It is such an iconic stretch of road that has played host to Hollywood stars and their cars for generations. The stretch heading west from Chateau Marmont to the Sunset Plaza is a rich feast for filmmakers, framed on either side with enormous billboards. Sunset Boulevard takes people on their own American dream - it is difficult not to feel energised when driving on it. But it is far from easy to photograph here - it is a busy\nhighway and the only time it can be closed down for filming tends to be early on a Sunday morning.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nFurthermore, to be able to use wolves in the car – integral to the theme of the series – West Hollywood was out of bounds as they do not allow the use of exotic animals in outdoor filming. Hollywood, however, does and the boundary line is right by Chateau Marmont. To an extent, this made our choice of location relatively\nstraightforward. Including the Chateau billboards or the Chateau itself would locate the image emphatically. The Castle On Sunset, as it is now affectionately known, is notorious - conjuring up imagery of sex, drugs and general bad behaviour. This is not a place that lends itself to reserved or quiet weekends. I saw a narrative that played to this reputation - and this demanded a frame that was both suggestive and sexy.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nAlessandra Ambrosio is synonymous with the Victoria’s Secret brand. The Brazilian model has been pivotal to their shows and campaigns for years and I was delighted that she agreed to work with me. As always, I want to thank my dear friend Ed Razek - who helped make this possible. Alessandra is a stunning woman\nand very suited to the 1970’s look we styled her in. The wolves were not easy to work with and we only had a limited opportunity between sunrise and 10 am when our permit expired. It was a morning of thinking fast.\nand reacting to circumstances as we found them. The end result is hopefully playful and sexy. After a great deal of walking up and down, we chose a spot 200 yards east of the entrance to Chateau Marmont, because the billboards looking west were large and well positioned and the hotel and the hotel sign are so iconic. The bend in the road also helped give the frame a compositional balance that I could not find on other sections - such as Sunset Plaza. In my head it was always going to be a wide angle shot.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e  \n\nTo shut the road down meant shooting first thing on a Sunday morning - which worked as we kNew the best light would be sunrise if we were shooting towards the Pacific. Equally, I did not want the sun to rise too much as it would be tough on both the wolf and the model’s eyes. Of course, the model was not your run of the mill model - it was Alessandra Ambrosio - one of the world’s most photographed women. She has a very special look and is so easy to work with.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \n\nThe photograph is as I wanted - very La, very West Hollywood and jammed with reference points. It’s a little crazy, a little La La Land, but that was the goal. Most of all, to the best of my knowledge, it’s authentic. Of course she is integral to the photograph and played her role of the saloon girl with her usual excellence. She is intelligent, fun and easy to direct.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This bar, high in the hills of Montana, is well known to me and the light; depth of field and angles are all familiar territory. I am in my comfort zone, but the wolf is not easy to get right.  So many things are totally beyond my control. The wolf’s eyes are vital - they simply have to be sharp and that tests me and my camera to the full. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This image works and of course it is not dissimilar to The Wolf of Main Street which precipitated this series all those years ago. There are moments to show deep deference to those with whom you have the fortune to work and those are often my favourite moments.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThat morning, high up at 11,000 feet at Aspen’s legendary Cloud Nine, we had to deal with an 8am blizzard. But from 5 am wake up call, I saw the falling snow as an opportunity not a threat. Meanwhile, Alessandra had been brilliantly styled in 1970s ski clothing and looked sensational although I knew she would be feeling the cold. This was not her natural habitat, but she is a very smart girl and able to play to a prescribed role even though Cloud Nine in the winter is a long way from her home beaches in Brazil.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe simple portrait is of a beautiful girl. She happens to be at a famous place high in the Rockies in a snowstorm. Her clothing is a nod to Aspen’s coming of age in the 1970s. I don’t think we need anything more to grab and hold attention; there is a clear vibe. The ski run down the hill is often complicated by the amount of alcohol consumed before revellers are reunited with their skis.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Aspen is Shangri-La to both seasoned visitors and residents and Cloud 9, with its dramatic location and reputation for glamour and excess, is a part of the jigsaw making Aspen the most famous Ski resort in the world.