The first\u2028is that the flat and arid topography of the park—and particularly of the dry lake outside it—lends itself not only to clean backdrops, but also to good predictive analysis of elephant movement. The second is that I can get out and about and set up remotes without infringing upon any laws or endangering myself. Third, the elephants in Amboseli, just like in Tsavo, can be very big. I really don’t look outside of Kenya for elephants; it is the home of the big tuskers.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This was one of my most coveted images in 2017, and the limited-edition prints of it sold out within a year.\u2028That sort of demand always suggests a special image. I want to take pictures that stop people in their tracks. An American friend of mine in the fashion industry refers to it as a “Kennedy Dead” photograph or headline. This is a “Kennedy Dead” photograph.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In truth, it is a lucky shot on the widest-angle lens I have—the 20mm. The subject needs to be close, otherwise it\u2028will always be “loose,” and this requires a great deal of predictive analysis and good fortune. I am clearly not with the camera!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The composition is an act of god,\u2028but I am willing to take it—the frame within the frame. The big bull had to block the late-afternoon sun or there was no picture. He kindly did that, which allowed the lighting to be energetic and dramatic. A group of male bison charging through heavy snow, directly towards a camera is certainly a rare sight and it always seemed a bridge too far from almost every perspective. The question has always been where and how could this epic scene unfold in front of a camera?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Yellowstone National Park was never going to be the answer.  This sort of collective behaviour does not tend to happen in the park and if it did, there would be zero chance of being in the right place at the right time to film it. It is difficult to break new ground in Yellowstone.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In 2020 an American artist, John Banovich, an exceptional talent and good friend, suggested that I approach Ted Turner to see if I could gain access to his stunning 180 square mile ranch - Flying D - saddling Yellowstone and neighbouring Big Sky. This remarkable place is nine times the size of Manhattan and showcases Montana at its most stunning best.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e John’s wonderful painting of a group of running bison adorns the wall of the main reception of the exclusive Yellowstone Club and he took his inspiration from spending time at Ted Turner’s ranch.  I recognised that this was a link worth pursuing. Flatteringly, a few months after my initial approach, the Turner team agreed to collaborate in the hope that we could raise money for Ted’s conservation initiatives.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Ted Turner is one of America’s biggest landowners and also one of its most acclaimed conservationists and he reintroduced both bison and wolves into Flying D, one of his three Montana ranches. In mid-winter, his team of ranchers will herd some of the 5,000-resident bison into areas where feeding is easier and this controlled activity creates an opportunity to work a situation.  Just like cowboys herding their cattle in Texas, the skill sets of the Turner ranchers in deep snow are a privilege to watch.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The difficulty is that bison in this vast ranch are more skittish of humans on foot than their Yellowstone cousins, who see thousands of tourists every day.   I therefore needed either to be camouflaged or out of sight as they made haste in my direction. Luckily the Flying D team knew of a group of rocks behind which I would be obscured from the bison’s line of sight.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e After many a failure, and some adjustments to the approach, one gorgeous winter morning in February, we achieved what we set out to do. Our cognitive processing tends to elicit visual symbolisms that are consensual - mention the word “Nevada” and we think of gambling in a desert.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut Florida is more complicated. It cannot be conveniently categorised or boxed. On the coast is Miami, with its tourist beaches, Art Deco, influencers, pop culture and Hispanic soul. Then up the road is Palm Beach with its genteel “Slim Aarons” high-society life of golf, tennis, bridge and cocktails.\nThe two communities could not be more different in culture and ethnicity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThey only have two things in common: favourable taxes and proximity to America’s Jurassic Park - an untamed territory that remains primeval and largely closed for business. The swamps of Florida were not made for human life, yet they sit within 30 miles of two of the most evolved and desirable places to live in the world. It is as stark a visual dislocation as there can be.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn no part of America does the price of real estate fall quicker than when travelling west from the Atlantic beaches of southern Florida. There are too many insects and far too many dangerous reptiles for sane mankind.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe emblematic beast of Florida is the alligator and for the 56,000 students at the University of Florida, life would be different if “Gators” did not exist. The big gators in the swamps are formidable adversaries.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis photograph was only captured after considerable research and conversations with those familiar with the location. The camera was controlled remotely, and no one was in danger during this project. Alligators are much more comfortable living in this part of Florida than humans will ever be.