It has hosted outlaws, bounty hunters, cattle wranglers, fur trappers, snake oil salesmen, gold prospectors, loan sharks and presumably many working ladies. More recently we have escorted in the finer things in life like Cindy Crawford and Paris Hilton and a few wolves, some horses and indeed a bear.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut in the summer of 2026, we brought in the Pioneer’s most sizable patron ever - an adult bison. These beasts carry 12 times the weight of an average human being and the ancient old floorboards stood the test well. He seemed totally comfortable with the surroundings but wished, like the rest of us, that the walls could talk. That would be a treat.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBison of course survived an ice age or two, whereas many humans have not survived a night at the Pioneer. As a frontier town, Virginia City seemed to attract people with a weak moral compass and a capacity for violence; this is what makes the place more notorious. In 2026 a modicum of order has been established and all is good and calm - most of the time.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe are proud that across the road from the Pioneer there is now a museum of our work from both Virginia City, neighboring Nevada City, and indeed other parts of Western Montana. If you happen to be in the area, please go into the museum and say hello to our dear friends Rozy and Stacy and enjoy a drink on me. It’s a watering hole anchored in a picture postcard setting that is all big skies, big mountains and big Marlboro Men.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhilst the bar has an outdoor agenda with a stage and music concerts, its inside has the character you would expect from a project that began in 1900. In particular, I was drawn to the wallpaper that wraps the main area.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhilst there is no immediate evidence, I feel safe with my assertion that over the years blood has been sponged off these walls - it is faded and discolored and in these loosely governed parts of the wild west, I can’t imagine that there hasn't been the odd showdown. It is the sort of bar that the Coen Brothers are drawn to in their giddy western revisionism. It is basic and most certainly marooned on the final frontier. The nearest sheriff is a long way away and that can be a problem.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt was with these thoughts that I composed this scene. My leaning is always towards parody and, given the number of bison in and around both Paradise Valley and the nearby Yellowstone National Park, it seemed entirely reasonable that one of these enormous mammals would have been curious enough to check out The Old Saloon.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHad such an occasion indeed ocurred, I sensed that the battle-weary clientele would be entirely unfazed; it would just be another night in a saloon that serves a nihilistic community. In my story, I sensed that this has been a place where it has paid to be tough and where bad intentions were not unusual. When fully grown, it is a massive beast that deserves our respect and recognition.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nWhen I was researching bison earlier this year, I quickly understood two things – firstly that some rogue bulls carry a serious threat if their space is invaded and secondly that the adult face is both prehistoric and enormous. The bison is all about the face and I sensed that any picture that didn’t recognise this, would miss my goals. My instincts were that the image also needed a sense of “Yellowstone in the winter” and this, combined with the need for proximity, all pointed to a ground level, remote control approach.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nTo work with ground level radio controlled cameras and a prime wide angle is very much my signature style, but it is easier with elephants in Amboseli, than bison in Yellowstone. This is not an easy location – our guide suggested that 95% of Yellowstone is out of bounds in winter. It is the most geothermally active park in the world, throw avalanches, wolves and bears into the mix and we have a primordial soup of creation.\nI failed about 10 times with my camera positioning and I tweaked my lens\/camera combination constantly. It was most frustrating and I was generally grumpy. But on the third day at about 2 pm, it all came together. The trees and the sky are most helpful additives – but what a face and what a back structure. I haven’t seen this sort of image of a big bison before.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nI would like to thank Tom Murphy, one of America’s most acclaimed nature photographers, for assisting me on this assignment. We were both frustrated by the milder weather at the start of the week, but his knowledge and fireside tales of the area kept the spirits up. Based in the town of Ingomar, Montana (population 12), it is a long way from anywhere. In fact, there is no store or fuel within a 45-minute drive north, south, east or west. It truly is the “last chance saloon”. My fixer in Montana spoke to the owner - a cowboy rather splendidly called “Boots” - and he agreed that we could use the interior and exterior for filming on a Monday and Tuesday in the early summer - when the bar itself would normally be closed. Permits were also secured with the local authorities to allow us to film in the bar with a tame bear. I did a reconnaissance the previous Saturday - a good three-hour round trip from Billings, Montana - to check the light and the bar’s interior. It was clear that there was potential to tell a “wild west” story, but equally I would have very little depth of field in any photograph I took - the window light was okay, but not overly generous. I was drawn to the number of animal heads on the wall and in particular the massive bison in the top corner seemed a great prop to play with, albeit I needed a composition to show it off.