The first\u2028is that the flat and arid topography of the park—and particularly of the dry lake outside it—lends itself not only to clean backdrops, but also to good predictive analysis of elephant movement. The second is that I can get out and about and set up remotes without infringing upon any laws or endangering myself. Third, the elephants in Amboseli, just like in Tsavo, can be very big. I really don’t look outside of Kenya for elephants; it is the home of the big tuskers.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This was one of my most coveted images in 2017, and the limited-edition prints of it sold out within a year.\u2028That sort of demand always suggests a special image. I want to take pictures that stop people in their tracks. An American friend of mine in the fashion industry refers to it as a “Kennedy Dead” photograph or headline. This is a “Kennedy Dead” photograph.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In truth, it is a lucky shot on the widest-angle lens I have—the 20mm. The subject needs to be close, otherwise it\u2028will always be “loose,” and this requires a great deal of predictive analysis and good fortune. I am clearly not with the camera!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The composition is an act of god,\u2028but I am willing to take it—the frame within the frame. The big bull had to block the late-afternoon sun or there was no picture. He kindly did that, which allowed the lighting to be energetic and dramatic. A group of male bison charging through heavy snow, directly towards a camera is certainly a rare sight and it always seemed a bridge too far from almost every perspective. The question has always been where and how could this epic scene unfold in front of a camera?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Yellowstone National Park was never going to be the answer.  This sort of collective behaviour does not tend to happen in the park and if it did, there would be zero chance of being in the right place at the right time to film it. It is difficult to break new ground in Yellowstone.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In 2020 an American artist, John Banovich, an exceptional talent and good friend, suggested that I approach Ted Turner to see if I could gain access to his stunning 180 square mile ranch - Flying D - saddling Yellowstone and neighbouring Big Sky. This remarkable place is nine times the size of Manhattan and showcases Montana at its most stunning best.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e John’s wonderful painting of a group of running bison adorns the wall of the main reception of the exclusive Yellowstone Club and he took his inspiration from spending time at Ted Turner’s ranch.  I recognised that this was a link worth pursuing. Flatteringly, a few months after my initial approach, the Turner team agreed to collaborate in the hope that we could raise money for Ted’s conservation initiatives.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Ted Turner is one of America’s biggest landowners and also one of its most acclaimed conservationists and he reintroduced both bison and wolves into Flying D, one of his three Montana ranches. In mid-winter, his team of ranchers will herd some of the 5,000-resident bison into areas where feeding is easier and this controlled activity creates an opportunity to work a situation.  Just like cowboys herding their cattle in Texas, the skill sets of the Turner ranchers in deep snow are a privilege to watch.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The difficulty is that bison in this vast ranch are more skittish of humans on foot than their Yellowstone cousins, who see thousands of tourists every day.   I therefore needed either to be camouflaged or out of sight as they made haste in my direction. Luckily the Flying D team knew of a group of rocks behind which I would be obscured from the bison’s line of sight.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e After many a failure, and some adjustments to the approach, one gorgeous winter morning in February, we achieved what we set out to do. Our cognitive processing tends to elicit visual symbolisms that are consensual - mention the word “Nevada” and we think of gambling in a desert.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut Florida is more complicated. It cannot be conveniently categorised or boxed. On the coast is Miami, with its tourist beaches, Art Deco, influencers, pop culture and Hispanic soul. Then up the road is Palm Beach with its genteel “Slim Aarons” high-society life of golf, tennis, bridge and cocktails.\nThe two communities could not be more different in culture and ethnicity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThey only have two things in common: favourable taxes and proximity to America’s Jurassic Park - an untamed territory that remains primeval and largely closed for business. The swamps of Florida were not made for human life, yet they sit within 30 miles of two of the most evolved and desirable places to live in the world. It is as stark a visual dislocation as there can be.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn no part of America does the price of real estate fall quicker than when travelling west from the Atlantic beaches of southern Florida. There are too many insects and far too many dangerous reptiles for sane mankind.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe emblematic beast of Florida is the alligator and for the 56,000 students at the University of Florida, life would be different if “Gators” did not exist. The big gators in the swamps are formidable adversaries.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis photograph was only captured after considerable research and conversations with those familiar with the location. The camera was controlled remotely, and no one was in danger during this project. Alligators are much more comfortable living in this part of Florida than humans will ever be.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIf Florida was fictional, we would laugh at its absurdity. It’s taken me 30 odd years, but in crocodile years that is nothing. These monsters were around long before man and can live to 100 years old.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nBig crocs are not easy to capture in a way that conveys their enormity, their primeval menace or indeed their textural magnificence. But this image works and when I saw it in large size at the printers in LA, my heart skipped a beat. It has been worth the wait. I think we pushed a few boundaries here.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe picture was made as opposed to taken as I had a preconceived idea of what I was trying to do. The starting point was my acceptance that head on images of crocodiles struggle as there is never enough depth of field with a telephoto to do them justice. The teeth can be in focus, but then probably not their eyes and certainly not their back or tail. I don't like to have my focal point half way back in an image - it creates a tension point if the nearest point of a portrait is out of focus. A head on portrait fails to convey length and length is the key variable.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI kNew I needed to work at 90 degrees, with the croc perpendicular to the camera. I also wanted to be low and close and I wanted a big crocodile - why on earth photograph a small one? If almost all of the crocodile was the same distance from the camera, there could be a colossal amount of information in the image.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nOur research - and we did a great deal - led us to one place. The key was that the river had to be narrow, as for safety reasons I could not work from the same bank as a 12 foot crocodile - that could be my last assignment. The narrow Grumeti river in Tanzania offers chances and there is one 200-yard section with some enormous crocs on the south bank with a north bank just 20 yards away. The steep bank deters crocodiles on the north bank and that was what I needed to be able to work without fear and for the camera angle to be low. I needed to be at the same height as the croc - give or take a meter.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe image was taken late in the day and the angle of the late sun gave me every chance for a clean picture - almost all the background was in heavy shadow and three stops underexposed.