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIf Florida was fictional, we would laugh at its absurdity. The thunderstorms build in late October and this is also the time when the elephant herds can be at their biggest. They complement each other perfectly. In the craft of coupling powerful content with emotive aesthetics, this image is about as good as I can do. It’s taken me 30 odd years, but in crocodile years that is nothing. These monsters were around long before man and can live to 100 years old.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nBig crocs are not easy to capture in a way that conveys their enormity, their primeval menace or indeed their textural magnificence. But this image works and when I saw it in large size at the printers in LA, my heart skipped a beat. It has been worth the wait. I think we pushed a few boundaries here.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe picture was made as opposed to taken as I had a preconceived idea of what I was trying to do. The starting point was my acceptance that head on images of crocodiles struggle as there is never enough depth of field with a telephoto to do them justice. The teeth can be in focus, but then probably not their eyes and certainly not their back or tail. I don't like to have my focal point half way back in an image - it creates a tension point if the nearest point of a portrait is out of focus. A head on portrait fails to convey length and length is the key variable.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI kNew I needed to work at 90 degrees, with the croc perpendicular to the camera. I also wanted to be low and close and I wanted a big crocodile - why on earth photograph a small one? If almost all of the crocodile was the same distance from the camera, there could be a colossal amount of information in the image.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nOur research - and we did a great deal - led us to one place. The key was that the river had to be narrow, as for safety reasons I could not work from the same bank as a 12 foot crocodile - that could be my last assignment. The narrow Grumeti river in Tanzania offers chances and there is one 200-yard section with some enormous crocs on the south bank with a north bank just 20 yards away. The steep bank deters crocodiles on the north bank and that was what I needed to be able to work without fear and for the camera angle to be low. I needed to be at the same height as the croc - give or take a meter.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe image was taken late in the day and the angle of the late sun gave me every chance for a clean picture - almost all the background was in heavy shadow and three stops underexposed.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \n\nMy preoccupation as an artist is to be original and creative. We often fail and disappoint ourselves, but this photograph is kind of cool. I haven't really seen a similar image and we do put in the hours trawling the net. I had the right camera, the right lens and the right exposure. Phew!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThis scene could well have happened 10,000 BC - but we will never know. That photograph has now sold out and I was honoured that both Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese signed a copy which sold for $200,000 at Art Miami at the end of that year.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It was always our intention to do a sequel, but Covid put paid to that in 2020. However, the delay gave me time to consider various options for the story line and fine tune logistics. The unanimous choice for round two was to shoot the boat scene with the FBI agents.  For many it is the most memorable scene in the whole movie and of course there is intense competition for that top spot.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In May of this year we had an opportunity to shoot our sequel off the coast of Marina del Rey in Los Angeles.  I had so much more light to play with than in the dealing room shot and my instinct was to be bold in the amount of content I could include in one frame.  Indeed, I had to work on the basis that the one frame had to tell the full story, otherwise the job would not have been done properly.  This is one of the challenges of still photography.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Once we sourced our necessarily large yacht, I pondered intensely over the make up of the content and the composition of that content. The wolf would always be the centre stage, but the layered nature of the front of the boat offered my best chance of an expansive narrative around and behind the wolf.  My favoured shooting time was an hour before sunset and from mid afternoon I had built up an intricate story board in my mind.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e About 6.45pm out on the open sea, all the constituent parts came together and I think everyone involved should be proud of the role they played in creating the parody. I would contend that if any one of the constituents of the photograph was removed, the picture would be materially lessened. It needed the giant lobsters; the spray of the champagne; the FBI; the helicopter; both wolves and even the girl on the top deck.  Luckily they were all on board - this was not a day to have after thoughts.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e They say that the best pictures can be looked at for a long time. Well here we go. They are both legends in their respective careers, but their legacy may lie in what they have done to champion and support good causes helping others living less than ideal lives.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e For this shoot, I took the Seattle Seahawks quarterback and his wife to my favourite shooting location in the world - the Pioneer Bar - high up in the mountains of West Montana. I wanted to be in command of as much as possible and with my intimate knowledge of the location, I knew I could muster together a smorgasbord of western archetypes to complement the rock star American couple. I also know the lighting and the angles inside out. It was a home fixture for me.