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nRoxanna Redfoot from Dallas, Texas is a star - she is smart, as well as striking and can play any character role. On this occasion, her role was within her comfort zone - a sassy and smokingly sexy saloon bar maid with a no-nonsense approach to over eager customers. The customer, Adam - a 1000 lb brown bear - is not normally aggressive but working with him is far from easy - as he does not speak English. Roxanna showed no anxiety and was theatrical and focused from start to finish. Her eyes had to tell a story. For my part, I had a preconception and an image in my head. It was vital to me that both the bear’s head and Roxy’s head had to be equidistant from my camera lens - which probably meant that they had to be looking at each other. I kNew that we would have a limited window of opportunity as Adam was not going to play the role for long - he gets bored easily. Luckily the rabbit behind the bar kept him focused for longer than I expected. The vast majority of shots did not work for one reason or another - my focus, the bear’s head position or the interaction between the two characters. But this one image is a gem. The most famous spot of all is, of course, Pride Rock of “Lion King” fame.  For the 2019 remake, the Disney crew spent eight weeks filming in Borana - quite an investment of time for an animated film. In 2019, I also shot the New Land Rover Defender against this backdrop - it is a filmmaker’s el dorado.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe ecosystem has it all - elephants, rhino, lion, giraffe, horses and huge herds of buffalo.  But it was also traditional Kenyan farming land and white Kenyans dominate the social scene in the conservancy which has now merged with adjacent Lewa.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \n\nIn 2007, the Dyer farming family made a decision to commit all retained earnings from commercial activities on Borana to support the increased costs of conservation. Borana and Lewa together now boast the most successful rhino conservancy in Kenya. Poaching is a thing of the past in this part of Kenya and much of the credit belongs to second and third generation farming families like the Dyers and the Craigs in Lewa, who know what they are talking about.  As I grow older, I recognise the importance of knowing what I am talking about.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe success of Kenyan farmers in Borana brought New residents from Europe and even more horses. But not just any horses - champion racehorses. To photograph them at altitude in Borana was a great thrill - their muscled bodies set against the plains below offer the artist every chance.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e  \n\nI want to thank Michael Spencer for all his support and help over the years. No man knows more about old colonial Africa and no man has given back more - it is integral to his soul to be loyal to his roots and in Borana he has found his spiritual home. The steam from the thermal activity freezes on whatever it can - including the big bisons that gravitate there to keep warm. I have waited for a very cold day like yesterday in Yellowstone for a long time, but looking at me this morning I have certainly paid the price.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This kind of photography may test one's appetite to work in extreme conditions, but it also tests our maths. I have never taken a photograph of anything on an aperture of F18 before, but I did yesterday as I wanted as much depth of focus as possible. My inclination was to be greedy and to try and have the bison’s nose in focus and also her eyes. So I sacrificed shutter speed and resolution and hoped for the best. It was impossible to check too much in the field, but when we returned home, I found one gem. I hope she is feeling better than me today. There was no access for man nor animal and we used to just drive past and look at what we could see of the decaying village. But recently the weather and Covid 19 have taken hold and the deterioration appears to have markedly accelerated. Most significantly, the fencing has fallen apart and animals have taken over the facility. Buffalos are inside bedrooms and zebra graze on the football pitch.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I immediately saw a huge opportunity to make a picture, but for the ultimate visual disconnect, we needed to wait for an elephant family to pass through main street. For three days, nothing and then at 7.30am one bright morning, with Kilimanjaro towering above the ruins, it happened. I could barely contain my excitement at the narrative that was being created.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The end result is an authentic and symbolic image. The lead female cuts a powerful and dominant figure. I wonder whether this scene portends to what one day may come to pass. To be greeted by an overtly territorial crew with menace and attitude.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e But for the story to work, two things had to coalesce as one - the characters and the interior. I like playing with the cold, it adds a visceral layer to the story and in this case, it hints at an outpost on the final frontier. Surely the further off the beaten track we travel, the greater the chance of being the outsider.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This is a frame that exhausts every inch available in the camera and that was my intent. There were so many characters I wanted to include, but I was also reluctant to lose the mood of the frozen saloon. The icicles on the frosty bison with the snow laden television playing True Grit were key assets that needed to be seen to amplify the sense of cold.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Our key asset was, of course, Cindy Crawford and she had to have sovereignty of the joint. She can play a badass very well and that was her ascribed role. It is not easy for everything to come together in such a tight setting as one tension spot can ruin the whole pastiche. It’s akin to camels and the eye of the needle. The wolf ’s paw on this occasion came very close to Cindy’s shot glass, but we got away with it.