 pm and conveying the intent and purpose of this stunning lion was therefore a technical compromise. The encounter happened with no warning and I needed to be quick to get low in the grass and also get the right lens – the light was falling every 20 seconds. My limit would normally be working from 3ft with a 35mm wide angle. In my experience, a good rule of thumb is that the minimum focal distance in feet should – in 75% of circumstances – be a tenth to a fifteenth of the numerical lens specification and then the maximum should be double that. For instance, I would not normally tend to use a 85mm lens at a range of 6ft or less and equally why use a 35mm at more than 6ft? So if there is the possibility of exploring focal distance at 1.5ft without a fisheye lens, the 20mm lens has a chance and the Nikon 20mm F1.4m is an outstanding lens. It gives contextual detail with comfortable “bokey” and it gives portrait detail with eye grabbing clarity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIf that is all a bit technical, I apologise but photography is rarely not about maths. Of course it is about emotional employment and personal soul, but Ansel Adams was a mathematician first. Practitioners should understand how light enters the camera and also how lenses work.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOn social media, “The Hunger Games” quickly became our most loved image. Followers talk about my implicit bravery and stupidity, but they are wrong. It is a picture about access first, then maths and experience. I was no cavalier hero. The Revenant was mostly shot by “Chivo” using the same mathematical proximity rules and it won him an Oscar.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHere is the story. I am in a bespoke cage in Transvaal, South Africa. The beautiful lioness emerges from the high grass and is immediately inquisitive of me and my smell. She peers through the gap that is my shooting window in the cage, but she can’t get at me. It a perfect chance to take a portrait of a lioness in her natural environment – just as my fellow Scot – Albert Watson – would photograph a model in New York.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOf course her nose was too close to be truly sharp – there is no depth of field at that 1.5ft range. But everything else in her face offers detail never perhaps previously seen with such clarity. Gary Player’s adage that ‘the harder I practice, the luckier I seem to get’ carries a great deal of resonance every time I look at this photograph. How appropriate it was therefore that I took this image just 32 hours after celebrating Gary’s 80th birthday in Sun City, South Africa. We have become good friends over the years and I am full of admiration for his passion and commitment to the pursuit of excellence. In my lower profile world, this image of an adult male lion is as good as I can do, but by practicing and getting it wrong, I found a way to finally get it right. It is a lucky shot, but maybe I earned it. For one thing, I have never returned from a shoot dirtier or smellier in my life.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe African lion population may have fallen by 90% over the last 100 years but there are still enough of them around in Botswana and South Africa in particular, for their behaviour to be well documented by photographers. It is not like capturing imagery of a snow leopard – seek and you will find. However, an encounter with a lion where the human party is sitting 80 yards away in a jeep is hardly groundbreaking work. Telephoto images of this encounter tend to be sterile, generic and fairly dull. There is no sense of the animal’s soul because everything is too distant – no one takes a portrait of a beautiful woman from a jeep 80 yards away and why should that therefore work with a wild animal? Proximity and no magnification contribute character and power to any portrait.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs Ansel Adams taught us, ‘the lens looks both ways’ and he understood that a standard or marginally wide angle lens offered the best conduit for offering some degree of spiritual immersion. The 35mm lens is indeed by far my favourite portrait lens, but very few photographers even consider using this in wildlife portraiture – it is totally counter intuitive – especially with predators such as big cats. It is good to break rules and approach one’s work at 180 degrees to what is considered the norm – what is the point of being part of the crowd?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy approach – as many know – leans on the use of desk research, analysis, field support from the very best and then the employment of remote controls. On location I will often stand in a cage and leave the camera some 50 yards from me, to do the work. It is the opposite of a zoo – the lion is in the wild and I am in the cage. Many that know me might joke that it is not before time that I am caged, but this is not normal photography. However, it is my way and over the years, I have refined it again and again. Nevertheless the success rate is very low – it is not a job for those that require a diet of immediate and relentless gratification. If it were that easy there would be a few other images like ‘Gold’ knocking around.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eKevin Richardson is an icon in South Africa – much like Gary Player, albeit not in sport but conservation – like indeed Gary’s late brother Ian. The rhinoceros was Ian Player’s field of practice, whilst Kevin is the Lion Whisperer. I have worked with Kev for sometime now and we have built up a great mutual respect and friendship. To watch him work with lions in the same way that George Adamson did in Karo, Kenya all those years ago is quite astonishing. His talent is unique and quite remarkable. Kev works with very few photographers and I hope that continues to be the case – his huge fan club across the world suggest that there are no awareness issues here. Lions are dangerous to all but him and I have always worked rigidly within what he regards as safe – he has a responsibility and so indeed do I.