There tend to be just 3 or 4 iconic images that transcend the overall body of work, that will always be remembered. It is these 3 or 4 shots that define a career.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI am not sure where my career will take me and I am not sure whether I have taken an iconic image yet - I will let others decide. But I do know that this photograph, which has been unveiled today as part of the Tag Heuer Don't Crack under Pressure campaign is probably the most powerful shot that I have ever taken. Yes, it was a commercial shoot with one of the world’s most famous women, but I think it goes beyond that and the image will be coveted by collectors. It grabs the eye and then holds it in a vice-like grip. Everything about the work is viscerally powerful.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI look back on that day with great emotion and there are so many people to thank. None more so than the British icon that is Cara Delevingne She is - of course - stunning, but she is also authentic and intelligent and couples this with admirable work ethic. Furthermore, on this day, she was incredibly brave and fittingly did not “crack under pressure”. This image is not manipulated - there were 5 yards between her and the lion. At no stage did she show tension or anxiety and that made my job so much easier.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nI think a key to the image was the reasonably powerful directional late afternoon sunlight, as the shadows on both Cara and the lion are so consistent that the authenticity of the image cannot be questioned. In the morning, the light was flatter and therefore the lion and Cara were not as visually linked as they are here.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \n\nThis campaign would not have been possible without the help of Kevin Richardson in South Africa and I thank him for the awareness he brings to the plight of the lion in Africa. After all, there are many other weathered saloons in the West. We don’t want to be repetitive in our story telling.  That would be lame.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEqually, for our work, The Pioneer is emphatically the best bar known to us.  It has depth and the wagon wheel on the ceiling is ideally positioned. More importantly, it is home turf for us and last year I was honoured to receive “The Freedom of the City”.  I have the key in my briefcase. The owner of The Pioneer partners with us rather than simply permiting us and that is a material difference. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut when we go back each winter, it is important to bring a new variable to offer the chance of an image that can transcend.  There is no point going backwards. My new variable this time was Cara Delevingne and her established team of stylists and hair and make-up artists. To bring such a celebrated and relevant woman as Cara to Montana is fresh ground.  Put her in front of the Eiffel Tower and it is a new look on the Eiffel Tower.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI gave her team a directive for this shot: bad ass; sexy; sovereign; 1920s but still very much Cara. They absolutely nailed it, as did she.  The hat made a huge difference. I can’t think of any other woman in the world I would prefer to play this role.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThese are not easy images to execute as there is such limited light.  Depth of field and shutter speeds are therefore compromised. Cara would always be sharp - that was easy - then we had to hope for some luck elsewhere.  Cameras have improved so much over the years in terms of ability to work in low light.  I could not have done this 10 years ago. She can do this as easily as some people flick a switch.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eChief John Spotted Tail of the Lakota tribe was an excellent foil for Cara and they work well together. He is revered locally and it was an honour to have him on set. He brings a further edge to an image encapsulating my read on the old Wild West: a place of guns; trouble in hard drinking saloons; occasional bad weather and maverick characters. No wonder Westerns have a film genre to themselves - it is too rich a seam in the material to have to share a category with anything else. It now lies abandoned in the ghost town of Nevada City and serves as a reminder of the busier days in the mountains. At today’s value, when mining came to an end in 1922, some $2.5bn of gold had been extracted from the region. The state of Montana played an integral part in Gold Rush history.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI first visited the train in 2015 and immediately saw its potential for a staged shot. Half the window areas are open to the elements and in the winter the snow often overwhelms the decaying interior. In the following years we took a few pictures but, in many ways, these were a dress rehearsal for November 2020. We knew our light and our angles.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTaking the female icon Cara Delevingne to a unique site like this, so far from anywhere vaguely on the map, was an opportunity not to be wasted. This is not a job for the precious, the carriage is fragile and getting on board was not easy. But Cara, as I know from working with her previously, is not precious, she is game for anything that is creative and authentic.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe camera loves her and the styling - in an old buffalo skin coat - deliberately plays to a timeless story. She pings out of the train.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSometimes an artist creates something that can’t be copied and I think this is one such work. An imposing vertical cliff face bullies main street and adds to the sense of ‘a town at the end of the line’. Creede plays to the lore and mythology of the wild west and consequently is awash with tourists during the summer. However, in the mid-winter, the place has an abandoned look to it and this was always going to be the best time to film. It would be a bridge too far to try to close the town down in July.