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The wolf is actually a domestic dog breed called tamaskan - he is not 100% wolf, but that mattered little, as he merely added to the sense of trespass. The only reason to linger in this bar would appear to be the landlady. Maybe she could be won over? The state of Montana played an integral part in Gold Rush history.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI first visited the train in 2015 and immediately saw its potential for a staged shot. Half the window areas are open to the elements and in the winter the snow often overwhelms the decaying interior. In the following years we took a few pictures but, in many ways, these were a dress rehearsal for November 2020. We knew our light and our angles.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTaking the female icon Cara Delevingne to a unique site like this, so far from anywhere vaguely on the map, was an opportunity not to be wasted. This is not a job for the precious, the carriage is fragile and getting on board was not easy. But Cara, as I know from working with her previously, is not precious, she is game for anything that is creative and authentic.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe camera loves her and the styling - in an old buffalo skin coat - deliberately plays to a timeless story. Big bull bison in the snow as a starting concept is appealing as they are primeval beasts that survived an ice age and portraits work best when their faces look like monsters from Game of Thrones.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nWhen working in heavy snowfall, there is a need to be as close to the subject as possible so as to reduce the number of snowflakes hitting the line of path between the camera and the subject. Too much and the whole thing becomes a little too abstract.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nIt is not permitted to be within 25 metres of a bison in Yellowstone and this rule is often enforced in a charmless and dictatorial way. There is actually a prison at the north entrance in Yellowstone and visitors are left in little doubt that transgressions within the park could lead to the transgressor serving time.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThat morning in early January 2020, I did not have a measuring tape with me, but I guess I was as close as I could be and maybe a little more. But I was on my own - clearly no one else was daft enough to be out there in that storm just after sunrise. I think the amount of snow detail between the camera and the bison adds to the mood of the image. The river detail behind lends to the power of the image as it gives an emphatic sense of place and season. This proximity came from a combination of my experience of bison movement and fluency in the use of remote control cameras. This is not something people should try in Yellowstone without a good guide and extreme caution.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The second bonus is simply the position of the bison’s head. The big males do resemble beasts from some sort of fantasy production and the lower the camera is relative to the head, the more the sense of an encounter with a creature from another world is amplified. This looks like an animal from a different planet - something “Throners” would expect to see “North of the Wall”. No other mammal on the planet looks more like a monster than a male bison in the winter.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The third helpful variable is his front left leg suggests movement towards me and that is fortunate as bison can often be stagnant when they are feeding. This picture has the dynamism we often seek.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e We took this picture so early in the day that no one else was in Yellowstone National Park. We left the park when the tourists were arriving. Setting the remote up was not that challenging as the massive bull was some distance from me at the time, but we then had to hope that we’d got both the maths and the bison’s direction of travel right. But this was down to luck more than judgement and this one image is perhaps the reward for the multiple of times we have failed. It is moments like these that offer the reason for using remotes, rather than just playing it simple and working with a telephoto.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e To me this photograph just shouts “Yellowstone”, America’s oldest National Park and one that in winter is an artist’s dream. There is simply no place like it on earth. I recognised that this was a link worth pursuing. Flatteringly, a few months after my initial approach, the Turner team agreed to collaborate in the hope that we could raise money for Ted’s conservation initiatives.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Ted Turner is one of America’s biggest landowners and also one of its most acclaimed conservationists and he reintroduced both bison and wolves into Flying D, one of his three Montana ranches. In mid-winter, his team of ranchers will herd some of the 5,000-resident bison into areas where feeding is easier and this controlled activity creates an opportunity to work a situation.  Just like cowboys herding their cattle in Texas, the skill sets of the Turner ranchers in deep snow are a privilege to watch.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The difficulty is that bison in this vast ranch are more skittish of humans on foot than their Yellowstone cousins, who see thousands of tourists every day. I first tried near the tiny airport base of Kangerlussuaq in Greenland but was never able to get within 200 yards. Then I tried in Dovrefjell, Norway where some of the most acclaimed winter filming work has been done with the species. I did better, but again, on my visit, proximity was a real issue.