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e My preconception was to build a vignette that lived and breathed cinema whilst playing on the importance of cultural refinement in the Wild West. To that end, I thought it would be playful to dress Russell and Ciara in black tie so as to accentuate the narrative. Finding the extras was easy - they are mostly my drinking buddies.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e There are no weak characters in this shot; there is simply no room for them. In fashioning together so many ethnicities, I hope his photograph celebrates the diversity of America and reminds us that the pursuit of the American Dream was, and is, inclusive.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Revlon Ambassadors have been filmed in many locations, but perhaps none offer the storied past of the Pioneer Bar. Aside from establishing a very definitive sense of place, my key personal instruct was simplicity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBlessed with a beautiful black stallion and the aesthetic glory of this amphitheatre at sunrise, my sense was I really didn’t need to take things much further. Those with a visual sensibility have been drawn to this part of the world for 600 years.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy sole focus was achieving compositional balance and making sure I married the horse to the backdrop in the right size ratio. If there was a complexity, it was the tradeoff between proximity to the running stallion and my own personal safety. But his Roman trainer was so in control, I had no concerns.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eGladiator (2000) was nominated for 12 Oscars and won five. For many it remains a generational film and every day, tourists come to the Val d’Orcia pocket of Tuscany to have their little Russell Crowe fix. It was Crowe’s finest hour and meanwhile the cinematography team, led by John Mathieson, offered viewers a masterclass in the use of light.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLocation scouting is a key part of Ridley Scott’s formidable tool kit and the Val d’Orcia scenes in Gladiator stood out as much as any. There was little CGI in play here - what one saw on screen is what was there in reality - hence the appeal to tourists. The dissenting 2% may need to get off social media and do some more homework.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe built this 1920s oil boom town set in ranchland in West Texas and over a period of 48 hours I toyed with the most powerful layers of narrative. My default approach is to focus on the foreground and then let the background look after itself. A cattle herd brings dynamism, but also a lack of compositional control; the precise movement of the lead longhorns - even with the most skilled of cowboys - cannot be directed and therefore I am gambling.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDays like these can be frustrating as we are not in a studio and the light is changing all the time. There tends to be just a small timeframe in which the magic must happen. I don’t think there is a formula for success other than employing the very best people and then learning very quickly from mistakes on the day.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe feature closest to the camera is key; a weak first layer often kills a tableau like this. But on this occasion the lead longhorn is strong and glues the composition together. That, of course, is pure luck. This moment was one of those, as the polar bear was coming right towards me and carried a proper menace.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ePolar bears “pop” in an image more than any other mammal I know because of their white coats. If those white coats are then highlighted by sunlight, it can all be a bit much and visually it often does not work.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis photograph, which I took recently on the Alaskan North Slope, works, not only because of the murky weather, but also because the bear’s head position serves to highlight the bulk that comes behind it. This is a big boy and this was the very last frame I took before I had tomove. A ground up camera position is so important, but with that goes a need to always put safety first.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI was up in the arctic for a few days and took fewer than two dozen photographs. That’s the way it is up there. I opened the lens wide up to F2.8m to make everything in front of and behind the panther’s face out of focus. I think I had three inches of depth of field—just enough. The 45-degree early morning backlight left me with a balancing Iso of 500, which on the D850 is fine. I chose the D850 over the beast that is the D5, as I was happy to sacrifice frames per second for resolution.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThat is quite a technical narrative for this photograph, but the reality is that after the word emotion, I think the next most important word for a photographer is math. Photography may be an art long before it is a science, but math does matter.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI look at this photograph with the dust, the composition, the backlight, and the energy and I recognize that my skills as a photographer have improved with age. I make pictures rather than take them, and through failure I have a more refined understanding of what I need to do when I go to work. My camera was already filthy and in the seconds after this photograph was taken, it was covered in splash water. This all happened before 6.30 am and I was home and in a hot shower before breakfast.