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e My plan was to film up at Cloud 9 and style it in 1970s clothing as a nod to a period when Aspen really established its reputation as a bohemian paradise for the chic and the celebrated.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I booked two great girls - Brooks Nader - a high energy, livewire who has worked with me over the last couple of years and then the wonderful Brazilian - Alessandra Ambrosio - the queen of fashion shows and modelling for the last 15 years. She is a joy to work with and has a fun and unassuming disposition despite her fame. There are few models working today that are as loved and respected as Alessandra.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The only problem was that we needed to shoot early in the day before the slopes opened and the day was fixed. We woke up to a blizzard and freezing temperatures.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I think adaptation and flexibility are core to what we do.  Perhaps my middle name should be changed to “Plan B”.  I saw the snow as an opportunity not a threat and worked the conditions into the narrative. It was the right call.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e All those familiar with Cloud 9 will, I think, smile when they see this photograph. Its mere name evokes imagery of “desert modern” architecture, Slim Aarons pool parties, retro styling and endless vapid leisure. Hollywood found a sister location in this resort and was drawn to its shared values of celebrity, health, new wealth, and sex.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Palm Springs is the antithesis of the industrial “rust belt” of America and became a haven for those wanting to escape from their past or to enjoy a better life because of their past. It is no surprise perhaps that much of the Chicago mob money from the 1970s found its way down to Palm Springs.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e My idea was to take a single frame encapsulating this hot and colourful utopia. But there was no room to be earnest, I simply wanted to be long of parody and symbolism. Too much wealth, leisure time and shopping can bring vacuous traits.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Like film makers before me, I homed in on 1950s styling as I sensed that this was the era that defined the post war growth of the resort. I had the Ferrari and the police cars and from the first day of scouting in Palm Springs, we knew our street location and we knew our timing of roughly one hour after sunrise.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Our lead was the celebrated Alessandra Ambrosio - the super smart Brazilian model who can play any role ascribed to her. She “killed it” that morning and makes the image. Who knows who is being arrested in the background, but it doesn’t look like it’s particularly interfering with her morning.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This photograph is deliberately saturated in colour to evoke the gauzy, saccharine pleasures of the town. The contrast between the two places is astonishingly stark, given that they are only three miles apart. Whilst Vail was styled by architects and designers on Alpine Bavaria, Minturn was styled by grizzly prospectors looking only as far as the next day.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Vail was built 80 years after Minturn and when the contractors finished a day’s shift, they would head west to the Minturn Saloon. It was the place to go and 60 years on, despite some remodelling and ownership changes, it remains exactly that. All those who know Vail, know the Minturn Saloon. Rather like the Woody Creek Tavern in Aspen, it has fostered a strong patronage over the years and when the doors open at 3 pm, the bar fills at a speed to suggest that this is a special and loved destination. As always it is the people that make the places and this bar attracts a rich variety of clientele.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Part of the saloon’s appeal was that it was directly accessible by skis, by car, by foot and by horse and it therefore became something of a vortex at the end of the day. By the 1970s, the Minturn not only attracted cowboys, builders and miners, but the new bohemian hipster crowd from over the hill.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I am always drawn to the visual contrasts afforded to a filmmaker when a wild frontier destination is fused with glamour. This was the premise for this story. I saw a chance to play with the cold winter light that day and the result works pleasingly well in colour.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Alessandra Ambrosio is one of the leading models in the world and it was a pleasure to work with her. She certainly killed her look and showed why she is at the top of her game. Even if it is only fleeting; the vibe should be territorial and uncompromising. All eyes are on the visitor and those eyes are menacing and judgemental. Of course, these days, it is all for show and friendships are soon made, but there is an overriding sense that bad things did once happen here. It would be very disappointing to enter a frontier bar to learn that nothing immoral had ever occurred under its roof.