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Our desk research finally led us to the Yukon in Northern Canada where there seemed to be more practical opportunities. In conjunction with local conservationists, we worked on a plan to allow me to film from the floor of a four-wheel drive jeep, powerful enough to navigate the snow caked terrain. There was no chance of me getting out of the car with these beasts, they have charged and killed photographers in the past.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e My wish was to work in a snowfall to add to the sense of winter and in so doing glorify the musk ox’s toughness. This is not a portrait for the summer; we are emphatically north of the Wall in Game of Thrones. During my first 48 hours in the Yukon, there was no snowfall, so I merely observed and plotted.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e When caked in snow, as was the case that one snowy morning in the arctic Canada, they look like medieval monsters of the north. Or maybe this would indeed be the first sight we see when entering Hell’s Kitchen. Hopefully we will never find out, but in the meantime, I am fond of this vignette as it prompts me to celebrate the extraordinary world in which we live. Previously, they resided in the woodlands north and west of the Great Lakes, but pressure from British traders pushed them west. They eventually acquired firearms and horses and became a formidable example of the classic Plains Indian culture.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Ravaged by smallpox and constantly struggling with the challenges of extreme winters, low bison numbers and relative isolation, the Blackfeet had great fortitude and are often now referred to as the “Real People” of Montana.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The Blackfeet’s tribal headquarters are in the town of Browning in the extreme North West corner of the state. The celebrated Glacier National Park may sit to the west and with it comes smart resorts like Whitefish, but Browning has little refinement - it is a grim and remote frontier town that is avoided by most travellers. It’s all a bit sketchy up there - especially in the winter.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e However, within 20 minutes of Browning, the Blackfeet enjoy some of the most majestic scenery in America, and it was this that drew me to the location. It was always going to be a winter shoot, as the snow added in another character for free. So in January 2023, we made the road trip north from Bozeman - it’s a long way, and the sense of adventure intensifies towards the Canadian border. This is a remote and isolated corner of America, and relative to other reservations in the Us, I sense that filmmakers have had a light footprint around Browning.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The tribal elder, Dutch Lunak and his horse Rain Man make for a powerful combination. The Blackfeet take the greatest joy in celebrating their heritage, and Dutch wears his look well. I wanted a face that conveyed dignity, wisdom and sovereignty, and I think he gave me all three.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e On the way home from Browning, Dutch took us to his favourite saloon in the village of Dupuyer (census population 86). I was visually drawn to the two-tiered structure and the staircase connecting one to the other and I knew it could offer another layer in which to tell a story of life in a wild west bar.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I don’t think I am saying anything original when I say that focus is the key word in the vernacular of photography. Focus should deliberately include or it should deliberately exclude . When working in minimal light conditions like this old saloon, the starting premise is to know that 90% of the frame will be out of focus and to be excited rather than worried about it. It is an advantage not a disadvantage.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I think this photograph is made by the very limited depth of field not hampered by it. The cowboys in the back are pivotal to the story, but they can have anonymity as they are contextual. Meanwhile the girls and the wolf must be sharp as they lead the story. That was the hard bit, as the wolf has a spring in his step.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The two saloon girls were directed to have a look of menace and that’s exactly what they gave me. It’s difficult to play that look and keep your femininity and hats off to Brooks Nader and Holly Graves. It was not just the speed of change that distinguished Telluride from other resorts, it was the fact that mining and skiing, for a brief period, coexisted.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The relative isolation of Telluride delayed the introduction of skiing until 1972, but remarkably, in those bohemian days of hipsters and freewheeling hedonists, the mines of Telluride remained operational. The visual contrast between the old timers and the new generation must have been stark at every level.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The mines have long since closed, and Telluride is now a second home for many Americans who love the grandeur of the mountains and the isolation and the understated charm of a fabled town. But perhaps what is most special about this place is that it was only recently that two subcultures united to make one and there is therefore a sense that the Dna and vibe of the town is entirely unique. It does not pay to have an elitist attitude or look down on people in this town: it is open to all.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The photograph was taken in Schmidt Ranch - the same destination that Quentin Tarantino shot his western masterpiece - The Hateful Eight. These type of immersive, ground up photographs are only possible when working in collaboration with seasoned ranchers and we would not recommend this angle of view in most bison situations. They are unpredictable animals and when spooked, they can be deadly.