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \n\nMy preoccupation as an artist is to be original and creative. We often fail and disappoint ourselves, but this photograph is kind of cool. I haven't really seen a similar image and we do put in the hours trawling the net. I had the right camera, the right lens and the right exposure. Phew!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThis scene could well have happened 10,000 BC - but we will never know. That photograph has now sold out and I was honoured that both Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese signed a copy which sold for $200,000 at Art Miami at the end of that year.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It was always our intention to do a sequel, but Covid put paid to that in 2020. However, the delay gave me time to consider various options for the story line and fine tune logistics. The unanimous choice for round two was to shoot the boat scene with the FBI agents.  For many it is the most memorable scene in the whole movie and of course there is intense competition for that top spot.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In May of this year we had an opportunity to shoot our sequel off the coast of Marina del Rey in Los Angeles.  I had so much more light to play with than in the dealing room shot and my instinct was to be bold in the amount of content I could include in one frame.  Indeed, I had to work on the basis that the one frame had to tell the full story, otherwise the job would not have been done properly.  This is one of the challenges of still photography.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Once we sourced our necessarily large yacht, I pondered intensely over the make up of the content and the composition of that content. The wolf would always be the centre stage, but the layered nature of the front of the boat offered my best chance of an expansive narrative around and behind the wolf.  My favoured shooting time was an hour before sunset and from mid afternoon I had built up an intricate story board in my mind.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e About 6.45pm out on the open sea, all the constituent parts came together and I think everyone involved should be proud of the role they played in creating the parody. I would contend that if any one of the constituents of the photograph was removed, the picture would be materially lessened. It needed the giant lobsters; the spray of the champagne; the FBI; the helicopter; both wolves and even the girl on the top deck.  Luckily they were all on board - this was not a day to have after thoughts.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e They say that the best pictures can be looked at for a long time. Well here we go. They are both legends in their respective careers, but their legacy may lie in what they have done to champion and support good causes helping others living less than ideal lives.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e For this shoot, I took the Seattle Seahawks quarterback and his wife to my favourite shooting location in the world - the Pioneer Bar - high up in the mountains of West Montana. I wanted to be in command of as much as possible and with my intimate knowledge of the location, I knew I could muster together a smorgasbord of western archetypes to complement the rock star American couple. I also know the lighting and the angles inside out. It was a home fixture for me.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e My preconception was to build a vignette that lived and breathed cinema whilst playing on the importance of cultural refinement in the Wild West. To that end, I thought it would be playful to dress Russell and Ciara in black tie so as to accentuate the narrative. Finding the extras was easy - they are mostly my drinking buddies.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e There are no weak characters in this shot; there is simply no room for them. In fashioning together so many ethnicities, I hope his photograph celebrates the diversity of America and reminds us that the pursuit of the American Dream was, and is, inclusive.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Revlon Ambassadors have been filmed in many locations, but perhaps none offer the storied past of the Pioneer Bar. If there was a complexity, it was the tradeoff between proximity to the running stallion and my own personal safety. But his Roman trainer was so in control, I had no concerns.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eGladiator (2000) was nominated for 12 Oscars and won five. For many it remains a generational film and every day, tourists come to the Val d’Orcia pocket of Tuscany to have their little Russell Crowe fix. It was Crowe’s finest hour and meanwhile the cinematography team, led by John Mathieson, offered viewers a masterclass in the use of light.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLocation scouting is a key part of Ridley Scott’s formidable tool kit and the Val d’Orcia scenes in Gladiator stood out as much as any. There was little CGI in play here - what one saw on screen is what was there in reality - hence the appeal to tourists. It is easier to name the film stars who haven't stayed there than those who have. There is a priceless heritage to the Carlton and the spell it casts over visitors remains fully intact.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBuilt between 1911 and 1913 the hotel plays to the lore of the region. The twin cupolas are probably its most iconic feature; legend has it they were inspired by the breasts of the most sought-after courtesan in Europe at the time, Carolina “La Belle” Otero.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe hotel's massive facade is a generous backdrop for filming, and my goal was simply to pay homage to the hedonism, glamour and opulence of the French Riviera. There is zest for life and an appetite for indulgence.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI brought the Sach's family's Riva Aquarama – Dracula – into the foreground. It was, of course, Gunter Sachs who famously courted and then married Brigitte Bardot in the late ‘60s. They were one of the most photographed couples of the era – the ultimate embodiment of 1960s Riviera glamour. Dracula was just one of the many playboy toys Gunter brought to the region.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere is a timeless aesthetic to this photograph and that was my intent. There are only a few clues as to whether it was taken last week, 10 years ago or 40 years ago. It is these 3 or 4 shots that define a career.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI am not sure where my career will take me and I am not sure whether I have taken an iconic image yet - I will let others decide. But I do know that this photograph, which has been unveiled today as part of the Tag Heuer Don't Crack under Pressure campaign is probably the most powerful shot that I have ever taken. Yes, it was a commercial shoot with one of the world’s most famous women, but I think it goes beyond that and the image will be coveted by collectors. It grabs the eye and then holds it in a vice-like grip. Everything about the work is viscerally powerful.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI look back on that day with great emotion and there are so many people to thank. None more so than the British icon that is Cara Delevingne She is - of course - stunning, but she is also authentic and intelligent and couples this with admirable work ethic. Furthermore, on this day, she was incredibly brave and fittingly did not “crack under pressure”. This image is not manipulated - there were 5 yards between her and the lion. At no stage did she show tension or anxiety and that made my job so much easier.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI think a key to the image was the reasonably powerful directional late afternoon sunlight, as the shadows on both Cara and the lion are so consistent that the authenticity of the image cannot be questioned. In the morning, the light was flatter and therefore the lion and Cara were not as visually linked as they are here.