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The lore of the American West would suggest that in the olden days, bars were loosely governed and behaviour was unpredictable. Life was cheap, and entering a bar at the wrong time could be a fatal mistake. It was Russian Roulette and the default position was to be armed and wary.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This tableaux is a giddy ode to these saloon bars dotted around frontier towns in the Wild West. It was taken in Kochevar’s Saloon, in the old mining town of Crested Butte, Colorado. The walls of Kochevar’s - which include a century old roulette table - are a rich museum to the American west. If those walls could talk, they would no doubt tell many a story of character rich women, gambling feuds, drunken outlaws and cowboy capitalists. The first stones of Vail were laid in 1962 making it the new kid on the block versus other Colorado ski towns such as Aspen, Breckenridge, or Steamboat Springs, which existed as 19th century mining towns prior to the establishment of their ski resorts.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e To begin with, the hotel was a “white elephant”, losing $100,000 every year until the faux Bavarian town matured into something of substance. But to borrow from Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams, “If you build it, he will come” and sure enough they came. The Lodge at Vail became the epicentre of a town that enjoyed growing popularity because of its abundant skiing and ease of travel.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The facade of the hotel has not changed much for several decades and I thought I could use that as a backdrop, in much the same way we did at Badrutt’s Palace in St Moritz, Switzerland in 2023. That photograph - which lent on the glamour of the 1970s in the resort - was hugely popular. There was an element of James Bond to it coupled with intense femininity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The formula worked and so this became the prompt for my shot outside the Lodge. After all, Vail became a place to be seen fairly quickly and by the mid 70s it was in vogue. Bohemian glamour was as prevalent in Colorado as it was in the Swiss Alps, maybe even more so.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Who better, therefore, than Alessandra Ambrosio - the Brazilian supermodel - to play the lead in this narrative. Like any authentic wild west bar, there is a palpable sense of entering a building where bad things must have gone down. The walls are requested to talk by many an infatuated visitor, but they never do. In the Minturn’s case, that is portably just as well, as some of the older walls come from a brothel up the hill in Leadville. That fact alone begs so many questions.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e There was no room for fillers in my cast at the saloon that day. It is a kind canvas for a storyteller but we needed some very strong faces to do justice to the joint. The Brazilian supermodel - Alessandra Ambrosio - is so easy to work with and such fun and Ty Mitchell - who has become Martin Scorsese’s morally loose cowboy for good reason. The rest of the cast don’t look the most inviting and that was the general idea. I sense that there has never been a real window of opportunity to establish modernity and the reward is what we can now all see.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eUndeniably poor in parts, and chaotic almost everywhere, Napoli is raw and untamed, but that is what makes it artistically captivating. What the inner city lacks in serenity, it makes up for in adrenalin. Driving a car here is a combative Olympic sport, not just a means of getting from A to B.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn filtering down to what is truly core to the city, I sense that two constituents simply cannot be removed - food and football. That is not to say that the other associations are emphatically weaker, but these two are surely integral to the fabric of the Paris of the South.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI was fortunate to be working in town last Friday when Napoli Fc landed the Serie A title for the 4th time in the club’s history. That compares with a total population today of 10,000.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eShipbuilding faded here in the last century, but it does remain a place of boats - small islands without airports tend to be that way. In the making of Antony and Cleopatra, with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, Cleopatra’s barge was filmed against the timeless harbour in the island. It is very difficult to put an age on any building here, which presumably was why the producers were drawn to Procida and neighbouring Ischia.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe long thin multi coloured harbour is one of the most visually captivating sights in southern Italy. It certainly makes for a good backdrop and my leaning was to film at dusk so that we could add some energy from the house lights in town. This strategy always tests camera capability, and indeed the cameraman, and most of the photographs don’t stack up, but I consider it better than playing safe during normal daylight hours.