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I like to convey size and scale in all that I do. I always feel a need to communicate clearly whatever the subject and this approach is embedded in the creative processing.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This adult male bison weighs over 1000kgs - so about the same weight as 10 American footballers together. To have a cold morning with fresh snow, on the days penned in to work, is often a big ask and we know from experience that the best solution is time and patience.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e When we talk about cold, we are not talking about 32°F or 0°C, that is a fairly lame degree of coldness for the mountain folk of Montana. We are talking about it being frigid – like -10°F or -23°C - that is when the magic can happen.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This morning, north of Livingston, Montana, the textural clues in the bison’s beard hint at extreme conditions. The contrast between the two places is astonishingly stark, given that they are only three miles apart. Whilst Vail was styled by architects and designers on Alpine Bavaria, Minturn was styled by grizzly prospectors looking only as far as the next day.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Vail was built 80 years after Minturn and when the contractors finished a day’s shift, they would head west to the Minturn Saloon. It was the place to go and 60 years on, despite some remodelling and ownership changes, it remains exactly that. All those who know Vail, know the Minturn Saloon. Rather like the Woody Creek Tavern in Aspen, it has fostered a strong patronage over the years and when the doors open at 3 pm, the bar fills at a speed to suggest that this is a special and loved destination. As always it is the people that make the places and this bar attracts a rich variety of clientele.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Part of the saloon’s appeal was that it was directly accessible by skis, by car, by foot and by horse and it therefore became something of a vortex at the end of the day. By the 1970s, the Minturn not only attracted cowboys, builders and miners, but the new bohemian hipster crowd from over the hill.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I am always drawn to the visual contrasts afforded to a filmmaker when a wild frontier destination is fused with glamour. This was the premise for this story. I saw a chance to play with the cold winter light that day and the result works pleasingly well in colour.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Alessandra Ambrosio is one of the leading models in the world and it was a pleasure to work with her. She certainly killed her look and showed why she is at the top of her game. The snow cover here tends to be less substantial than up towards Big Sky and we needed that snow cover. Whilst there is no more important variable in our planning than rigorous attention to trusted weather forecasts, we sometimes have to acknowledge that luck plays a big role. This was a lucky day.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I think that any portrait of a bull bison, in which this enormous and emblematic animal is perpendicular to the camera, must be more kinetic than a head on portrait, simply because there is no sense of engagement. The bison is behaving as normal and not reacting to my presence because I was hidden behind a rock. He may have smelt me but he did not see me.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It’s the small things that can sometimes elevate a picture. In this case, it’s his eye detail and then immediately below his face, the blades of grass caked in frozen snow. There is an emphatic sense of the cold, which is what I always strive for in my bison work. A similar portrait shot in summer would lose zest and a powerful narrative. It was taken on a cold January morning on the train tracks north of Rockwell on the Durango to Silverton train line in Colorado.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The cold makes the photograph. It was around 20 degrees below zero, allowing the bison´s breath to become an important prop in the image. In most cases, any feature that defies gravity is a bonus for a picture as it allows a story to gain breadth and depth.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Over the years, we have built strong friendships with the employees of this historic railroad and, of course, its owners. Opened in 1924, the horseshoe-shaped stadium sits at over one mile above sea level, making it one of the highest sports stadiums in America, higher even than the Broncos’ famous home down the road in Denver.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    Until recently, the Buffaloes struggled to fill the stadium on game day, but the arrival of Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders in 2023 flipped the narrative overnight and attendance rose 25% to its 53,000 capacity. From sitting somewhat on the periphery, the Colorado Buffaloes are now very much a story in Us college football.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    In October 2024, I visited Folsom Field for an evening game to film the arrival of the famous team mascot - Ralphie the Buffalo - into a packed stadium heaving with anticipation and excitement.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    I had studied video of previous entrances and made a judgement on the best position on a risk-reward basis. My preconception was that I needed to convey the sense of a stadium full to capacity as well as, of course, capturing the spectacle of Ralphie in full flow.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e    I want to thank Cu for its support and partnership in this project, which will raise money for the Athletic department and those that look after Ralphie. Of course, these days, it is all for show and friendships are soon made, but there is an overriding sense that bad things did once happen here. It would be very disappointing to enter a frontier bar to learn that nothing immoral had ever occurred under its roof.