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is all about going the extra mile and doing all one can to be below the eyes of the cat and be in place before the sun gets too high. The rest is down to luck and a small bit of experience working in sports photography. Rather than working in the mountains with snow, as we often do, it was time to work in the desert with sand.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI knew my girl for the shot - Cara Delevingne - and I knew that the hugely respected Naankuse Sanctuary in Namibia often work their cheetahs with film crews, and then I also knew the Kanaan desert well. But I needed a central prop to hold the whole idea together. I needed something of substance.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI had long deliberated over building a bar marooned in the middle of the desert. Not just a two-dimensional facade of a bar, but an actual functioning bar, with lights, cooling machines and entertainment.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI confess that there was quite a bit of talking to myself about the risk reward ratio and I became all to mindful of Walt Disney’s famous advice of “stop talking and start doing”.  I like to have creative courage and be bold.    \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSo, I threw my fears away and we built our bar in the desert. It is so damn good that we are going to keep it there for tourists to visit and perhaps have a cold Namibian lager. It was not a small building job and six lorries full of wood and corrugated iron made the eight-hour trip south from Windhoek. I have never worked with a more willing bunch of people in my life than the Namibian production team and they had earned the right to be very proud of The Desert Inn.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn a tableau photograph like this, I want to be greedy and broaden the story: the barman and the bushman on the far right are the little details that help. So we planned our trip to the Smoky Mountains at the end of October, rather than the middle; we all know 10 days can make a huge difference in the colors of the fall.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt was wet, cold and a bit bleak but that is more appropriate weather for the scenes we were shooting than balmy sunshine. Flat light can be a photographer’s great friend in scenes like this, so long as the rain holds off.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe second addition was to bring in a horse and rider to run alongside the steam train. This is not a job for part time cowboys as the steam and the smoke from the train are uncertain variables for a horse. Ty Mitchell is an old hand at this kind of stuff; Martin Scorsese cast him as the bad guy in Killers of the Flower Moon and he is certainly a bad ass dude.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTy is as good and game as they come, but even he fell off his horse shooting this sequence; the first time I have seen him do that in our six-year friendship. Huge respect to him for just getting up and giving it another go.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe result is a strong picture with enough layers to tell a full story. I had props at my disposal for the concept to have potential, but the execution here was a little harder than most. So we planned our trip to the Smoky Mountains at the end of October, rather than the middle; we all know 10 days can make a huge difference in the colors of the fall.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt was wet, cold and a bit bleak but that is more appropriate weather for the scenes we were shooting than balmy sunshine. Flat light can be a photographer’s great friend in scenes like this, so long as the rain holds off.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe second addition was to bring in a horse and rider to run alongside the steam train. This is not a job for part time cowboys as the steam and the smoke from the train are uncertain variables for a horse. Ty Mitchell is an old hand at this kind of stuff; Martin Scorsese cast him as the bad guy in Killers of the Flower Moon and he is certainly a bad ass dude.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTy is as good and game as they come, but even he fell off his horse shooting this sequence; the first time I have seen him do that in our six-year friendship. Huge respect to him for just getting up and giving it another go.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe result is a strong picture with enough layers to tell a full story. I had props at my disposal for the concept to have potential, but the execution here was a little harder than most. A group of male bison charging through heavy snow, directly towards a camera is certainly a rare sight and it always seemed a bridge too far from almost every perspective. The question has always been where and how could this epic scene unfold in front of a camera?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eYellowstone National Park was never going to be the answer.  This sort of collective behaviour does not tend to happen in the park and if it did, there would be zero chance of being in the right place at the right time to film it. It is difficult to break new ground in Yellowstone.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 2020 an American artist, John Banovich, an exceptional talent and good friend, suggested that I approach Ted Turner to see if I could gain access to his stunning 180 square mile ranch - Flying D - saddling Yellowstone and neighbouring Big Sky. This remarkable place is nine times the size of Manhattan and showcases Montana at its most stunning best.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eJohn’s wonderful painting of a group of running bison adorns the wall of the main reception of the exclusive Yellowstone Club and he took his inspiration from spending time at Ted Turner’s ranch.  