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e We had been throwing around ideas as to where to stage a Bonnie and Clyde story and chose Creede, not just because the high street is little changed from the 1920s, but because the locals, including the sheriff and the council, were fully supportive of our concept. To a man, the town folk of Creede were committed to helping us bring the project to fruition. For two days, our crew and extras seemingly doubled the winter population of Creede and the one restaurant in town was at capacity most of the time.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Fine tuning the composition was a challenge as ideally, I wanted Bonnie - played by Cara Delevingne - to be as big a part of the image as possible, but I also needed the buildings on both sides of the street to frame the narrative in the middle. Working with wide angle lenses risks making a loose image and I was determined not to fall into that trap. We had not dragged everyone up to this cold final frontier outpost to create a mundane image.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e My goal was to create one single vignette to emphatically celebrate the heavily mythologised story of Bonnie and Clyde. It therefore had to be rich enough to inform, whilst remaining simple and cinematic. The final result is a great credit to all involved - Cara, her team, my production team and the many extras.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Faye Dunaway played Bonnie in the original film and she was my reference for Cara, who played the role immaculately, as I knew she would. I liked the idea of building some final frontier sets but that in itself is hardly groundbreaking. Sure, we gave the saloon a name that referred to Montana’s celebrity guests, but that did not quench my thirst. This was an opportunity to push a few boundaries.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Ultimately three decisions coalesced to make the difference and turn an idea into something of which we are all proud. The first was the styling: we hired for Ciara the best we know - Mariel Haenn and her partner Rob Zangardi, in La. Mariel styles Cara Delevingne and so works with us regularly. I gave her team a simple directive - “post-Civil War badass”. Mariel and Rob don’t need much more than that and Ciara looks ridiculously good and on point. Russell’s stylist, Alicia Sereno, did a first-class job of making Russell look every bit as badass as Ciara. They both owned their looks. The second call was to shoot in a rainstorm - an unrelenting one. As a storyteller, I have always enjoyed inclement weather, but I knew we would have to make the rain, not ask Russell and Ciara to wait for a storm mid-summer. I studied the rain scenes from Paul Greengrass’s recent western - News of the World - with Tom Hanks and the effect added such mood and textural detail to Hanks’ face and clothes that I could not remove the prompt from my head. To use rain in this shot was a good decision.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The third decision was, of course, to set the building on fire. This is not an easy thing to do from a practical perspective and it meant shooting at night to make the most of the effect. But again, the decision paid off - perhaps a little better than we could have imagined.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Russell and Ciara make for strong doubles for Jamie Foxx and Kerry Washington in Tarantino’s bad ass western “Django Unchained”. On this one occasion, I believe that I can get away with the reference, albeit Django burnt down a plantation mansion in Mississippi, not a saloon on the banks of the Madison River in Montana. I must have watched Gladiator at least 20 times, but there is one Ridley Scott movie that has prompted me in my work more than any other and that, of course, is Thelma \u0026amp; Louise, which inspired the location to tell our own road trip story.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Ridley’s camera dived into the pages of a road trip storybook and coupled vivid cinematography with a character rich narrative. At all times he showed that he was fully in command of his medium and in so doing reminded us of the grandeur and majesty of the American West.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e His vignettes of Arches National Park in Utah were shot with picturesque sentimentality and were the defining moments of the film. I have long wished to shoot there, but out of respect for him, I knew my narrative could not be lame.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Cara Delevingne and I work together regularly these days, and I knew there could be no more powerful lead in this story.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The rest was up to good fortune and in particular the light. We shot in early March when we could secure road permits by the iconic organ rock which features in the film. But the weather had to play ball and the forecast the previous night looked unpromising. However, at 7.10 am the next day, there was a shaft of full on light and we had our moment.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Cara smashed it - but always does. Cara is unique. The frame is as good as we can do and the reward for many hours of negotiation and contemplation. Leadville is America’s highest town and, like many old Colorado mining towns high in the mountains, it has largely escaped modernity and is all the better for it. This is a working town that doubles up inadvertently as a one stop film set. To walk down the main street is to enter the world of Taylor Sheridan.