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The lore of the American West would suggest that in the olden days, bars were loosely governed and behaviour was unpredictable. Life was cheap, and entering a bar at the wrong time could be a fatal mistake. It was Russian Roulette and the default position was to be armed and wary.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This tableaux is a giddy ode to these saloon bars dotted around frontier towns in the Wild West. It was taken in Kochevar’s Saloon, in the old mining town of Crested Butte, Colorado. The walls of Kochevar’s - which include a century old roulette table - are a rich museum to the American west. If those walls could talk, they would no doubt tell many a story of character rich women, gambling feuds, drunken outlaws and cowboy capitalists. Nothing would get in their way: forests would be cut; mountains carved and railroads built. 60 million bison were culled and IGNOREd by cattle. Native Americans faced an existential crisis.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Some tribes, of course, fought, whilst others negotiated. There was heavy loss of life on both sides and there is irony now that this period of nation building is deeply uncomfortable for many current day Americans. What created the wealthiest country in the world is not something to celebrate.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Railroads were an integral part of the Manifest Destiny and undermined the sovereignty of Native nations. Their construction threatened to destroy indigenous communities and their cultures as the railroad expanded into territories inhabited by Native Americans.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e But for all that, encounters between steam trains and Native Americans were not necessarily as Hollywood has depicted. There was not much conflict and indigenous people mostly watched the railroad construction with a degree of fascination. Indeed, some found themselves drawn into a closer relationship with settlers because of the commercial opportunities that came with railroad construction. There was collaboration and often Native Americans offered protection from bandits.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e 19th century artists often depicted Native Americans as passive contextual narrative in railroad images; they are present but only to frame the story, not make the story. They simply establish the scene. This was my intent one cold February morning at Horseshoe Bend on the famous Durango \u0026amp; Silverton Railroad high in the San Juan Mountains. The Native American is not on the bend to attack, he is there simply to proudly show his presence. It is for the viewer to imagine how the next five minutes unfolded.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e A great deal of logistical teamwork enabled this opportunity that cold sunny morning and the result is a strong photograph. A group of male bison charging through heavy snow, directly towards a camera is certainly a rare sight and it always seemed a bridge too far from almost every perspective. The question has always been where and how could this epic scene unfold in front of a camera?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eYellowstone National Park was never going to be the answer.  This sort of collective behaviour does not tend to happen in the park and if it did, there would be zero chance of being in the right place at the right time to film it. It is difficult to break new ground in Yellowstone.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 2020 an American artist, John Banovich, an exceptional talent and good friend, suggested that I approach Ted Turner to see if I could gain access to his stunning 180 square mile ranch - Flying D - saddling Yellowstone and neighbouring Big Sky. This remarkable place is nine times the size of Manhattan and showcases Montana at its most stunning best.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eJohn’s wonderful painting of a group of running bison adorns the wall of the main reception of the exclusive Yellowstone Club and he took his inspiration from spending time at Ted Turner’s ranch.  I recognised that this was a link worth pursuing. Flatteringly, a few months after my initial approach, the Turner team agreed to collaborate in the hope that we could raise money for Ted’s conservation initiatives.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTed Turner is one of America’s biggest landowners and also one of its most acclaimed conservationists and he reintroduced both bison and wolves into Flying D, one of his three Montana ranches. In mid-winter, his team of ranchers will herd some of the 5,000-resident bison into areas where feeding is easier and this controlled activity creates an opportunity to work a situation.  Just like cowboys herding their cattle in Texas, the skill sets of the Turner ranchers in deep snow are a privilege to watch.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe difficulty is that bison in this vast ranch are more skittish of humans on foot than their Yellowstone cousins, who see thousands of tourists every day.   I therefore needed either to be camouflaged or out of sight as they made haste in my direction. Luckily the Flying D team knew of a group of rocks behind which I would be obscured from the bison’s line of sight.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAfter many a failure, and some adjustments to the approach, one gorgeous winter morning in February, we achieved what we set out to do. Warhol is often credited with the line “art is whatever you can get away with” and whether he actually said that is secondary to the power of the message. Authenticity is everything and it should be a personal crusade.