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \n\nThis campaign would not have been possible without the help of Kevin Richardson in South Africa and I thank him for the awareness he brings to the plight of the lion in Africa. For interested collectors, the only question that matters with this image is the size of the available vacant wall space.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \n\nTim roams around a 100 km2 area inside and outside Amboseli National Park. He is tagged and well protected by the Kws rangers and we all hope and believe that when he passes, it will simply be through old age. It will still be a sad day as he is without doubt the most magnificent looking elephant in the world - half elephant, half mammoth. To be in his company and to be this close is an exhilarating and primeval experience. I have been lucky to have had many full-on encounters with alpha animals, but none beats this.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e  \n\nI kNew what I wanted to achieve - textural intensity, a sense of scale and a ground level perspective. This combination requires nerve and the company of experienced rangers with a knowledge of Tim's behaviour. Camera settings were also more vital than normal as I wanted the detail of a Vermeer painting. As I was lying on the ground I was already envisaging the end image being printed the size of a table tennis table.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \n\nI have now seen it that size and it’s visually spellbinding. For Americans of all ethnicities with a thirst for history, Big Horn has become something of a pilgrimage and for those with a thirst for alcohol, the saloon is the only place to get a beer within a 70 mile radius.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThe Us 7th Cavalry suffered big losses in the two-day battle - over 300 men - and the bravery of General Custer has become the stuff of legends. But so too the Crow Indians - who celebrate the occasion every year on its 25th June anniversary. The names of the Lakota Sioux Chiefs are now so familiar - Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Lame White Man and Two Moon. Arguably no battle in the history of the world has been of greater inspiration for naming pubs and nightclubs than The Battle of Little Big Horn.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThe Crow Indians remain revered and as a result of some networking, I had the opportunity to meet with the current Crow Chief - a direct descendent of those that fought alongside Custer 140 years ago. Bulltail was an older man of great dignity and whilst he spoke some English, it was clear that Crow was his language of choice - as well it should be.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nHe agreed to be photographed by me and I had a preconception of what we could do. My idea was simply to cram the view finder with as many characters as possible and use the limited depth of field to prioritise the pivotal players in the scene. Preferably there would be some sense of movement - and the responsibility for that would lie with the wolf. Everything else was secondary to the wolf being sharp and I kNew I could rely on the model - she always nails it.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThis photograph is very much made in Montana and has been received well by many of my friends in the state. Such are the boundary lines in fine-art photography.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nWhen looking for opportunities like this one in South Georgia, photographers need to keep an eye out for seals— especially fur seals. It pays to have either eyes in the back of your head or an assistant on the lookout for a maverick aggressive seal. Just two days before\nthis photograph was taken, another photographer was attacked from behind by an aggressive seal. These attacks often happen when a photographer is lying down photographing penguins. They\nare so “in the zone” that they’re oblivious to the fact that they have invaded the personal territory of a mammal that\nwe are sometimes complacent toward. Seal attacks can be fatal.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThe photographer’s body was in an awful mess when he was taken back\nto the ship, and the decision was made\nto sail back to the Falklands immediately. My goal was a full-on face-off portrait of a hippopotamus, which emphatically conveyed both the enormity of a bull and also the primeval bone structure of his face. Hippos are half contemporary African wildlife,\nhalf dinosaur, and 100 percent lethal when compromised.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI wanted to get close and low, but with thousands of hippos on the Zambezi, this required either a large dose of bravery or a momentarily compliant animal. In most cases, hippos will drop their heads and go underwater if approached—they are mammal submarines with little tolerance for humans. Working on the Zambezi can be extremely frustrating, but the world does not need any more banal long-distance hippo shots from a boat—in which there is neither intensity nor immersion.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI had one card in my hand: the help and support of the best guide on the lower Zambezi. To him, each hippo on his stretch of the river has a personality and, in a few cases, even a name. Over the years, he has become familiar with many individual male hippos that to the rest of us look identical. There was one hippo—Dexter—who showboated and was not intimidated by boats or humans.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nMy guide recommended that I lie on the other bank 30 yards across the creek and wait until I grabbed Dexter’s attention. Luckily, my presence had\nno impact, but the angle required me\nto crawl even closer through mud and water. As Dexter moved toward me, it was not easy to think about single-point focus on the camera, composition, or exposure from the sun. We are very privileged to work so closely with such a magnificent animal as the adult polar bear.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThe hard thing, as many know, about working from a small boat in choppy seas, is that the camera moves in step with the boat. This is tough enough on a small lens, but with a big lens it's very challenging indeed. Throw in subzero temperatures and a wind chill and we have a true test of one’s ability to work in tough conditions. I am glad no one can see some of the pictures I took in that sequence - they were of the sky!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe one thing I had in my favour - which made all the difference was strong directional light behind me. This allowed for a shutter speed of 1\/3000 of second - which I needed to take away the movement of both the boat and the polar bear. I don’t think I could have grabbed this moment on a cloudy day. For anyone who knows this area, the combination of whites provokes a degree of visual disquietude. It was quite a remarkable sight that was all down to the freak weather.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe biblical rainfall had discouraged other visitors, so I had the amphitheater to myself. The bigger problem was that there were very few elephants in the park—the rain had pushed them out and into the forests below Kilimanjaro. I kNew, however, that there are always a good number of big elephants hanging around in the vicinity of the Kenya Wildlife Service Rangers’ headquarters.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nAs soon as I saw the white meadows,\nI kNew there was a chance of an image that offered a story of both lyrical\ngrace and beauty—especially if the clouds lifted and the summit of Africa’s tallest mountain was exposed for a\nfew minutes. Then I just needed the elephants—no elephants, no party. About 5:00 p.m., everything came together as a small group of elephants headed to the foothills for the night and walked right through the white meadows. The paradox is that this simple portrait was the product of fairly complex working arrangements in the field.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nUnlike many of my lion shots, this was not taken with remote controls, it was camera in hand. I was in a two-man cage, with my assistant behind me controlling the door with a rope. The minimum distance I could feel safe was about 25 feet and this required the use of a 200 mm lens – long for me, but the outstanding lens in Nikon’s telephoto range.