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe work together now on a number of conservation fronts, but the most immediate goal is to put pressure on the legality of the practice of canned hunting of lions in South Africa. This medieval and dark practice is protected by the wealth of some South Africans who will fight to protect their profitable trade with trophy hunters. But in time, it will be banned and I am sure Kevin will be instrumental in this progression. Our legacy of our time on this planet does not currently look that great, but this would constitute a small victory.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e‘Gold’ was my last picture of 2015 and perhaps it is also the most impactful I have taken in the year. The focus around the lion’s eyes is pin sharp and that lends huge power to the image. Without that precision, it would not be the big picture that people assure me that it most certainly is. In Lewa – where this picture was taken – there are only a couple of lion prides and they are often not spotted for days.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis lion had just killed and eaten and his demeanour spanks of being both sated and content. But he is alert – his right eye is very telling and grabs our focus in the picture. It is imperative to me never to have an eyeline that suggests the cameraman is looking down on the lion. That implies human and vehicle encroachment rather than personal immersion. In this case, my eye is at the same level as his and this parity makes it a strong portrait.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe picture was taken just after 7 am. This timing generally offers the best light for lion shots on the equator and this image in a large format is a testimony to the validity of that rule. I was out of the jeep, hand holding my D4s with a fast 300mm lens, but the jeep car door was open behind me and I had a second or so to get in and close the door as the lion came towards me. Kevin was also at hand – but manifestly not directly between the lion and myself – the camera does not lie.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI don’t think a photographer should be closer than 10 yards to an incoming running lion and perhaps this was the “full nine yards”. I banged my knee and the lens in jumping back into the jeep, but the image – the last in the series before I jumped – is now with us forever. Kevin’s relationship with these lions is remarkably strong and had something gone wrong, I do believe he would have prevented me from being mauled. I trusted him implicitly and was able to focus entirely on the job in hand and hold the camera steady.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe fact that the shot is backlit adds to its emotion and power – the sun hitting the blades of grass reminds me of Ridley Scott’s opening shots in Gladiator. That photograph has now sold out and I was honoured that both Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese signed a copy which sold for $200,000 at Art Miami at the end of that year.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It was always our intention to do a sequel, but Covid put paid to that in 2020. However, the delay gave me time to consider various options for the story line and fine tune logistics. The unanimous choice for round two was to shoot the boat scene with the Fbi agents.  For many it is the most memorable scene in the whole movie and of course there is intense competition for that top spot.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In May of this year we had an opportunity to shoot our sequel off the coast of Marina del Rey in Los Angeles.  I had so much more light to play with than in the dealing room shot and my instinct was to be bold in the amount of content I could include in one frame.  Indeed, I had to work on the basis that the one frame had to tell the full story, otherwise the job would not have been done properly.  This is one of the challenges of still photography.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Once we sourced our necessarily large yacht, I pondered intensely over the make up of the content and the composition of that content. The wolf would always be the centre stage, but the layered nature of the front of the boat offered my best chance of an expansive narrative around and behind the wolf.  My favoured shooting time was an hour before sunset and from mid afternoon I had built up an intricate story board in my mind.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e About 6.45pm out on the open sea, all the constituent parts came together and I think everyone involved should be proud of the role they played in creating the parody. I would contend that if any one of the constituents of the photograph was removed, the picture would be materially lessened. It needed the giant lobsters; the spray of the champagne; the Fbi; the helicopter; both wolves and even the girl on the top deck.  Luckily they were all on board - this was not a day to have after thoughts.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e They say that the best pictures can be looked at for a long time. Well here we go. It is difficult to break new ground in Yellowstone.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In 2020 an American artist, John Banovich, an exceptional talent and good friend, suggested that I approach Ted Turner to see if I could gain access to his stunning 180 square mile ranch - Flying D - saddling Yellowstone and neighbouring Big Sky. This remarkable place is nine times the size of Manhattan and showcases Montana at its most stunning best.