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI do think, however, that visual harmony within an image is something to strive for if it is available. If there is some stability in the weightings, or even better, a symmetry, the photograph - whatever the subject - can be more pleasing on the viewer’s eye. Chaos works for photojournalists capturing decisive moments, but what I try to do is make pictures as opposed to take them. It is a less relevant and a less noble genre of photography than working on the Foreign News desk and the goals are entirely different.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThese thoughts were very much on my mind in Yellowstone National Park when working with this lone bison. The only shot that could work had to have symmetry as well as detail. If the bison was a meter either side of this position then there would be no image.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOf course, the truth was that most of the photographs that morning were lopsided and aesthetically awkward. The bison would not be at right angles to my camera and not starring down my lens or the head would clash with the trees and create a nasty tension point. That is why I am drawn to Yellowstone in the winter as it is their stoicism in extreme weather that defines them.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe photograph is certainly up there for me, so many variables came together at 25 degrees below zero in the Flood Geyser section of the Park. Finding a large frost caked bull bison early in the morning is always a good start, but then to find him close to geysers is a bonus.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThese geysers normally omit a steady flow of gentle steam - a bit like an outdoor hot tub in a luxury ski resort - and when I gingerly approached the bull, that was my contextual background. Nothing too dramatic, but the steam evoked a sense of occasional geological activity and gave an emphatic nod to the location. There is a restlessness to the mood.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut then after three minutes lying on the frozen ground, the geyser in front of me erupted, spewing water and steam 100 meters into the air. To give this context, the spectacle doesn't happen every day and, on this occasion, the early sun was offering a generous level of backlight and the bison and I had front row seats. It was my very own Field of Dreams, albeit a little troubling as I had no prior knowledge of the radius of the thermal water. I relied on the bison as he had better info and seemed quite calm.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI care so much about the background layer in my work; it is pivotal to the art of storytelling. Sometimes it is entirely in our control, but on this occasion, it was a pure stroke of luck. Arguably I have never worked with a more spectacular backdrop in my career.  It was akin to a Game of Thrones mood board.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe are left with a timeless freak of a photograph that pays homage to the raw wonders of this planet. It is primeval to its core and a celebration of one of the most untamed parts of the world. That is why I am drawn to Yellowstone in the winter as it is their stoicism in extreme weather that defines them.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe photograph is certainly up there for me, so many variables came together at 25 degrees below zero in the Flood Geyser section of the Park. Finding a large frost caked bull bison early in the morning is always a good start, but then to find him close to geysers is a bonus.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThese geysers normally omit a steady flow of gentle steam - a bit like an outdoor hot tub in a luxury ski resort - and when I gingerly approached the bull, that was my contextual background. Nothing too dramatic, but the steam evoked a sense of occasional geological activity and gave an emphatic nod to the location. There is a restlessness to the mood.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut then after three minutes lying on the frozen ground, the geyser in front of me erupted, spewing water and steam 100 meters into the air. To give this context, the spectacle doesn't happen every day and, on this occasion, the early sun was offering a generous level of backlight and the bison and I had front row seats. It was my very own Field of Dreams, albeit a little troubling as I had no prior knowledge of the radius of the thermal water. I relied on the bison as he had better info and seemed quite calm.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI care so much about the background layer in my work; it is pivotal to the art of storytelling. Sometimes it is entirely in our control, but on this occasion, it was a pure stroke of luck. Arguably I have never worked with a more spectacular backdrop in my career.  It was akin to a Game of Thrones mood board.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe are left with a timeless freak of a photograph that pays homage to the raw wonders of this planet. It is primeval to its core and a celebration of one of the most untamed parts of the world. There is a sense of trespassing into an untamed land of ice and fire.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe effect is most pronounced in the geyser fields of Yellowstone National Park where the steam will freeze on whatever is nearby.  As informed locals will testify, these days are fewer than they used to be, but on this morning, it was about 25 degrees below zero, which is enough for the magic to unfold.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOf course, finding a bison to work with in these conditions is not a given and we have often failed simply because the lead talent has been nowhere accessible. Geysers are dangerous and quite rightly there are many no-go areas in Yellowstone. To dissolve would be a harrowing death and it has, of course, happened to both bison and cavalier visitors to the National Park.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis portrait is sharp and looks at its best when it is at least life size. The abstract granularity of the bison’s iced fur elevates the photograph.