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The saloon proudly declares the date of its birth on the outside – 1879 - and my idea was to go forward 100 years to the 1970s when the famous Colorado ski resorts near Leadville such as Vail and Aspen were gaining traction with the stars of Hollywood. I wanted to pair 1970s ski fashion with what remains of the final frontier and see how the union played out. My sense was that the glamour could be accentuated by the contrast with what sat behind.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I had a card in my hand in having my fellow Brit, Cara Delevingne, as my muse and with Cara almost anything is possible. She is one the world’s leading models for good reason and styling her is a joy not a chore. The final photograph is elevated by the snow and the snowfall. Falling snow adds another character into a still image for free and on that freezing Monday morning the intensity of the falling snow was just about right. Too heavy a snow fall can create trouble, but we were not compromised visually that day - which was lucky.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I am sure someone at some stage has taken a picture like this outside the Silver Dollar Saloon, but I have yet to see it, so perhaps we got there first with this idea. It is not that enlightened, after all, there must have been many women involved in the push west otherwise we would have had a birth problem at a time of above average mortality.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e My sense is that the women who ran saloons like the Silver Dollar Saloon, 10,000 feet up in the Rocky Mountain of Colorado would have been tough, uncompromising characters, who dealt with every conceivable issue with steely resourcefulness. Their daily routine would not have been compromised by drunken fights, troublesome prostitutes, crippling snowstorms or even the occasional shoot out. Far from being exposed, they would have dealt with these minor adversities with a wry but steely smile. They bossed the saloon and its patronage seven days a week.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Cara Delevingne was made to play the character of a landlady – she is sassy and hardened, as well, ofcourse, as being one of the most celebrated models of her generation. When I took her out in this snowstorm in Leadville - America’s highest town - at minus 15 degrees, I might as well have been taking her for breakfast at Tiffany’s. That is just one of the qualities that makes her a very special person. She wears her sovereignty with a light touch.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I think the Silver Dollar Saloon - founded in 1879 - is one of the most authentic wild west bars in America and we were lucky to be there with Cara as a storm rolled through. Birmingham in the Uk became known around the world for what it was portrayed to be like 100 years ago rather than what it is like now. That’s quite a trick.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e My creative leaning was to twist the narrative a little. Cillian Murphy owned every scene in the series with a mesmerising intensity, but what if the leader of the gang was a woman? Most of the women in the series were depicted either as objects of lust or familial loyalty rather than necessarily agents of their own destiny. They faded into the scenery as often happens in mobster shows.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In my mindset there was only one girl to do this job - the irrepressible force of nature that is Cara Delevingne. She owns this scene, just as Cillian did in the series, and that says it all. She is a national treasure and we are lucky to work with her as often as we do. As I often say to those that ask, “It’s her eyes”.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e There was a big cast that day and everyone played their role. It only takes one person to kill the vibe and that evening everyone did a grand Peaky Blinders job. She has too powerful a look to be relegated to the role of a contextual extra, but equally, the Durango Steam train in winter is one of the great props a storytelling photographer can have. In scouting the journey the day after an intense snowstorm, I found a spot that I thought could offer a balance; I would just need Cara to be strong and sure footed on the banks of a river in a huge amount of fresh snow.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e There is a confident swagger to her and my best narrative was that she could be celebrating a robbery before it had even occurred - hence the cigar in her mouth. She can smoke a cigar like the best gambler in Vegas.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It was a cold afternoon that day.  This was no studio and as always, it was an honour to work with Cara, she is one of the very best in the business. There is nothing more disappointing than to creatively underwhelm, particularly in my home city. We can hardly plant a well-known figure in front of Trafalgar Square and suggest it’s art, and I pondered over this puzzle for many weeks.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Ultimately my instincts were to go back in time and play to the lore of London’s past. We iterated and iterated and decided to play on the gritty London of the post war 1920s. Within the tight vortex of an unmodernised narrow London street, we could then throw on to the stage as many nods to the era as possible.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The historic dockyards of Chatham offer a strong visual canvas on which to tell stories and I sensed that if we played with the ambient light of the early evening and married that with old London streetlights, we had a platform to build on.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It’s a bit like making Christmas lunch - all the constituent parts must coalesce with each other and elevate the final offering. I had a strong inclination to introduce smoke; it adds another cinematic layer whether that smoke comes from a car exhaust or a chimney.