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e John’s wonderful painting of a group of running bison adorns the wall of the main reception of the exclusive Yellowstone Club and he took his inspiration from spending time at Ted Turner’s ranch.  I recognised that this was a link worth pursuing. Flatteringly, a few months after my initial approach, the Turner team agreed to collaborate in the hope that we could raise money for Ted’s conservation initiatives.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Ted Turner is one of America’s biggest landowners and also one of its most acclaimed conservationists and he reintroduced both bison and wolves into Flying D, one of his three Montana ranches. In mid-winter, his team of ranchers will herd some of the 5,000-resident bison into areas where feeding is easier and this controlled activity creates an opportunity to work a situation.  Just like cowboys herding their cattle in Texas, the skill sets of the Turner ranchers in deep snow are a privilege to watch.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The difficulty is that bison in this vast ranch are more skittish of humans on foot than their Yellowstone cousins, who see thousands of tourists every day.   I therefore needed either to be camouflaged or out of sight as they made haste in my direction. The difference between someone who can ride competently and a true working cowboy may ostensibly appear marginal, but in extreme conditions a chasm appears.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e To work a horse in -20 degrees, in two feet of fresh snow, whilst holding a weapon in one hand, appearing totally at ease, is a bridge too far for 99% of riders. So, on this set in Norwood, Colorado we knew we had to work with the best of the best. Ty Mitchell on the left is as authentic a Texan cowboy as they come and it is no surprise to us that he will soon be on set for three months with Martin Scorsese. I don’t think Scorsese will be disappointed with any aspect of Ty’s character. It will not be Ty’s first rodeo, Anthony Bourdain featured him when parts Unknown visited West Texas and Marfa.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e To his right, Michael Malone is a local rancher from Colorado and he immediately impressed us with his understated confidence and ability to play to a role. I fancy he could ride a horse sidesaddle whilst totally stoned and I sense such a challenge may have been put to the test once or twice. We welcomed him to the team with open arms.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In my mind, the key variable in this photograph is the light. On a sunny winter’s day, with snow on the ground, I believe the best light is actually in the first three or four minutes when the sun raises its head and touches the subject. 10 minutes after sunrise is too late as the sun is too harsh on the subject. In those initial minutes, the sun can be behind the camera and give the cameraman huge flexibility. For others, however, the Transcontinental Railroad undermined the sovereignty of Native nations and threatened to destroy Indigenous communities and their cultures as the railroad expanded into territories inhabited solely by Native Americans.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e As part of my photographic anthology on the wild west, it was always my intent to bring native Indians and a railroad together into an image, but I had no wish to objectify either party. A photograph for instance of a hostile railroad attack by a party of Indians could be labelled as stereotyping or indeed being blind to the provocation of what was effectively an invasion by American settlers, prospectors and capitalists. We entered this project to tell stories, not make overtly political points.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e After several scouting trips, I found an ideal location 10,000 feet above sea level on the track near Silverton, Colorado. Its scale provokes a sensory overload never diluted by familiarity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e John Ford and John Wayne went back time and time again because the landscape does much of the storytelling work for a director. It serves to elevate those who perform on the stage as the context is almost always one of heroic isolation.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e We got lucky with the light at the famous Forrest Gump Point that Monday morning. There was a window of about five minutes and the girls were so professional despite the chilling wind. Pictures like this make the job so rewarding and always remind me what a team effort it is. In particular, a big shout out to Nicole Allowitz; her styling is always so on point and was critical for the intended vibe on one of the most famous stretches of road in the world.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The title of the image is a borrow from Robert Earl Keen - the genius singer songwriter from Texas whom we sing along to whilst on the road in America. Without their support and advocacy, this idea could never have been executed. I have long been committed to the idea that the art of photography is as much about access as it is about the mechanics of a camera.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e My visual sensibility had long dictated that this had to be a winter shot: the bison is defined by its fortitude and the best natural props to make this association are snow and ice. We were fortunate with the cold weather early that morning, it added another layer to the story and gave the image a sense of season to accompany the necessary sense of place.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This is a well photographed street, but I just wonder whether this scene is unprecedented.