I recognised that this was a link worth pursuing. Flatteringly, a few months after my initial approach, the Turner team agreed to collaborate in the hope that we could raise money for Ted’s conservation initiatives.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTed Turner is one of America’s biggest landowners and also one of its most acclaimed conservationists and he reintroduced both bison and wolves into Flying D, one of his three Montana ranches. In mid-winter, his team of ranchers will herd some of the 5,000-resident bison into areas where feeding is easier and this controlled activity creates an opportunity to work a situation.  Just like cowboys herding their cattle in Texas, the skill sets of the Turner ranchers in deep snow are a privilege to watch.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe difficulty is that bison in this vast ranch are more skittish of humans on foot than their Yellowstone cousins, who see thousands of tourists every day.   I therefore needed either to be camouflaged or out of sight as they made haste in my direction. Luckily the Flying D team knew of a group of rocks behind which I would be obscured from the bison’s line of sight.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAfter many a failure, and some adjustments to the approach, one gorgeous winter morning in February, we achieved what we set out to do. The ferry crew, with an average age of 80, deserved to be fully rewarded for sailing the Bilfergen through the fjords in a snowstorm to meet me. Their journey lasted 12 hours.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe fjords in this area have grandeur and beauty and no more so than after the denouement of a meaningful winter storm. Norwegians are good in bad weather and we needed all their celebrated experience of working on icy roads to get the Porsche and its transit lorry through the mountains to the meet point in time. There is only about four hours of decent light at this time of year and time was critical.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe had a strong set of cards to play with that cold morning, but I needed to prioritise the conveyance of a sense of place without losing the currency of having such powerful props. The solution to the puzzle, which we had anticipated, was to film in the middle of the fjord from the deck of another boat of similar height. If I could get very close to the ferry and use a wide-angle lens, I could get the compositional balance that I was striving for.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe most credit for this photograph should go to The Girl on the Ferry - Nadine Leopold - who did an excellent job of looking warm and graceful on a cold winter’s morning. The solution to the puzzle, which we had anticipated, was to film in the middle of the fjord from the deck of another boat of similar height. It was unusual in that gaining membership did not afford access to golf, tennis, pickleball or even a swimming pool with lunchtime dining. The reason is that Carriage House only opens when it is dark outside. The sport is in the cocktail bar.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI was invited by some kind members before Christmas and it struck me as a very promising concept. Drinking is encouraged and, on balance, the men seemed to be slightly older than the women.  Perhaps by a generation. There is unity in the sartorial elegance but a whiff of mischief to the whole place. The dress code is stricter than the behaviour code.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere are a few old dogs knocking around for joint and they come with some history for sure, but that seems to matter little. I have only ever photographed the facade of this bar in the middle of the night - it just seems the right option. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOn this occasion, my creative leaning was to tell a 1970s music story with the nighttime facade of the bar as my backdrop.  After all, little has changed here since the 1970s and this is a music venue first and foremost.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Vw bus was an obvious starting prop, but perhaps less likely was my choice of band leader - the American sporting icon - John McEnroe.  John is a passionate guitarist, so I knew this role would appeal to his forever engaged mind.  He was also something of a cowboy when it came to showing deference to authority in the tennis world. John brought the Wild West to Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows, so it was a natural fit at several levels.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI believe that my Jackson 4 caught the right vibe that night and the falling snow adds to the sense of place. I would imagine that back in the day many cowboys would have paid good money to swap with John and be on the road with these girls. There are, however, more cowboy hats here than in a Parisian cafe.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe lead feature of the saloon is a neon illuminated winding bar which incorporates over 2,000 silver dollar coins into its resin surface - it’s part disco, part Lonesome Dove and it should not work aesthetically and yet it emphatically does. I had this lighting in mind in the few days before I took this photograph in the mountains of Wyoming.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe concept was to build a saloon that looked marooned in the middle of nowhere and in so doing play to the vastness and emptiness of the Wild West. I sensed that half an hour before dusk would allow the lanterns in the old saloon to glow a little whilst also having enough daylight to tell an outdoor narrative. 30 minutes either side of then and it would be suboptimal.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHollywood has long cast Westerns with a deeply masculine skew - almost to the point of parody. Therein lies an opportunity, because women must have been an integral part of the push West and I like to celebrate powerful women in my stories.