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nIn my view, the best time to photograph lions is about half an hour after sunrise. The light gets stronger by the minute and this allows for a faster shutter speed or more depth of field. The face of the lion could not be sharper – every detail is there and he is looking right into my eyes – as he is transfixed. Three steps forward and the cage door closed and with it the opportunity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThe image is timeless and the backlit dust adds to its elemental and rather biblical mood. I thought that we should call it Genesis. Many camera enthusiasts thought that given the dangerous subject matter, it must have been a 400m telephoto lens or more, but this sort of distance compression would have taken the power away from the portrait. This photograph was actually taken with a 105m lens and the benefits are immediately clear. We were that close.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nIf a fashion photographer is working with a top model, it is most unlikely that he or she will even carry a telephoto lens to the assignment as the best distance to work from is anything from close to very close. Ideally it should be no different with a predator – but clearly there are issues with proximity, which is why I often use remote controls.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nIn this conservation area, there is no chance of using a remote as it is absolutely forbidden to step foot on the ground for patently obvious reasons. The only possibility therefore is to shoot from my caged vehicle with our camera window about 4 feet off the ground. This means that good shooting locations would be very limited, as I never really want to be above the eye of an animal – that angle of view immediately kills a sense of a real encounter. The lower the camera, the more immersive the image.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nIn our reconnaissance there was just one small hill that the vehicle could get close to in the deep snow – the topography in this part of north east China can be extremely flat and we just had to hope that the tiger would work his way to our vantage point. Vehicles cannot get stuck here, as that then poses a logistical problem, so it was all quite a riddle. It was complicated further by the fact that the light also becomes too stark by about 10 am in the winter – we were asking for a great deal to come right. The clock ticks on a cold, clear Siberian morning in January.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nIt did, however, happen and the bonus was that the tiger was enormous – maybe 750 pounds and I was working from just 5 feet away. Passers-by were reminded that the next place to eat, refuel or sleep was once 100 miles away - and that’s to the north, south, east and west. Whilst this distance may now have halved to the east, it remains a remote outpost. This is a truly authentic - tie up your horses – saloon, situated not many miles from the battlefield of Little Big Horn - commonly known as Custer’s Last Stand.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI discovered this final frontier jewel from trawling through ghost town imagery on the internet and Ingomar, Montana is a few nasty bouts of pneumonia away from being a ghost town. The current population is 12 and there is no evidence of young romance or pregnancy in the “hood”. Guns heavily outnumber prams in the North East of Montana - this is no country for old men or children. The omens don't look good for Ingomar and sadly the owner - the rather fabulously named “Boots” - has now put the Jersey Lilly up for sale for $250,000.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI found Tarantino’s playful and character centric directing of Django Unchained so entertaining that I must have watched it 10 times.  Every actor hammed up their role and the stunning backdrops of California, Wyoming and Louisiana played host to a performing feast.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe film no doubt influenced this shot. In Ingomar, I certainly had a Wild West backdrop to play with and the composition was straightforward with a strong early morning light. I just needed to tell a fictional story that had creative courage.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nSome people have asked me what the message is? There is no real message - a priest, a prostitute, a beautiful lady and a grizzly hooked up for the night and now they are leaving. What they got up to the previous evening, we will never know. I think introducing 1930s luggage to the set was a smart idea, but in this vignette the four central characters are the real stars.  As with the characters in Django, they just turned the music up, not down. Roxanna Redfoot - as always - played her role with great intelligence.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI have worked with Adam - a largely habituated and people friendly bear - on a couple of occasions. He is well looked after in the hills of Montana and could not survive in the true wild. Based in the town of Ingomar, Montana (population 12), it is a long way from anywhere. In fact, there is no store or fuel within a 45-minute drive north, south, east or west. It truly is the “last chance saloon”. My fixer in Montana spoke to the owner - a cowboy rather splendidly called “Boots” - and he agreed that we could use the interior and exterior for filming on a Monday and Tuesday in the early summer - when the bar itself would normally be closed. Permits were also secured with the local authorities to allow us to film in the bar with a tame bear. I did a reconnaissance the previous Saturday - a good three-hour round trip from Billings, Montana - to check the light and the bar’s interior. It was clear that there was potential to tell a “wild west” story, but equally I would have very little depth of field in any photograph I took - the window light was okay, but not overly generous. I was drawn to the number of animal heads on the wall and in particular the massive bison in the top corner seemed a great prop to play with, albeit I needed a composition to show it off.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nRoxanna Redfoot from Dallas, Texas is a star - she is smart, as well as striking and can play any character role. On this occasion, her role was within her comfort zone - a sassy and smokingly sexy saloon bar maid with a no-nonsense approach to over eager customers. The customer, Adam - a 1000 lb brown bear - is not normally aggressive but working with him is far from easy - as he does not speak English. Roxanna showed no anxiety and was theatrical and focused from start to finish. Her eyes had to tell a story. For my part, I had a preconception and an image in my head. It was vital to me that both the bear’s head and Roxy’s head had to be equidistant from my camera lens - which probably meant that they had to be looking at each other. I kNew that we would have a limited window of opportunity as Adam was not going to play the role for long - he gets bored easily. Luckily the rabbit behind the bar kept him focused for longer than I expected. The vast majority of shots did not work for one reason or another - my focus, the bear’s head position or the interaction between the two characters. But this one image is a gem. But in March, when I travelled to the spectacular Simien Mountain range in Northern Ethiopia, I travelled light as intuitively I kNew that I only needed to take my “go to” 28mm wide angle lens.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe reason for this was two fold - firstly I kNew that the views are so majestic and biblical from the 12,000 feet peak of the escarpments, that any image that didn’t convey this narrative would fail. Secondly, my research has repeatedly told me that with the right local guide, the gelada baboon would not only be found with ease two hours after dawn and two hours before dusk around the escarpment edge, but also that proximity would not be an issue. This made the 28mm lens an easy choice.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe air is thin at 12,000 feet and I was glad of a light camera bag. But I still found myself easily out of breath and grumpy because the mornings were simply not working. The view down from the escarpment takes the full brunt of the morning sun and the gelada’s eyes narrow and squint when facing the sun. I never like working “with the light anyway”, but it was clear that the big opportunity for the preconceived shot would be from 5 pm onwards. The gelada is the most decorative ape in the world – its beauty can’t be compromised by harsh light.