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This roaring twenties in the Uk saw material advances in technology and science, but it will also be remembered as a decade when women found equality and their sexuality was celebrated. It was an era where grit and glamour forged an unlikely alchemy. Choosing iconic British supermodel and actress Cara Delevingne - a quintessential London girl - as my lead was one of the easier decisions of my career. Meanwhile, David Gandy is my favourite male lead to work with in the world - he always nails it and gives his all. It was a very London day and we were honoured to work with the best leads that London can offer. I want to exaggerate not dumb things down as that helps the storyteller. In a staged image such as this, there is no need to ask permission to be creative; in fact, it is a necessary precondition.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCara Delevingne’s face is so strong and powerful that I knew there was no room for another girl on her same focal plane, but there would be room for a black wolf and then a menacing poker player. It is so damn good that we are going to keep it there for tourists to visit and perhaps have a cold Namibian lager. The wind had also left new textural patterns in the sand. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The positioning of Cara and the cheetah on the ridge of the dunes lends a pleasing compositional balance to the picture.  It was not all down to fortune and I could not have done this without the help of the Naankuse team in Namibia and in particular Rudi and Marlice Van Vuuren. It also helps that I know the dunes well; any filmmaker must make decisions quickly at sunrise in the desert. It was a nice idea and there were some eye-catching visual contrasts in the collection. But telephone kiosks do not tend to play host to people of disposable moral fibre, whereas pool lounges largely do and that is why a pool table is such a good prop; it smacks of the possibility of trouble.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI think if there was a book of pool table images playing to the lore of a sketchy saloon, this photograph would stand a good chance of being front cover. Who could possibly refuse an invitation for a drink and a game of pool at this bar? It has everything you need, including that vague hint of vice.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCara Delevingne is so much more than just a supermodel. She is a generational talent and a force of nature. In 2024 she played Sally Bowles in Cabaret for a good 10 weeks in the West End. One critic said she played the role as well as Liza Minnelli in the 1971 movie of the same name. The camera angle allows the viewer to explore inside our bar and the picture is all the better for that.  It is a proper desert bar, two hours from anywhere of note.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI remember once looking at a book featuring telephone kiosks in unusual places around the world.  It was a nice idea and there were some eye-catching visual contrasts in the collection. But telephone kiosks do not tend to play host to people of disposable moral fibre, whereas pool lounges largely do and that is why a pool table is such a good prop; it smacks of the possibility of trouble.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI think if there was a book of pool table images playing to the lore of a sketchy saloon, this photograph would stand a good chance of being front cover. Who could possibly refuse an invitation for a drink and a game of pool at this bar? It has everything you need, including that vague hint of vice.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCara Delevingne is so much more than just a supermodel. She is a generational talent and a force of nature. In 2024 she played Sally Bowles in Cabaret for a good 10 weeks in the West End. One critic said she played the role as well as Liza Minnelli in the 1971 movie of the same name. We have taken our fair share of bad ass pictures of girls in cars in America, but I always wanted to extend my reach to Africa and introduce a Mad Max type narrative. Rather than working in the mountains with snow, as we often do, it was time to work in the desert with sand.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI knew my girl for the shot - Cara Delevingne - and I knew that the hugely respected Naankuse Sanctuary in Namibia often work their cheetahs with film crews, and then I also knew the Kanaan desert well. But I needed a central prop to hold the whole idea together. I needed something of substance.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI had long deliberated over building a bar marooned in the middle of the desert. Not just a two-dimensional facade of a bar, but an actual functioning bar, with lights, cooling machines and entertainment.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI confess that there was quite a bit of talking to myself about the risk reward ratio and I became all to mindful of Walt Disney’s famous advice of “stop talking and start doing”.  I like to have creative courage and be bold.    \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSo, I threw my fears away and we built our bar in the desert. It is so damn good that we are going to keep it there for tourists to visit and perhaps have a cold Namibian lager. It was not a small building job and six lorries full of wood and corrugated iron made the eight-hour trip south from Windhoek. I have never worked with a more willing bunch of people in my life than the Namibian production team and they had earned the right to be very proud of The Desert Inn.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn a tableau photograph like this, I want to be greedy and broaden the story: the barman and the bushman on the far right are the little details that help.