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nOn the Sunday afternoon, there was a torrential rain storm and I had all but given up for the day. But around 4 pm, the rain and thunder stopped and the escarpments were slowly brought to life with shafts of low late light. And so it was that we left the comfort of our dry camp and in one precious moment, I had the perfect encounter with a male gelada in exactly the kind of spot I would have dreamt of. Better still, the rain had transformed his hair from its traditional style into an electrified one. A bit like my shot, Grumpy Monkey, from a few years back, freak weather has given the image the edge.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI do my job for moments like this. This photograph – as well as any I have taken in the last few years – hammers home the diversity of our planet. The human was trespassing in the ape’s mountain kingdom. His eyes say everything – the conviction of proprietorial residence for sure, but also dignity and resolve. From a budget of $8 million, the box office receipts topped $125 million, and rightly so.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThe main challenge in making the documentary was the weather, with temperatures between -58 and -76 degrees Fahrenheit (-50 and -60 degrees Celsius). At dawn, the film crew would spend half an hour putting on\nsix layers of clothes, and on some days they could not spend more than three hours outside. They also worked in winds with gusts up to 125 miles per hour. But the result was an astonishing achievement and the most immersive insight into the extreme yearly life of emperor penguins. Jacquet and his team deserve every accolade they received.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nIn comparison, my work in South Georgia with king penguins was a complete walk in the park. There was absolutely nothing heroic about the trip at all and, if anything, the weather was a little too springlike to offer the kind of visceral imagery I was seeking.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nPenguins do march very much like\na military regiment, and I hoped that one day my team and I would be treated to some miserable conditions in South Georgia, as snowfall can add character to an image and endorse a sense of place. We got our day, and luckily this king penguin group obliged with this vignette. Hundreds of king penguins in groups of 10 to 20 were making the journey, with the South Atlantic in the background and the trapped glacial lake in the foreground. On this day the wind was gentle, which allowed greater creativity in photographing the fishing commute.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nIf the march of the penguins is perpendicular to the camera, all the penguins should be in focus. But generally penguins do not march as orderly as Marines, and their line tends to be characterized by chaos rather\nthan even spacing. If any penguin obscures part of another—and this happens most of the time—it creates a visual tension point and that tension doubles in a reflection. I want these types of images to be simple and easy on the eye, and I can’t stand tension points.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nIt can be incredibly frustrating when there is nothing a cameraman can do. Penguins are not actors and cannot be directed. It’s nature’s way of challenging artistic preconceptions.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nIf there are just a few penguins in a line, the task is easier, but the longer the line, the more arresting the image. As it turned out, there was just one image in which it all came together. The second- and third-last penguins were almost together, and the beak of the second-last could have been obscured, which would have killed the image. But, by a fraction, all was Ok. At the margin - and so much in this job is at the margin - the zebra in Lewa are less skittish than I find elsewhere and this allows some degree of proximity. It is probably just the fact that there is a decent amount of traffic in Lewa and the zebra are not spooked by vehicles per se.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nIt is still a real challenge to get a strong abstract image, because there is no way the cameraman can leave his or her vehicle - they will bolt and unless the zebra are on raised ground versus the jeep, it is hard not to be marginally shooting down on them - which I never like.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nLewa offers chances, but it is intense work and ideally the sun should be low - which limits the time slots to about two hours a day.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThey are very beautiful mammals - that is a given. Before we left London, we had given a great deal of thought as to how to get a camera as low to the ground as possible without risking our safety or the reputation of our long standing friend and guide. Ranthambore is not a place to take any chances - one tiger alone has killed four people there in the last few years.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nWe found a solution in building a right-angled boom pole with a robust, bespoke camera platform that could be lowered and then operated by remote control from the safety of the jeep. The camera itself would be within inches of the jeep, but crucially, it would lay flat on the ground. Three feet might not seem a big deal, but the change in perspective allows a photograph to become much more immersive.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThis is a low percentage approach, as the focus has to be prejudged and the angle of view must be calculated before hand. There is no time to be setting up equipment that gives a live view from an ancillary device - encounters like this happen all too quickly to be over complicating matters with technology. We failed several times on other occasions by misjudging one or more variables. My maths was simply wrong.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nIn this case, we nailed it. I used the Nikon D850 camera body, because my sense was that we needed as much detail as possible, and whilst the frames per second of a D5 gave us a little more room for error in the focusing, I felt it was worth the risk. This image needs to be at the very least, life size.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nSmall details have turned a well executed idea, into a big image. The tiger’s left paw surging through the water gives him menace and power. The water shaped around that paw has an intricacy that conveys the force of a man eater.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThis five minute encounter was the only time during our entire trip that I didn't feel the heat. The Us has taken ownership of the term “road trip” as explained succinctly by this stretch of tarmac. It's truly an iconic and timeless vista that shouts “The Wild West”.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nGladiator is probably Ridley Scott's finest movie and I have watched it over and over again. Meanwhile, Thelma and Louise is rightly one of the most lauded road trip movies of all time. About a month ago, I picked up the Dvd box and had a moment of inspiration. Their use of the convertible car and the head on angle offered a totally different perspective on Monument Valley.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nTaking my pre-conception through to reality that Wednesday morning was no small task. I want to thank Brawler Productions in La for collaborating with me and helping secure exclusive use of the road at the key time, around 7.40 am. It's a busy road and the Utah State Police were fantastic. Josie Canseco played her role brilliantly - it was not easy to look that glamorous and in charge with a wolf sitting in Thelma’s seat. It is no surprise that Victoria’s Secret has booked her for its latest show in Nyc.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nWe arrived on site two days before the shoot as we wanted to be in control of everything within our control. I can’t remember ever pondering more over camera settings and lenses. I kNew I would have a generous amount of light to play with at 7.40 and we had to use it well. The big variable was the wolf’s behaviour - the light gets too harsh from about 8am and therefore there was only a small window to get the job wrapped. It was tight, but we did it. All in all, it was a great team effort in a fairly remote part of the American West.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nWhen we showed this picture for the first time in late September the reaction was huge. It is a very special image and I think we nailed it. The first is that my angle must be ground up – there is no other way. The second factor is that irrespective of the rush of being so close to the ultimate predator, there can be no margin of error in the focus around his eyes. An inch out either way and the image is toast. Thirdly there must be movement to convey the sense of threat.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nAll the requirements were accomplished and we imposed ourselves, rather than letting the situation dictate. In retrospect, the beauty of this enormous bear was an added bonus – he had just been in the water and made a kill. This lent some textural beauty to his coat. It all came together in a split second – but that is the essence of photography.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nI have looked back at my first efforts with polar bears and compared them to this powerful image. It has been a long journey of disappointment, discovery and then finally delivery. There were two possible solutions - to move the story further away from the building, which would risk disassociation, or to get close to the building and try and capture the wolf with a true wide-angle lens, not easy at all and could risk ending with a lousy series of far lit loose shots. The whole building would be in for sure, but to work with a 28mm lens and a wolf is not to play the percentages.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nWe had no real choice but to go for the second option and roll the dice. We got lucky, but as someone once said “Luck is the residue of design”. I have flown south from Iliamna on a float plane about 20 times over the years during the salmon run.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThere is no consensual “best place” to photograph bears in Alaska because with consensus comes popularity and regulation, which then reduces the location’s edge and serenity. The famous Brooks Falls - for instance - is a soulless place to photograph bears in their normal habitat, because youthful game wardens and excited tourists outnumber the bears 40 to 1. I have respect for any photographer who comes away from Brooks with a big image.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nUp on Moraine, however, it is the true wild. It is certainly the best place for me to employ my close up and immersive style of photography. The bear activity fluctuates with the timing of the sockeye salmon run and a matter of days can make a material difference to the chances of success. In 2018 the salmon were very late and our trip to rain-sodden Iliamna was literally a washout. Soon after we left, the fish arrived and with them the bears and so I kNew I had no choice but to return from La.\nAt one point on a Tuesday - up on Funnel Creek - my guide and myself - alone in the wilderness - counted 24 bears in our sight at one single time. One three-year- old bear, fishing with his brother stood out as he was almost albino in colour. His behaviour was predictable and relaxed as he and his twin fished the confluence and - given that this is very much my comfort zone too - I spotted a clear opportunity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nMy standard working distance for a remote set up is around 4 feet as this is where, with the help of a prime lens, the most textural detail can be captured. It’s still a low percentage shot as my depth of field in the rain clouds of Katmai will be three inches at best.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nBears only look like cuddly teddy bears when they are between two and three years old. Any younger and they look like a hybrid animal and when they get older they lose their bedroom looks. Most of the stylists are covered from head to toe in tattoos, and the restroom is decorated exclusively in heterosexual porn photos.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI kNew I needed characters in the image who would highlight the vibrant culture of Los Angeles and the hipster vibe of Fairfax. The Compton Cowboys were a start. I thought a 1970s roller skating disco girl was a great addition, especially if I could find another Boogie Nights–type of character to endorse that angle. Then I just wanted to fill in with some other badass characters.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe best image from that day is a winner. From a technical perspective,\n it was a tough day. There was so little light coming into the shop, and I didn’t want to destroy the sense of place by using too much Led panel lighting. Getting that crowd and the horse to stay still was no easy task. Focus and detail were everything. What am I trying\nto say with the image? Nothing. We were shooting right on the edge of the cliff - have a look at the behind the scenes video we produced for the shoot.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThere were easy parts to getting this image - the light we kNew would be at its most dramatic around 5.30pm and getting the Chevy in place just required a good off road driver - anyone really other than me.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThe hard part was to capture any brief moments of true interaction between Josie Canseco and the wolf. I have worked with this wolf - Crocket - before and he can be quite chilled, but getting them to face each other - as if in a deep and intense conversation was a tough brief for Crocket’s handler. Then again all we needed for the killer vignette was one second of luck and eventually, as the light started to fade, we got it.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nJosie is a world class Victoria’s Secret model and it shows. To play that role next to a wolf in the front seats of a car with a 2000 feet drop behind you is not a normal day’s work. South Georgia is raw and dramatic with many fiercely steep mountains towering above the wildlife and to exclude them from an image would risk telling only half the story. These mountains define the island.\nThe riddle is that to include the Everest like peaks and also the wildlife on the beaches below risks the image being too loose - there must be detail in the foreground and this necessitates proximity. So I am wanting everything and that can be a challenge in low light. I dwelt over this dilemma for many hours on the way to South Georgia and I was reminded that simple maths often plays a lead role in making an image.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThe lens best equipped for the challenge of giving depth as well as foreground detail is my favourite Nikkor 58mm F1.4 lens - it is the most important piece of camera equipment I own.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThe first day on St Andrews Bay, we landed on the beach at 4.40 am, but this was too late to set up and then capture the soft early morning light. By 5.20 am, on a clear summer day the light is already too harsh and the King Penguins are lit up like Christmas trees. It is too much. So the following day, the whole team was on the beach by 3.50 am - quite an achievement and one we are all retrospectively proud of.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nI had my moment in the corner of the beach at about 4.40 am. Also, the importance of the art directorship of the ad is normally second to the impact of the commercial message.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nFor those that focus on the directorship and filming, Ridley Scott’s 1984 Apple Macintosh advert remains iconic - almost as integral to his career as big features like Aliens and Gladiator. Then last year, the Guinness advert directed by Henry Alex Rubin featuring the Compton Cowboys struck a chord with many whether they were from Ireland, the Uk or indeed La or Compton itself.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nI watched the advert many times and I would all urge you to view it on YouTube - it is not a wasted two minutes. It prompted me to go and check out Compton in La and also to meet the Cowboys. They really do have quite a story to tell.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nWe did a location scout early one Sunday morning in Compton, but I found it difficult to find somewhere “in the hood” that would frame the group as well as I would like. It was all a little mainstream and clichéd. My leaning was towards an indoor shot, but that would put an emphasis on the visual strength of the location. Our production team - led by Doug Riggs - suggested a famous old nightclub in La called the Warwick and we went for a drive by the next day. He was right - It was perfect and had a real sense of glamour and place. Conceptually I veered towards reinforcing that glamour with placed extras and then throwing in the rawness of The Compton Cowboys.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThe singer - Nereyda Bird - is not a member of the Compton Cowboys - she is from Philly. But she did a grand job and is, I think, destined for great things. As for the Cowboys - they were a delight to work with and I look forward to partnering with them again soon. I am sensitive to the need to deliver with a portrait, as I am all too aware that wildlife photography can be dull.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nPolar bears are certainly big and dangerous, but they are more than that— they sit at the top of the food chain at the top of the world. Inevitably, imagery of polar bears is often used to emphasize the cold, but great photographs of this mammal should also convey majesty and sovereignty. Of all the predators on the planet, it is the polar bear that I find\nthe most regal. That was the prompt in my preconception; I needed to home\nin on the majesty of the bear.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nTo do this well requires a special image; there is no room for anything other than intimacy and crystal-sharp focus against a perfect backdrop. Svalbard is no studio—it is the wild— and this goes some way to explain why this image was preceded by five years of failure. The bear’s distinctive Roman nose is best captured with\nthe mammal perpendicular to the camera with his head raised.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nI wanted an image that celebrated\nthe life of the polar bear. That gorgeous summer day, I shot almost directly\ninto the sun, and the glittering sea is appropriate—this is a celebration of the glory of Earth and the polar bear’s position at its summit. She seemed largely comfortable with our presence. My instinct was to work with my “go to” 58mm lens and set the camera for as much detail as possible. The trick was to be in the water and to make myself look small and unthreatening (harder now than it once was!).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e But I needed some protection because on the way up river we had noticed several crocodiles and I am terrified of crocs. They could have been anywhere, skulking in the water reeds, but after some manoeuvring, the two motor boats formed a V shape and blocked off the water behind and to the left and right of me. It was only later that our lead guide told me, with a mischievous grin, that there had been a recent crocodile attack nearby but didn’t think he could tell me before otherwise I wouldn’t have got the shot. I know the ghost village of Nevada City well and I kNew exactly where I would shoot. I have worked with Adam – the tame bear – before, he has been used in many films and commercials over the years and is well looked after.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nArt Students know only too well that the premise for the gap between Jesus and Mary in Da Vinci’s masterpiece is the subject of much debate. The consensual view is that it represents femininity and that Mary’s privileged position on Christ’s right hand side was critical to the symbolism that pervades the work.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nMy focus was to get that V shape as close to Da Vinci’s as possible – not the easiest of briefs given that Jesus was now a bear. There were other factors to be considered.\nFor a start, it was -10 degrees that afternoon and then some of the characters on the set were not the best of friends – a rather feudal rivalry exists between some villages high in the hills of Montana.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nAs much as possible, every character had to take the same pose as in the original and this required quite a bit of pre-shoot tutoring. The best pictures can never be retaken.\nThere were two or three key elements to its capture. First, because the physical enormity of an adult bear is best conveyed head-on and from low on the ground, my team and I had to try and find a position where the terrain offered a horizon and an incline between me and the bear. The second and more important dynamic was to use the 25-mile-per- hour wind to our favor. Bears can smell us from a long way away if they are downwind. The overriding factor, of course, was my team’s safety. At all times we had to have an escape route. We kNew what to do here, and we had the best Inuit guide in the area. We felt safe with him, but please do not try this at home.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThis bear is enormous, and my positioning shows that off. It was all over in maybe five seconds, but I will never forget them.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nPeople understandably worry about polar bear numbers, but rest assured there are still a lot of big, healthy bears\non the North Slope. I think we saw\nmore than 25 in a week. There are two conceivable causes of habitat loss for polar bears: one from global warming and one from population growth and human encroachment. We calculated that in total we had spent 35 hours in a jeep looking for tigers and in that time, we were with tigers on our own for about 30 minutes. That equates to being employed for about 1.5% of the time and places this assignment right at the low end of what we do, along with polar bears in Svalbard. It is also consistent with my previous trips to Ranthambore, which have all been in the 1-2% range. To offer some context, elephants in Amboseli would be about 40% of available time and lions in the Serengeti about 10%.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nTigers are therefore a big ask in terms of patience and resolve. It is very hot in May and the roads are not made for comfort. These are long days and the drinking water becomes warm by noon - even in a cooler. The upside is that when the encounters happen, they can be spellbinding. The tiger is the stuff of fantasy and fable and it is no surprise that they are many people’s favourite animal. The stripes of a tiger speak to us on many levels.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThis mother of three, is well known to the guides and because tigers feel the heat just as much as we do, watering holes in the middle of the day offered the best chance of meeting her in her territory. There is a great amount of luck involved in this approach as I need to be low as well as safe and many watering holes do not allow for this. I needed the right waterhole and to be there at the right time. She also needed to face me - and that in itself was against the odds.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nOn this occasion, I was able to get very low and she confronted me head on. The shadowed ripples of water fuse with her stripes in a manner I could never have preconceived. The backdrops are messy and opportunities do not come along as frequently as in some parks in Kenya.\nI believe there are better places to garner content of most of the iconic fauna of Africa. But the river itself and its tributaries have the potential to deliver, especially at dawn and dusk, and it\nis my favorite location in the world to work with hippos.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe entrance of a narrow creek\non the Zambian side of the Zambezi\nis controlled by an enormous hippopotamus that locals have named Dexter. The water levels can be low here before the rains come, and that means Dexter’s enormous bulk is more on show than the thousands of his fellow species that hang out in the Zambezi itself. This is his home, and he is most proprietorial.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nIn the months of June and July, the temperature can move from around freezing to 86 degrees Fahrenheit\n(30 degrees Celsius) between dawn and midday. I’ve never known that speed\nof temperature change anywhere else in the world, and the steam that rises off the warm water during a freezing sunrise offers great potential for artists.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe creek in early morning reminds me somewhat of a mythical Scooby Doo set. Either side is heavily wooded, and this draws the eye back to the water, which, in the minutes before sunrise, can look ethereal to the point of downright creepy. I needed content for this image, which meant many things had to be right in addition to Dexter himself. The clock seemingly broke about 100 years ago.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nOver the last few years we have been fairly relentless networking up in a village in the mountains. I have been there 7 times and we have invested emotionally as well as financially in order to be able to tell stories with the camera. This week – on Robbie Burns night – appropriately enough – we had our reward. There was no point attempting this without a solid base of locals that genuinely wanted to help.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI know this bar in the mountains inside out and the locals know me. Everyone wanted a role in the shoot, but we had to be selective. I wanted ex-convicts, wolf wranglers, wannabe Davey Crocketts and crazy old mountain men that are drunk by 11 am. But it needed more – the barmaid had to have the right look – as she would be pivotal to the image – as would the chosen mountain man. It would be a key juxtaposition. I found the girl – Roxanna Redfoot (what a name) – from Dallas and she was brilliant.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe wolf I could rely on – I have worked with him before and so long as he doesn’t tire I had a chance. But there is no light in the bar – so it as all seat-of-the-pants stuff technically – there was no margin for error in focus. A flash gun would destroy the emotion and sense of place.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nAs I expected, most of the photographs were not sharp or someone messed up (including me). The composition was always however bang on. I just needed one stroke of luck – 1 \/ 125th of a second that would capture Montana. To have been another two seconds on the ground, would have been to take unnecessary risk. I knew I had something very major and it was a relief to find out from the safety of the jeep that my focus was bang on.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Before this privileged moment in Amboseli, I had never come close to a taking a decent portrait of a baby elephant. Babies are skittish, clingy and always well protected - most images tend to be messy with a cocktail of legs - some large, some small and I have also struggled to convey the height differential with a giant adult. The lack of clear opportunities should be no surprise - elephants have great emotional intelligence and no more so than in protecting their young - they are rarely physically detached from their mothers or herd. It is rare to even see them fully exposed to day light, unless they are running between adults.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I want my work to be full of emotion - without this, there needs be a great number of compensating factors for a photograph to be transcendental. I think The Walk of Life will connect emotionally with people on a wide number of levels and provoke the odd goosebump and maybe even a tear. Its strength comes from the deep symbolism of the narrative - there is no more important job in the world than being a mother. 22 months is a long time to be pregnant and it seems to harbour the deepest of loves.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I hope that the serenity and power of this image will allow it to stand the test of time. If that is the case, give the credit to the elephant not me. To quote John Donne; ”Nature's great masterpiece, an elephant; the only harmless great thing.” Look at this photograph and one can only find accord.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I don’t tend to use long lenses and did not take one to Africa, but I knew from earlier failures in the week that if the elephant herd continued on their path towards me, I needed magnification for an image to work. A 105mm lens would have been too loose as I knew I would never be allowed to get close to the baby. The grass was too high for remotes with wide angles so I was stuffed with my preconceived and default position approach. Luckily, I was able to borrow a longer lens from the team. He went to check on his lions and his instincts were sadly right - Thor had been struck by lightning and killed. This is no myth or fable - it is the heartbreaking reality. Astonishingly, it was also the day, that Nelson Mandela - the lion of Africa passed away - less than an hour's drive from where Thor had been struck by lightning.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThis remains one of the most extraordinary stories I have heard in the wild and hints at dark powers somewhere up in the sky. You could not make it up.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nWhite Lions are a colour mutation of the lion and rarely found outside the Timbavati region of South Africa. To Kevin, Thor was unique and seemingly irIGNOREable. But over time, the wounds healed and it was a spiritual moment to recently find that there was a beautiful New three-year old white lion in the sanctuary.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nIt must have been an emotional and difficult decision - but Kevin has named him Thor. Icelandic horses may look wild, but because they can be managed by their owners, many ideas are possible.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nMy cognitive processing in the country is characterised by the desire to be creatively bold. It often doesn't not come off, but as Wayne Gretzky said “you miss 100% of the shots you don't take”. It is better to try and not succeed, than never try at all. And I have got used to not succeeding in Iceland.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nI have rarely known a wind as strong as the one that greeted us in Iceland in March 2018 and whilst it made driving difficult, the upside was that the sea was transformed into a ferocious body of white horses. Stormy seas have long attracted artists and whether I am at home in Devon, or working in California, a powerful sea casts a magnetic visual spell on me. I am not alone in this obsession, but images of storms often fail to convey the enormity and rawness of the conditions. Working the situation into a transcending single shot narrative is a tough ask.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nI just needed to work towards a plan as quickly as possible, before the winds subsided. My instincts were immediately to find a white horse to complement the conditions and my fixers were already on this thought process by the time I arrived in Iceland.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nThere are many components to this image that coalesce and the backdrop of these unruly and dramatic rock pinnacles was an immediate choice. They are a well-known formation by the coastal village of Vik, which is about three hours’ drive east from the capital. The village is well known to film makers because of its black beaches and other worldly rock formations. I have stayed nights in Vik in the past and yearned for conditions like these in which to shoot.. This really is Game of Thrones territory.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nI needed the distance between the horse and the rocks to be as short as possible and this necessitated shooting at low tide - a stroke of luck as this would be early the next morning and the wind was forecast to die down in the afternoon. Indeed, this image was taken only 18 hours after we touched down in Keflavik, which says a great deal about the team around me.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nIceland is a truly remarkable country and the horses that live there have a uniquely wild beauty.
